I think for the first time ever i I'll be skipping 2 iPhone releases. Nothing compelling here so far, don't like foldables.... And like the idea of the all glass

As a photographer/videographer, I couldn't care less about variable aperture. I want more light, not less. Makes absolutely no sense. The sensors are still very small.

If you need max performance, then you're probably not charging wirelessly. so just take that glass portion out.
yep
not a big fan of wireless charging at all as they force stupid design choices for phones. and since newer standards all require magnetic positioning, you dont really need wireless, just charging pins (like the accesory port on iPads)

Well it's the Best Technical design for a load of reasons... but is it slick? Nope. I've always thought they should taper like this old concept for an iPhone air from 9 years ago! no camera bump at all.

The original Google Pixel was wedge-shaped like this! Funny enough it also has a half-glass-half-aluminum back (granted, that was glass-camera, metal butt). Welcome to 2016, Apple?

I "skipped" the next phone because I already have a phone. The one I have works just fine. The desire to be the first person to show everyone what I have simply just doesn't exist anymore. My peers aren't fashionistas or kids driven by status anymore. Your mind really changes once you have to prioritize need over want and you're not surrounded by peer pressure anymore. Not to mention... the sales pitch feels soulless by captain bean counter Tim Cook.

Just give us the largest camera sensor possible and I'm good.
The complete focal plane of the future LSST Camera is more than 2 feet wide and contains 189 individual sensors that will produce 3,200-megapixel images

You didn't say you wanted to carry it with you. ;):)

Why, yes. Yes I did skip the iPhone 17 Pro. When it announced, I bought a 256GB Iphone 16 Pro for $899 instead. Sure was a big step up from my 2020 iPhone SE!

Still waiting for that 1" sensor, Tim. Sadly, I've now waited so long for that to happen I went ahead and purchased a "proper" camera, so my motivation to spend an exorbitant amount of money to buy a 1" sensor-equipped phone has taken a pretty serious beating.

Im still honestly debating on if i want to upgrade or not. The Only real benifit i see to trading in my 16 pro max for a 17 pro max is the vapor chamber, and the slightly better cameras and battery life and brighter screen with the biggest benifit being the selfie camera and im fugly, so i dont take too many selfies, that and im off social media outside of fourms like this.

On the one hand i really like the new design and thermal management, but on the other hand is it really worth 500 dollars with a trade in. I keep going back and forth on what i wana do.

Adding variable aperture on such a tiny sensor is virtually pointless. There is a reason why Apple adds fake bokeh to the camera app as small sensors, even at very wide apertures still give quite a lot of depth of focus.

And as a person who shoots lots of video, being able to stop the lens down one or two stops wont help with controlling shutter speed as its just not enough reduction in light when shooting outside.

If Apple really did want to continue adding pro feature to their cameras, some form of electronic ND would be much more useful than variable aperture.

Can someone explain to me the benefits of a variable aperture? It sounds like it would benefit pro type users who dial in settings and know what they’re doing
when shooting. But for the everyday point and shoot how’s this going to improve photos?
It won't improve photos for everyday shooting, in fact it may be a more video centric feature. It will allow more control of light so that you can shoot at the correct shutter speed for cinematic footage. It will reduce the need for ND filters when shooting in bright light.

It can be mathematically proven that you can release an infinite number of iPhones, each having a smaller Dynamic Island than the previous one.

I’ll be getting the 17 Pro Max (deep blue) tomorrow. I’ll wait a few years until all 3 of the cameras have a variable aperture, then I’ll upgrade again. 👍🏻

Um... you are a photographer and you don't care about a VA... what are you shooting? Documents?

"Previously, iPhones, including iPhone 14 Pro through 16 Pro and iPhone 17 non-Pro models, used a fixed aperture (e.g., ƒ/1.78) that is always fully open. The variable aperture in the iPhone 17 Pro marks a notable advancement, enabling the camera to better adapt to different lighting conditions and to produce sharper images with controlled focus range for more professional-looking photos - This provides enhanced control over exposure and depth of field, improving low-light performance and allowing more creative control of background blur (bokeh) in photos"

The sensor CAN be very small so long as the Lens Ratios is correct. Sure we want more light but then it all get bigger.

I am suprised they have not made these type of Wireless lenses or partnered with others.

Give me ND filter, please.
Too much light for 180 degree shutter speed at 24 fps.
Yes, I have one, but it degrades footage quality and is fooling internal processing with incorrect white balance.
Final Cut Camera does not have the same stabilizing feature as built in one.

I finally reached the point of....I do not care. I could easily move to the Pixel 10 right now if I had too. Anything I have, data wise in the cloud and agnostic. Most of the apps I use on my iPhone are from Google or Microsoft anyhow.
Remember to report what happens when you put ND filter on pixel 10 😂😵‍💫
TLDR - its laser is flashing all the time at filter so whole thing is pretty much useless.
