It’s clear the notch is set to reduce, which makes sense as the technological components continue to mature. I would expect some revisions here for 2020. But there again, the notch could retain it’s current physical form on phones for the next five years and I wouldn’t care. It’s about the security for me and the improvements Apple continues to stride for.

that would be a big no for me. Wireless charging is slow AF and pretty unhandy when it comes to charging a phone with a Powerbank in the backpack or anywhere really

How’s wireless charging going to work when using the phone. I, among many others still use my phone while charging. Impossible with witless.
I do it all the time. Sit phone on pad and talk on my beats pro. 250$ but it can be done. AirPods are even cheaper.

I wonder if you’ll be able to disable 5G via software. I’m not convinced I need those speeds, and some of the concerns raised around health issues from 5G are concerning (I’m not qualified to say/know whether they have merit).

What about typing?

The new miniaturized faceID sensor can fit the top bezel which also effectively remove the notch for next year model.

I still used wired headphones while charging and 95% of the people here said “good riddance” to a tiny hole that you can simply ignore.

The loss of ports will never be a good thing. I use AirPods and wirelessly charge at home, but I plug into my car and every once and a while I run into a scenario where I want to let someone plug headphones into my phone to show them something but neither of us carry a dongle for that random situation and sharing AirPods is obviously gross.

They'll NEVER get rid of wired charging EVER in one way or another. Maybe the plug 10 years from now won't be lightning, but there definitely will always be a way to charge the phone by plugging a wire into it

Apple is testing different Face ID prototypes that would allow a smaller notch to be used in its 2020 iPhones, according to leaker and concept artist Ben Geskin.

Geskin previously created a rough concept to visualize the alleged 2020 iPhone.

Last month, Geskin claimed Apple has prototyped at least one iPhone with a 6.7-inch display and no notch, housing the TrueDepth sensors for Face ID in the bezel above the display instead. Respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also previously reported that Apple intends to introduce a new form factor, which could potentially include a slimmer bezel.

Ben Geskin now claims various Face ID models are being considered, with prototypes using new optics. Some are said to be smaller in width, while some are narrower to fit the sensors in the top bezel.

Additionally, Geskin claims Apple is revising the antennas on its 2020 iPhones in order to support the forthcoming 5G. Specifically, the prototypes are said to include "wider antenna lines (>1mm) for 5G." These lines will be made of glass, ceramic or sapphire, says Geskin.

Lastly, Geskin reports that Apple eventually wants to do away with the Lightning port and switch to an entirely wireless charging solution, suggesting the company has no plans to adopt USB-C across its iPhones, as some have hoped.

Geskin has shared some accurate information in the past, including details about the iPhone X prior to that device's release, but his track record is not perfect. This rumor should be treated with skepticism until it is corroborated by other sources.

So no more CarPlay when the majority of cars use wired CarPlay?

Apple wants to eliminate wired charging? They can’t even make an AirPower charging pad, why would I trust them to design a wireless charging tech that is as fast and efficient as wired charging?
No reason to trust Apple at all. BuY what you want.

However, I’ll trust them to provide a solution that, in the users hands, works, has proper security and can’t be unlocked by anyone’s fingerprints.

Called it. Apple's end game is NO PORTS on anything.

The "end" goal for iPhone has always been to be a like "slab of glass"
As time goes on I think we will see things eliminated as it becomes acceptable (ie. if improvements in wireless charge efficiency/speed are made). I think we are close to;
  • charging port removed in favour of induction
  • SIM tray removed for dual eSIM
  • physical moving part buttons removed for 'haptic' or pressure based buttons
With the potential for;
  • Ear-piece speaker replaced for vibration
Microphone and the loudspeaker are the only difficult ones. Camera can be hidden behind glass.
I could see them removing the speakers and using the glass pane like Sharp did a few years back, and I could also see them removing the volume/power buttons for touch-sensitive areas.

Oh ok and how do you suppose devs restore devices if the latest beta isn’t working? And how does enterprise manage devices with Configurator in bulk?

I don’t believe this one at all.

Uh until every car out there has wireless carplay, Apple can’t go fully wireless with the iPhone.

Smaller notch or no notch? I love it. I will finally upgrade from my 7 Plus as soon as this hits the market.

I really wanted to buy the 11 Pro this year but no 5G was a deal breaker. I pay cash for my phones and don’t sell/upgrade every year nor want to have perpetual monthly payments.

Besides I stopped playing mobile games once nearly everything became freemium so having the latest SoC isn’t as important for me as it once was.

Microphone is already on the bottom and loudspeaker is about 3 times thinner vs. the current bezel, zo it can be embedded into a thinner beze

not to mention Apple CarPlay still requires the lightning connector. That’s not even Bluetooth capable yet 🙄

Yes, you would.
If their solution wasn't completely inconvenient, maybe I would. If it were the case that you'd not be able to continue to use your phone as a phone (in hand) while charging, I'd not be happy and would honestly not want it, but I guess we could be looking at Apple Watch style charging that would magnetically attach to the back of the phone and allow it to be used normally.

I prefer physical ports and cables for that reason. I guess as the battery improves, it won't matter so much, but I have to say if the battery runs out and I have to leave it on a pad for 2 hours to recharge it, that'd be a no from me.

Ok. Don’t.

Motorola may be releasing a new classic fold Razor using the new foldable OLED tech. I’d seriously consider getting one. Even though not iOS. The Razor design was fantastic and the number one phone prior to iPhone back in the day. (cause it was cool!)

I’m saying using my phone though. Not talking on it. Checking email, going online using apps can be a challenge when it’s sitting on a pad.
