I completely disagree. Thunderbolt is not commonly used outside the Mac ecosystem except for possible server machines, I think. But many PC's running Windows still mostly run faster USB versions.
I beg to differ.

Professional business machines - the likes the MacBook Pros compete with - like ThinkPads or HP Business laptops all have Thunderbolt, use Thunderbolt for at least docking and connecting fast peripherals. Professional displays connect using Thunderbolt, charge your PC and provide connectivity, daisy chaining etc.

Gaming PCs also use Thunderbolt. In fact, Thunderbolt is often used to connect external GPUs to computers (gaming or not). Maybe Thunderbolt is not present on cheap PCs, but they certainly are present in PCs. And if you deal with professional level machines, they are everywhere. Docks, displays, notebooks.

i don't really understand the 17 air rumor, particularly since it would have only 1 camera? that makes it a pretty niche device.
Apple finds that it’s better to throw in a model when they want to raise prices. Just like the mini, it serves its purpose as the reg iPhone went up $100. Same for “air.” Will take $999 slot and pro will start at $1099. They don’t care if it flops as long as it softens blow on making more on pro models.

I was thinking about how if the 16s had ProMotion I’d upgrade from my 15 Pro Max to a 16, lighter materials and I prefer an aluminum rail.

Made me think, maybe an iPhone Air would be dope.
I actually thought the exact same thing. I don’t mind the Pro Max size, but a size down might feel a little bit better. The regular size 16 has almost everything I would want, except the ProMotion. I don’t want to give that up. I really do like the aqua blue color they put out this year, though.

This looks intriguing to 17 iPhone. If it looks good then I might upgrade. This is a long time away so until then rumors rumors rumors that’s what this place is all about😂

The camera capture button will replace all the buttons on the iPhone starting with the “Air” and/or Pros. Pretty obvious from the button press animations in iOS 18. Not everyone cares about having the multi camera array, and I’m personally very interested in seeing what Apple has in mind for the Air. A more hand and pocket friendly device is welcome.

The iPhone needs a new design language. I don’t support the mentality that it’s mature enough to just stagnate.  doesn’t need to behave like Microsoft and RIM did by resting on their laurels. They need to flex their muscles, akin to how they used to before this era of margins obsessed complacency.

I imagine the Air will require balancing a lot of variables to achieve its form and that has me excited. That’s what Steve’s Apple showed tremendous prowess in doing before the “good enough,” let’s milk this for shareholders era supplanted and staggered innovation.

The AI on 15 Pro and up only is a classic example in of this. Margins on RAM superseded forward thinking, and now the key features of an OS are available to the least amount of active users. No vision or standard for making the best product, just making the best margins at any expense, including sacrificing end user experience. Just market your way out of it and let your apologists defend it. The cringe and marketing shenanigans of the the latest event were nauseating. 1m and 2m versions of a charger, thinnest  Watch (10%), “redesigned” thrown around, AirPods Max with H1 and on it goes.

“Great artists ship” - Steve Jobs

“Coming later this year” - the new  way.

Tim’s  is amazing at making money and will continue to do so, but they don’t make the best products they can anymore, and strike the balance well in doing so.

I'll upgrade my iPhone 15 Pro Max once they add these features:

1. 6K or 8K videos
2. 4K action mode with less crop
3. 100 or 200mp main sensor
4. Less cropping on video mode
5. Bigger sensors for W and T lenses

You mean all the buttons will be capacitive touch based? That would actually be pretty cool.

Not interested in the Max for all the “upgrades”. Will be staying with my 15 pro and see what the 18 has in store for the normal sized pro.

Woke up this morning to find my iPhone 14 Pro Max had been upgraded to iOS 18. It will also run next year’s iOS.

The Monday Apple festivity was interesting but I was not enticed to consider the iPhone 16 Pro Max when I laid out the comparison of the v14, v15 and v16 iPhone Max Pro iPhones. But the annual incremental upgrades pattern is very apparent.

We have read about 8GB of ram being necessary for AI and Macs supposedly will run it better with 16GB of ram. The v16 iPhone models will have the minimum memory for V1 of the AI implementation. Rumors suggest 12GB of ram next year and that makes more sense.

Apple upgraded one more camera to 48 Mega pixel this year and will possibly do the third camera next year. At that point, one could expect 2TB memory to be available for storage and push the price above $2,000 before Apple Care and taxes.

I am hoping that the M4 laptops will use the same chassis this year so I could acquire a 16” fully specked out MacBook Pro that could use my existing desk stand.

Time will tell….

Anyone else sick of paying $1000 for a "Pro" iPhone only to have the Pro Max get the best new features? I mean, I get battery life, but come on. Sounds like this new update they only want Max owners to upgrade. I tried the Max this last cycle, and I just much prefer the smaller size. Really looking forward to dumping this 15 Pro Max for the 16 Pro next week.

If this holds true for launch next year, I might just not use my iPhone Upgrade Program and keep the device. My daughter will be almost 13 in two years and ready for a smartphone. I'm sure she would be ecstatic to get an iPhone 16 Pro, even if it's two years old.
