This would be great for a lot of people who prefer the smaller phones. I personally am enjoying my 6+.

I've had ever version of iphone since day 1 on release date of each version. Just my opinion of course but the 6 is my least favorite. No longer a one handed device apple was so proud to boast about and I drop it nonstop trying to do the easiest things with one hand like text. Doesn't wrap around you're hand comfortably and feels like you're carrying an obnoxious large phone. I just feel like every bozo with an andriod phone that I always felt looked silly. Yes I have a 5s and yes I still go back to it and if it wasn't for talk and surf working on the 6 (verizon) I would go back permantely to the 5s. A screen somewhere between the 5s and 6 would be ideal IMO.

More people bought iPhone 5S than iPhone 6+lol ..iPhone 5S got dumped by carriers at dirt cheap prices. That's why. Profit margins dictates all. 4" version margins are a lot less than current 6/6+ Unless Apple sell 4" iPhone 6 at 4.7" price which will never happen

How come they've sold a much higher percentage of 5s's as they have in the past with the middle model iPhone?

Great news/rumor!

This makes me happy! I am still using 4S, I think it is perfect size for a mobile phone and I love that design the most among all iPhone models.

Btw, I do like big screens, but I prefer my phone small! So Apple should definitely offer smaller iPhone with the latest internals. There are many of us who prefer smaller phones. Thanks, Apple, I hope it this is true.

battery battery battery.

i can not see myself sacrificing this unless they match the battery life with what is on offer with the 6+

I'm still using my 4S because I just don't want anything larger. I would run not walk to the Apple Store for 4 inch iPhone!

Maybe for the fall. However before then I don't see why they would need one. The 5S is still selling a lot. The 6 is doing well too. They don't need to go down the samsung route and start selling too many devices.

If true it would sell too! Many people want a smaller iPhone with better internals.

As an iPhone 6 owner, I may even consider going back down to 4" if other parts are equal. I'll reevaluate my needs and wants when I'm due for another upgrade. Regardless, it's nice to have choices.

Lets hope this happens, I had the 6 for a while and didn't feel comfortable with it, so went back to my 5. The extra screen space was great but it just didn't feel comfortable in the hand.

Although I think that they should wait for iPhone 7 as 5 and 5s are still working perfectly.

It's not just females that have smaller hands, in fact not all females have small hands (the article comment is pure sterotyping and discrimination really), however Asians generally do have smaller hands. Many of my Asian friends agree that a smaller phone would suit them better.

But like a few comments have stated, a small, medium and large variety makes sense considering we see the same with clothing etc etc.
One size doesn't fit all.

A smaller iPhone coupled with the Apple Watch makes good sense. You can easily keep the 4 incher tucked away and use the Apple Watch to do all the business.

I always assumed they would do this. They would be stupid not to. They really had the experience on a small screen nailed down and there are plenty of people who prefer a smaller phone.

As someone who would otherwise be stuck on the 5S indefinitely or forced to switch to Android (gah!), this news makes me very happy. Even the change in form factor from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 5 made it less usable for those of us with small hands, and the 6 wouldn't fit in the pockets of half my clothes (and no, a purse does not solve all use cases, nor is it something one wants to be forced to carry every time one leaves the house).

As many others have mentioned, this will nonetheless be very disappointing if it's positioned as the underpowered low-priced option in the lineup -- most people who are asking for a smaller phone are doing so based on form factor rather than price. And Apple's low-end options tend not to hold up so well with the latest OS and apps at the end of a 2-year contract/upgrade cycle.

Three things ....
#1: The menu isn't "absurd".
I've got hotdogs/a side/dessert/ice cold milk & a fresh, post-meal ciggy.
What's "absurd" about that?!?

#2: Junior's cheescake=vastly overrated, and overpriced, too.
I had French cheesecake by Entenmann's.

#3: Cigar afficionados tell me that Cuba doesn't rotate her tobacco crops.
Dominican Republic farmers do, thus rendering a far superior product.

Perhaps your consumables clichés need updating.

/sarcasm

In any case, there's nothing better than Juniors. Price is of no issue when devouring such rich and creamy goodness.

There are a lot of people out there who just want the latest and greatest iPhone, and bought the 6 or 6+ because it was new. Yes there were people who bought it for the screen size, but that wasn't everyone, there are other upgrades in them.

True there is a lot of people who just want the latest a greatest. But I for one don't do that, first for me was the 2G,3G,3GS,4S I pass on the 5/5S because I was waiting on apple to go bigger than 4" for me 4" is not that mush bigger than 4S 3.5" there was a lot of people who was going over to android because of there bigger screen and some features. And trust me some of 6/6+ features have been on android phones for at least a year now. The only deference is that those feature works better on the iPhone. So the only thing the iPhone was missing is the bigger screen, compare to the Galaxy S4- and note3. And when apple came out with the 6/6+ It was a hit for them. And it wasn't so much the features. but the bigger nicer display which is a sight for soar eyes. U look through this forums a lot of people like my self, got the 6/6+ mainly because of the bigger screens.

And for me at least to use the phone for more than just calls it needs to be small enough that it can go in your pocket, and be used with one hand, otherwise why not just throw a laptop or iPad in your bag?

I do a lot of traveling and out there in the wild u can see the demand for bigger phones. Every other smartphone manufactures out there has bigger phones except for Apple. A lot of people That I talk to in regards to the iPhone, most of them say they like the iPhone but the screen is not big enough. So there u have it, and then finally here comes the 6/6+ order my SG 64gb on launch day 9/19 and got it in 10/16. My wife 64gb gold 6 got here on 10/7. Some people are still waiting on there 6+ Every hard to get still in most part of the country especailly the 64/128 GB models. It's getting a little better now though. So this is prove enough that a lot of people want the bigger display. More than the latest and greatest. And to me my 6+ is more portable than my Mac and any iPad to carry around for that matter, it fits nicely in my pocket. Anyway to each is own and hope apple do a 4" for the people that still desire this size.

6'2" ish Male with a hand that can stradle an octave on a Piano.

And I want this.

If Apple isn't going to make it so the iPhone 6+ replaces both my iPhone and iPad, I'm going to buy two separate devices and get the smallest iPhone and largest iPad.

so you dont like the phone 6 bc it is too big for you? and you think a screen size somewhere between the 5s and 6 is better?

maybe instead of complaining and being picky you should get bigger hands. the iphone 6 is the right size for 90% of people and it is wrong to expect apple to make a phone for every hand size so too bad if you have midget hands.

It would be a good move.
It may be a new 5C with TouchID and NFC to enable Apple Pay and they could sell it at 5S's price
