HD video calling is fine but most places I call have speeds of less than 1mb so its worthless for now. So 2.8 it is

Has the atrociousness that is the UI revamp been fixed?
No, it still has two buttons to add a new contact.

nope. Image here looks the same as before. Dont want from update 2.8.
You know, Skype has thrown in a bonus feature for those switching between 2.8 and 5.x if you have Soundflower installed. Whenever you start version 2.8 after having run version 5.x (and vice versa), it switches the sound input from the internal microphone to Soundflower (meaning nobody will hear you). You then have to correct this in Skype's preferences. But the next time you launch the other version, it is back to Soundflower.

Does anyone actually use Skype for anything other than to call someone else who has Skype to tell them they are using Skype?
I use it for all my phone calls. A flat rate of €3.3/month to all landlines in Europe is really cheap.

Yes.

I use it all day every day for business as well as personal use and I don't have a webcam.

Skype is much more than video calling...

How is this better?

Can it really be worse?

Great. The UI defaults to a big, giant, ugly paid call button. So I guess their solution to their childish UI is to hide all the buttons people actually want to use and by default display only the one that will make them money. Not that I would actually use the new version any more than I every rarely used the old one anyway...

How is this better?

Because Microsoft actually has some talented UI designers?

Windows Phone, Zune, Xbox and other Microsoft applications of late have phenomenal UI's. A Metro Skype would already by 10 times better than what they currently have.

When the UI is fixed and I stop hearing about Skype security vulnerabilities every other week I might consider updating. 'Till then... nope.

Source on the weekly vulnerabilities? UI, sure, but weekly vulnerabilities? Stop dramatizing stuff.

Crystal clear HD quality ? Crystal clear high definition quality? Really? Sounds sooooo microsoft.

Sounds like "normal" to me. Have you ever browsed any Apple product page? No one gives them knack for the cheesy headlines, or bad puns.

And yes - even use it from my iPhone (on ATT in NYC nevertheless) to call my parents in Germany for a much lower rate than via the carrier. Not video though but phone - and it works nicely.

I'll never upgrade from Skype 2.8 until it's absolutely broken or they revert to a slim, IM-style home window. There was nothing wrong with the previous design.

And yes, there is more to Skype than video calling. I buy credit and call home to the states from Japan.

Can someone actually test this with logitech HD cameras on OS X and see if they actually do give HD video or not?

must be a european thing. I dont think anyone in the U.S. uses Skype for anything other than its novelty.

I know loads of US service personnel who use it in the middle east, in fact I know loads of all nationalities who use it to phone home when they are far way

oh wow the contact list got even worse. might just go back to 2.whatever or 5.2
