Sketchy Rumor Claims Future iPad Mini to Feature 120Hz ProMotion Display, Which Could Resolve 'Jelly Scrolling' Issue

So Apple decided to sell this iPad knowing jelly scrolling was an issue? And now rumors are out there claiming 120hz rate will fix it?

It won't. In the end, panels need to refresh one edge to the other and you'll always be able to catch it in the act. I think it would be possible to wire a panel with an entirely parallel system so it could refresh from top to bottom and left to right. That might fix the distraction, but I imagine it would be almost twice as complex and very costly.

You not seeing it doesn't make it a non-issue. It is an issue for those who can see it (like myself, in normal day-to-day usage).
It (isn’t) an issue, it’s an (annoyance).
Keyboards that stop working after six months is an (issue.)
Batteries that explode is an (issue.)
Screens that disconnect from The computer, making them useless is (an issue.)
Screens refreshing A millisecond faster on the right side than the left, as all LCDs do, in a way that just gets under your skin is (not an issue), it’s (an annoyance).

No. Apple decided to sell this iPad knowing that scrolling was not an issue, but underestimating the impact of a few whiny YouTubers with high speed cameras and a thirst for clicks.

Now they are continuing the rollout of ProMotion across their product line in the spirit of continuous improvement and with no indication it’s meant to “fix” anything, but underestimating the impact of a few whiny rumor sites with a thirst for clicks.

The buzz around Promotion reminds me of the days when the Retina display first came out.
It took years for the transition, but eventually every apple device got it, I still remember when people were blown away when they put it in the first MBP in 2012.

I'm sure the mini will get 120 Hz at some point but probably not in the next year or two.

In principle, 2-4 years is expected. But COVIDs been doing some weird things. Like delaying chip production and putting improved selfie cameras on all iPad models.

If Apple couldn’t get the mini display they originally wanted + if Apple had to punt with a screen they didn’t want + they don’t have years worth of inventory of that undesirable screen = I can see them over correcting with a better screen then originally intended.

If going 120 doesn’t require a bunch of changes that require waiting for the next full revision, such a change could even go this far. But any change will be a welcome improvement. And rumors being rumors the report may see a better 60 and over promise 120.

The iPad mini in that photo looks unusually small. Either that or the person's hand is really big. Maybe the iPad mini will fill the void of the iPod Touch when Apple discontinues it.

The next mini is what, 2-3 years away? i think the timeline makes sense for the entire lineup except the "small" iphone and the 13" M1 macbook pro they'll still be selling for some reason to have LTPO

What's a bit baffling about this is the previous generation iPad mini doesn't do this according to The Verge and others. Maybe this was the best/only panel Apple could get for the size they wanted?

It's a very, very Apple thing to do though for users to find a problem, Apple to state there isn't a problem, and then "fix" the "not problem" in the next iteration.
This got a lot of attention once someone branded it with "Jelly Scrolling".

How come on every other iPad this is imperceptible?

Quite possible with the next Mini version release. Gives them about 3 years to make it happen.
Right!

And this jelly thing is complete nonsense. You don’t notice it unless your are flicking your the screen up down up down up down rapidly. And who the heck does that. If your scrolling like a normal person it’s not apparent at all.

Don't think this will happen as it would put this inline with the Pro models price
Na.
By late 2022 or early 2023, whenever this thing is introduced, 120 Hz displays most certainly won’t be that hard to come by.
The pro will still have things like Magic Keyboard support, bigger mini LED displays, the M series of processors that keep it above the Mini.

I don't know if my iPads or Macs have the jelly scrolling issue, but I'm not going to look for it.

I feel that it is one of those things that after I see it, I can't unsee it, kind of like the way my son somewhat ruined Stormtroopers for me by pointing out they have a "mouth" where the respirator meets the "nose-bridge vent".

A 120Hz screen on an iPad Mini would be nice, but it ain't happening unless the Air gets it too.

It is a "Pro" differentiator; Apple made this definitive with the iPhone 13.

Would like to see Apple move all displays to 120hz across all product lines ASAP - all new iPhones (very likely starting with iPhone14), all iPads, plus Apple TV fulltime refresh at 120Hz (for those that have TVs that support it).
The newest Apple TV has 120

claims Apple is testing a Samsung-supplied display for a future iPad mini in the same 8.3-inch factor that will support ProMotion technology.
Being Samsung i wonder if that means it would be an 120hz OLED screen
