Can someone explain to me the benefits of a variable aperture? It sounds like it would benefit pro type users who dial in settings and know what they’re doing
when shooting. But for the everyday point and shoot how’s this going to improve photos?
For P&S, none really. However, the ability to adjust DOF would be useful for those of us from a SLR background , I just wonder how much it will actually impact DOF given the sensor size.

I’m no expert but…

Besides better control of background blur for portrait photos, variable aperture helps a lot with video by allowing you to keep shutter speeds low in bright conditions.

You’re supposed to keep shutter speeds for video to about twice the frame rate to achieve a “cinematic” type look, but this is impossible to do on an iPhone in bright conditions with a fixed aperture unless you use external neutral density filters.

I’d like them to go back to a fully glass back. This is the worst design in the iPhone’s history.

Well it's the Best Technical design for a load of reasons... but is it slick? Nope. I've always thought they should taper like this old concept for an iPhone air from 9 years ago! no camera bump at all.

I'm reasonably convinced that it's going to be in support of increased dynamic range.

Obviously controlling the aperture doesn't increase dynamic range by itself. But the iPhone already brackets multiple exposures to combine them into an image with greater range, and controlling the aperture would theoretically let the shorter exposures capture even more highlight detail with greater sharpness.

The slightly translucent back/Magsafe area sounds intriguing - would it introduce light effects akin to the Nothing phones? To signal charging/charged status for example?

theres regular iphone or air for you then. pro is for those who need max performance, not max looks, whether gaming or high resolution video recording.
i dont particulary like it either, but understand the design constraints. its like asking for MBP with glass back and titanium frame.

I reserve the right to buy the 17 Pro Max AND the 18 Pro Max provided it looks like a good phone.

I wonder if removing the touch sensitivity from the camera controls would enable more case manufacturers to support this button instead of just leaving a cutout. That would be a really nice change. The case situation right now is kind of frustrating. It is the 2nd year into the design and even major 3rd party case makers aren't uniformly supporting the camera control button on all their cases.

The big question will be, is the C2 modem ready for prime time at the time that Apple decides to include it in their whole lineup. I think they are taking a wise approach in slowly introducing their custom modems to first the 16e and now the iPhone Air before moving completely to the C2 on all their product line. But it's also just such a critical part of a phone, it still feels a little risky to buy the first Pro phone with an Apple modem. The wireless issues with the custom N2 (?) chip in the current release aren't exactly confidence inspiring.

One thing is 100% sure. We will get better colors next year. By simple process of elimination they have to be better.

I remember 6 or so years ago getting nervous at each iPhone announcement as a professional photographer. Seemed like they were coming for my lunch. That's pretty much gone now. The last three iPhones have barely seen any change with the cameras. If "variable aperture" is the "big" camera upgrade next year then lol.

Honestly iPhones make great pictures but nothing outstanding compared to the competition. Some even claim the pictures (not videos) are lacking.

I say this now but I think I will just keep my iPhone 16 pro until it’s no longer supported or if something happens to it. Unless Apple comes out with something totally amazing (which I don’t think they will, unless the leadership changes). I mean looking at the last Apple event cook really needs to step down. Otherwise we may have him looking like this guy next year:

I had a look at the new iPhones today. That back plate of the white version of the Pro Max(I would prefer that color) does really look plastic. The other colors are fine, but white - sorry it looks cheap.

If you need max performance, then you're probably not charging wirelessly. so just take that glass portion out.
