Keep dreaming...it cannot be done...maybe in 2023 or 2024 since now Apple is staying with the same design for 3 years

Same design doesn’t necessarily mean the notch can’t change, if they perfect the tech by 2021, I reckon we could have it.
Or if next year they change it so there’s a slightly bigger forehead instead which I’d be happy with. I kind of wonder how it would’ve looked if they went that route in the first place

Apple prototyping a smaller notch is pretty much a given at this stage, right? I wonder if this is really anything more than conjecture on Geskin's part. He just seems to court twitter likes with renders and half truths after his initial success with the iPhone X leak

Totally agree with you there. Apple will have been working to reduce the size of FaceID components since before version 1 came out with the iPhone X. Even I could (and have) hazard a decent guess that next year should see a reduction, if not elimination of the notch.

I’d go as far as saying that next year will have a reduced, or eliminated, notch. With Landscape FaceID unlocking and further improvements to speed, angle and distance. If I’m wrong, who cares, it’s all speculation at this point.

If Apple did that I wouldn't buy another iPhone. Simple as that.

I doubt I’d care much to be honest, I very, very rarely use a cable with my iPhone as it is, haven’t done since the X was released.

But, to each their own I suppose. Personally I’d rather see them working towards a completely wireless solution, by which I mean, no charging pad at all. Now that’s the future.

I'm not strictly opposed to no charging port as I use wireless almost exclusively at this point, however there are still times where I need charging, fast, and for that reason I'll plug into a USB-PD charger. You also have to wonder about battery cases and various accessories like audio interfaces and microphones. Those need a Lightning port.

  • physical moving part buttons removed for 'haptic' or pressure based buttons

Having had an HTC U12 Plus, I'm skeptical. But if anyone can make that work, it'd be Apple.

On come on, ok...so we are dealing with the notch and it's not a massive bother for most, many of us are used to it (Other phones, brands have that) And yes, I know this "smaller notch" other stories right now are not set in stone, totally rumored.

But I really hate to compare Apple to Galaxy - Note 10 design especially. I see that thing in the store like Best Buy and I won't lie...that is a BEAUTIFUL device (yeah, even with the dinky pin hole).

If I didnt dislike Android so much - if my entire collection didn't consist of Apple products, I would have caved in by now and bought that. - I totally admit! Yes, I know about the fingerprint flaws, other flaws in it. Let Android users be the guinea pics for that design for now, Apple can learn - hopefully - from Samsung's mistakes. I might even accept a design like the Huawei P30 Pro.

So Apple..fine, copy off Samsung, I don't care at this point. I want total edge to edge at least. NO NOTCH...NONE!
If it has to have a tiny slim...the smallest bezel possible at the top for cameras...so be it.

Bottom of screen, id like to see full edge...not sure if that is possible(??)

At this point anything less in the new design would almost be unacceptable.

Yes, you would.

I would be very upset if they did it, it’s inefficient and not a real solution for now anyway.
I don’t even own a wireless charger other than the Apple Watch adaptor
Edit: Seems unlikely as someone else said they'd have to include a wireless charger which will cost more, and we only just got an 18w charger in the box

yeah let’s all get riled up about a rumor that something might happen someday.

Apple wants to eliminate wired charging? They can’t even make an AirPower charging pad, why would I trust them to design a wireless charging tech that is as fast and efficient as wired charging?

Just FYI. iPhones already have wireless charging.

Just FYI. iPhones already have wireless charging.
yes but no Qi charging in the box... they need to provide charging in the box, this is the law regarding phones in most of the countries
So....how cheap Apple it is...until 2023-2024 we will not see this

Certainly, one way of looking at is that Apple would be “copying” other makes which have a full screen, without a notch.

But really, I think if they could have done it without a notch in the first place, they would have. It’s clearly what they have been working towards. It’s just a simple technical hurdle, the technology for FaceID just couldn’t be made small enough at the time to fit into the small border the screens currently have.

Other manufacturers didn’t have that technical hurdle because they didn’t use anything like the technology Apple squeezed into the notch. Itself quite an achievement when you consider the size of the technology at the time they purchased PrimeSense in 2013. In less than 4 years they reduced the components from a comparatively huge product - look at the Xbox Kinect, into what we got with gen 1 FaceID.

The notch was a necessary evil, which at the time they needed to roll out the technology to replace TouchID. It was either that, or delay the redesign of the iPhone until the tech could be made smaller, which was never going to happen.

And taking away the only way to plug in microphones? They just made a pretty good machine to make videos with. Removing the port completely undermines it.

Charging and data transfer can all be made via wireless, if you have enough time and patience, but good luck shifting all iPhone image restores to the Apple Genius team. The likelihood of a Watch to require such thing is much smaller than the phone, but there’s much less watches than phones out there.

Sketchy rumor by a concept artist? LOL have concept images never come true.

How’s wireless charging going to work when using the phone. I, among many others still use my phone while charging. Impossible with witless.
Much less of a problem with fast charging.

Regardless, all this sketchy rumor is saying that they’re thinking of eventually removing it. Which means we’re years from it happening. In 2005 everyone wanted a CD drive in their laptop, yet nowadays no one cares about it.

If 85% of the vehicles on the road with CarPlay supported wireless, I would not be so against the idea. But the fact is the majority come with wired CarPlay.

It's too early to ditch wired charging completely... however, I will say that I haven't actually plugged in my iPhone 11 since I got it, and the only times I plugged in my previous one over the past year was when travelling, as wires are less bulky than wireless chargers.

If Apple did go to a wireless charging-only solution, the best way to go about it is to include a charging case in every box. The case would have the plug instead of the phone, with a wireless charging coil built into the right spot.

I’m so totally in! They could include in the box a similar charging cable as the Apple Watch. If they use that extra space for a bigger battery! I might change my iPhone 8

Apple is testing different Face ID prototypes that would allow a smaller notch to be used in its 2020 iPhones, according to leaker and concept artist Ben Geskin.

2020-iphone-6-7-inch-no-notch.jpeg

Geskin previously created a rough concept to visualize the alleged 2020 iPhone.

Last month, Geskin claimed Apple has prototyped at least one iPhone with a 6.7-inch display and no notch, housing the TrueDepth sensors for Face ID in the bezel above the display instead. Respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also previously reported that Apple intends to introduce a new form factor, which could potentially include a slimmer bezel.

Ben Geskin now claims various Face ID models are being considered, with prototypes using new optics. Some are said to be smaller in width, while some are narrower to fit the sensors in the top bezel.

Additionally, Geskin claims Apple is revising the antennas on its 2020 iPhones in order to support the forthcoming 5G. Specifically, the prototypes are said to include "wider antenna lines (>1mm) for 5G." These lines will be made of glass, ceramic or sapphire, says Geskin.

Lastly, Geskin reports that Apple eventually wants to do away with the Lightning port and switch to an entirely wireless charging solution, suggesting the company has no plans to adopt USB-C across its iPhones, as some have hoped.

Geskin has shared some accurate information in the past, including details about the iPhone X prior to that device's release, but his track record is not perfect. This rumor should be treated with skepticism until it is corroborated by other sources.

HAHAHA...entirely wireless solution. HAHAHAHA. No Lightning or USB C or anything else. LOLOLOL. NOPE. Not going to happen. Ever. 😀

I’m thinking the 2020 revision will feature 5G and USB-C. Maybe a smaller notch. I think the notchless design will come in the next major revision. I don’t see them eliminating the wired port altogether as wireless charging just isn’t fast or ubiquitous enough. You can’t expect people to carry around a wireless charging pad for charging on the go.
I hope not. USB C sucks hind tit.

No cable charging?? How will you use your iPhone AND charge it?!!! I doubt they will drop the cable. Too much money in cable licensing.

ArsTechnica have an article today about how Verizon 5G can't even fill a NBA stadium, nevermind not be affected by a glass window. 5G is miles off being usable.

Exactly.

Verizon could cover an entire stadium... but they'd have to put a 5G node every 50 feet indoors. That's not very practical. So clearly they're only targeting certain areas of the stadium right now.

You're right... Verizon's mmWave 5G can't penetrate glass... so it surely can't penetrate concrete.

And stadiums are made of concrete! Floors, ceilings, and walls are all concrete! They'd basically need to put a 5G node in every hallway, office, skybox, and bathroom to get complete coverage in a stadium. The range simply isn't there.

Even outdoors you still have to be within line-of-sight of a Verizon 5G node on a light pole... and there can't be any trees in the way. I'm not sure how this will be scalable beyond a dense city center.

Plus... these outdoor light pole nodes only work outdoors. So if you want 5G inside a building in that city... you'd need 5G nodes scattered all over the interior of every building.

That sounds utterly ridiculous.

Therefore 5G is the technology I'm least excited about right now. And Verizon wants us to spend an extra $10 a month for the privilege of having to stand directly under an antenna to use it. I say no thanks.

If you want a good laugh... go watch some 5G reviews. Verizon invited a bunch of tech reviewers to the first rollout cities... and they had to stand outside on a street corner to test 5G.

Let me repeat that... they literally had to stand outside on a street corner to test 5G. It doesn't work indoors.

Yes it's fast! You can download an entire movie in 10 seconds! Woohoo!

But only if you're standing outside under an antenna...

It should be stated that Verizon chose high-frequency mmWave bands for their 5G... and that's why it has these range and penetration problems.

Other carriers will be using lower-frequency bands which might penetrate walls better. But it probably won't have the miles-long range of current 4G towers. We'll have to wait and see.

I read an article that summed it up like this: "Five years from now your smartphone will be using 4G almost all the time, even when you’ve got a 5G phone in a 5G city."
