Horrible? I'm describing here a solution where iPhone models' lifespan would be 21 mo (internals) rather than currently 36 mo (generation). And probably ensuring to maintain an ASP well over $600.
I only tried to have an approach Apple could have, just as I did few post later in a fantasized price grid.
Horrible? No. More 'Deal with it' :p You'd pay for the full features for a 4" model 9 months after the high-end.

Except with 2-year phone contract renewals, most people want/need their phone to last at LEAST 24 months... and that's if you can afford the $200-300 every 2 years to upgrade on top of the contract discount. 21 months doesn't even start to cut it, and honestly I'd consider smartphones much less of a rip-off if they were still usable with the latest OS 4 years in.

What are you talking about here? I'm talking about the time a given model's internals would be in an iPhone in store. This should have nothing to do with the fact some people have 2-years contract, or Apple's ability to create new OS and softwares compatible with hardware sold previous years. It wouldn't change the current situation, new hardware is and would be released every 12 months.
Apple stopped selling Ivy Bridge Mac when Haswell was out, and with Broadwell they won't sell Haswell Mac anymore (yeah, the analogy is not perfect, cMBP or nMP. You get the idea, OS X is compatible with hardware as old as 7 years).

Hate is a strong word, and if u hate the iPhone 6 just because of size well I am sorry to hear that. And believe me u are not going to stop other people from enjoying ther iPhone 6. So let me ask this u prefer the Z3 compact Over the iPhone 6 right? If so u lost me there because the Z3 is 4.6 vs iphone 6 4.7" display.
So about 1mm smaller than the 6. And you know the iPhone 6 is liter than the iPhone 5 and the Z3 compact right? So u hate the 6 by all means get what ever makes u happy. But don't be stress out over the size of the 6, there is 4S, 5/5S still out there. Also I have a late 2011 13" Mac book pro and IPad Air but I still bought my 64gb SG 6plus & 64gb gold 6 for my wife on launch day, I still use my Mac & iPad around the house. But my 6plus when I am out and about or traveling overseas. My I pad was mainly used on flights but since my 6 plus I haven't use my iPad much for that becaus my 6plus is more portable. No big deal though will give the iPad to my 11 year old daughter if I find my self not using it much anymore. In the end get the one u want and don't worry be happy.

Er... I'm stunned that someone gets so angry about my opinion! I never knew adults could be so into the fanboy war that they spew this unfriendly vitriol towards anyone who mentions Android.

A Z3c has virtually the same screen size as the 6 but it's shorter, although it is the same weight. It's an excellent spec but it feels like a brick. Hence I'm using it but still using my 5. But using an old model doesn't benefit mine as I want to see a top specs in iPhones that are more compact in size.

And next time learn how to behave like a normal well balanced human being and don't be one of those people who rant at others.

It's on the small side for a Tablet which this size of phone seems to be intended to replace.

Well of course it wouldnt be 100% the size of a tablet. But the idea was at least to make the experience as close as possible to using a tablet while still retaining a good size and use of a phone. When streaming videos, surfing the web, gaming, etc. the 6+ does this very well and that's a plus in my book. I am really loving my 6+.

Should this rumor turn out to be true, it would be a golden opportunity for J Ive to showcase his talent and create a fresh design for the three new iPhones.

Personally I'm very put off at Apple's complacency, obviously in the name of profit taking they got cheap and continue to recycle the same old look.

If Apple created a fresh new design which wouldn't have to be dramatically different, notice how luxury car makers keep their cars recognizable, yet fresh, Apple would really shock the industry.

In addition they'd enjoy an increase in volume of sales so massive they'd not only experience a huge jump in Market Share, but they'd rocket to the top of all companies with record revenue.

I hope this is true... Apple abandoned a lot of people who appreciated the smaller size of their devices. It would be nice if they continued to give them a solution - one that didn't rely on just saying "buy last year's phone" (or a year from now... buy a 2 year old phone).

So true. Know of a few people who had renewed their contracts recently and had bought the 5s because of the size. Price was decent as well.

May happen sometime down the road where they celebrity something about Apple as a company achievement. But it looks like Apple is going the way of other Android devices; where they package smaller screen size with inferior technology inside. I know a lot of people that would buy at the same price point a 4" model at the same price as the Plus model if Apple would only make it with the cutting edge technology inside like that of the Plus model.

So, the 4" and the 5.5" would be the flagship models and the 4.7" would be the mid tier model.

Before Windows Mobile and the iPhone, smaller, even tiny, mobile phones were very often more expensive than big ones. Tiny ones that hid in ones pocket instead of filling it.

There exist people who think an iPhone 6, and even an iPhone 5, are too big. Lots of people. They have money. Someone will (re)start making small quality smartphones for them. It will be a profitable business. I hope that it's Apple that does it, and not Samsung or some random Android knock-off who catches on first.

If Apple can figure out a UI for a watch, they certainly can figure out a UI for a smaller smartphone than the 6.

4" phone would be ideal if they could get rid of the bezels and make the hardware button on screen rather a physical one ... but that wont happen i dont think.

Why would I be angry about your opinion? You are mistaken if u think I am angry. Also not a fanboy here, just was wondering why u would use such a strong word like hate. And then go on to say u are not trying to spoil or defer anyone from buying the iPhone 6. I think just saying the phone is not for u would be more than enough, Don't u think? And notice what I said at the end, u should get what ever makes u happy. And again no worries here do what ever makes u happy and have a great day#

The 6 isn't much bigger.

I can't stand posters like you who won't give the phone a chance. Playing with it in store for 5 minutes doesn't count. Give yourself a week

I can't stand posters like you who can tell me how big my hands are. The 5, in all honesty, is annoyingly large from time to time for me.

And give it a week...you mean to tell me I should go in to the nearest store, drop several hundred dollars on a phone I already don't want just to test it out? Sounds like a brilliant plan, I'll get right on that.

Lmao you're so mad.

If u go in with a negative attitude like most of the haters then of course the phone won't fit your needs. But if you go in with an open mind, then it might work.

Humans have adapted to things for millions of years and you're telling me your little hands will have trouble with a device that's hardly bigger than the iPhone when every Asian girl out there has a 6+ or Samsung note. They seem to be doing just fine

Think the remarks you make outline your immaturity, so pointless trying to explain to you that iPhone sizes are about personal preference, rather than you trying to convince us that a 4.7" iPhone isn't too big and that we're all idiots for not buying one!

I don't understand why folk with larger iPhones are so against a 4" iPhone. Three sizes, one to suit all. Instead of two sizes that satisfy the folk who don't value one handed use among other things.

there's literally no reason to have a 4" device and a 4.7" device. the difference is very miniscule.

the point i'm trying to make is asian women are usually small and have tiny hands, yet they seem totally okay with handling a phone that's "way too big".

people just need to go and use the phone for at least a week before they complain. i used the 6+ for a day and said f this, i don't want it and got a 6.

a few weeks later i had doubts about my decision because i didn't give myself enough time to adjust to the new size, so i got the 6+ again and now i feel like it's too small.

The difference between the 4" iPhone and 4.7" iPhone is pretty much the same as the difference between the 4.7" and 5.5". The different is not minuscule.

I don't care if people with small hands want a big phone. Good for them! There's people who don't want that, so good for them too.

You'd be quite the dictator since you're very against choice!

I believe everyone should go with a device they are happy with. But I don't understand some of the complaint here about the 6/6+ some I can understand, some I don't. On my last visit to Japan which was last year. My goodness a lot those ladies there was just handing the Galaxy note3 and other mini iPad of a phone like it was nothing. At the time I had my 4s and iPad with me. And then I was like to my brother those phone are two big I counldnt use it. I saw a good amount of iPhone 5 as well, but mostly Samsung, LG, SONY etc. which all of them are bigger than the previous Iphones. look at me now I was one of them who use to bash the big phones. Now I am typing from my 64gb SG 6+ and loving it. Can u say hypocrite, I took back everything I said about big phones. U are right u got to be willing to try anything new with an open mind. Because u will never truly give it the chance it deserve by being negative. I ofen wonder did apple put a lot of taught and research before deciding to release the 6/6+? I think they where a little doubtful at first and they didn't really know for sure If it would be a success. Because no iPhones have never been on back order like the 6/6+ On launch day a mean there are people still waitng for there 6plus 64/128gb 3-4 weeks estimated wait. I remember on launch day my wife and I went to the Apple Store to try the 6/6+ out. My wife was like with the 6, I think I can get use to this. I on the other hand a big phone hater was like don't know but I will give the 6+ a go. Glad I did after a week of use I have adapted really well to it, and love everything about it. But I feel some people on here are not being honest when they say they can't use the 6 because some of the reason why doesn't make sense to me. Others however I can understand why they may not be able to use the 6/6+. Anyway I hope apple do something for these people who still desire the "4 srceen.

I don't see the logic in their strategy of always keeping older models around with the iPhone and iPad. Steve's strategy was always to keep it simple.

Currently there are 29 iPhone options and 54 iPad options. Do we really need that much choice? It's time to revert to a simpler line up and ditch the old models.

Wow u think the display on the 6+ is cramped?
As an iPad replacement, yes.
There is a lot of people putting there iPad mini up for sale because of the 6plus.
I wasn't one of them.
To me the the IPad would be more cumbersome than the 6+ don't find my 6+ to be cumbersome or cramped at all its fits in my pocket nicely but then again I dont whare tight fiting pants I am 6'1" 207 lbs with 8% body fat tight pants won't work for me, I love everything about my 6+.
I carry an iPhone in my pocket and don't need to shoehorn a larger device there. When I need a larger screen I grab the 10" iPad that's either in my bag or on my couch.
And to be honest in my opinion the previous iPhones are the ones that are cramped, but not cumbersome. They needed to expand the screen on the iPhone and I am glad they did.
You're not the only one who felt that need, which I don't share.
It's all good though 4S/5C/5S is still out there and can be pick up for a good price.
I've stayed with the 6 because the 128GB option. If there were a 5S with 128GB, I'd switch back in a heartbeat.

As long as everyone's happy! If releasing three models (4, 4.7 and 5.5) gives everyone a choice then why not?

Personally I'm happy with my 6 plus. It's about time.

When I'm on the go I much prefer to use my 6 plus. I've decided to leave my iPad air at home most days as it was in my bag and every time I just took out my 6 plus. At home it's about 50/50 between my 6 plus and iPad air. I have a mini which I've temporarily given to a family member. At the moment I'm not missing my mini at all. I'm debating whether to let her keep the mini or give her my galaxy tab pro. I think she would prefer the tab pro as she has a galaxy S5.

Doubt this. The 5S is pretty future proof, its almost as powerful as a 6 according to geekbench. 2500 vs 2900. Not a big leap.

Just like 512MB of ram finished the 4s with iOS 8, only 1GB of RAM will finish the 5s and 6 by iOS 10/11. Maybe the 6s with 2GB of ram if Apple gets generous coupled with the 14nm A9 will be more future-proof than any previous iPhone, but to be frank, I think the term "future-proof" is BS in tech.

iPhone 6 Minus

More likely iPhone 6 mini, 6s mini or 6c.

I don't have to adapt to anything. As an educated consumer of a luxury device, I have the right to pick and choose and select the device that best suits me. If you truly believe that you have to go out and settle for less just because it's what is available, then you have a lot of maturing to do.
