Design flaw? What the hell? If your case scratches the device it should protect, then it's just one shltty case.

Why the hell would the iPhone engineers bother "investigating"? This is just a blogger desperate for attention.

Perfect explanation here... Blogger desperate for attention.

Have you ever seen the damage a bra on a car does?
How about the damage a Bed liner does to the actual bed?

Do you all know what is ironic about the whole situation? First off all have you ever looked at one of your old pre-iPhones? Or say seen someone with an HTC phone or Motorola? I have and they have scratches all over them. The corners usually have chipped paint or scraps and bruises. Yet, no one is complaining about this? It's natural you know, it depends on the abuse you give it. For some reason iPhones, because they are pretty to look at, should be bullet proof and never show an ounce of wear. Then stories like this come out and its based on probably three people's experience. It's a bloggers way of drawing attention to themselves. It's like "sex sells" and the iPhone is sexy right? Also there hasn't been any negative stories to dwell on for a while so lets conjure one up. Its ridiculous. If you want something to protect the sides, then get the Apple Bumper or my favorite, the SGH Neo Hybrid pictured below. You also get screen protection and back protection with their ultra clear shields. Best of all, it looks like the iPhone itself, so you don't sacrifice that beauty.

You didn't know that sand scratches glass?

I take it you don't wear glasses?

Also, you've never seen a small spider crack on a windshield get bigger? You really didn't know that a small crack in just about everything will end up as a bigger one? Really?

No I don't wear glasses and didn't really knew sand scratched glass.

And with your last comments you are just being an ass. Of course I know a small crack will eventually reach a big one. So then we return to my original point: don't make a phone that can crack so easily.

I used a bumper for the first few weeks that I had an iPhone 4. I took it off one day and noticed the steel around the edges had scratches. I got rid of the bumper and have gone "commando" ever since.

The bumper case itself has caused more damage to my phone than dropping it on concrete twice and everyday use for the past 2 months.

Love my speck case just because of the concrete drop issue. For nearly 2 years now, it has protected my iPhone 3G and I've taken it off from time to time and can see light scratching all around, but:
1. I expected it with light dirt
2. It would be far worse off if I hadn't covered it.
This is really a non-issue.

The truth is if any of these other phones ever made it to the level that the iPhone4 has, they would be pounded even worse in the news over these kind of issues. In the meantime, Apple keeps selling out of them.

Did you or did you not write this "I for one didn't knew that from a single little scratch a bigger one can occur as easy as people here have stated" ?

Also, you knew it was glass, I knew it was glass. You'd think anyone that actually looked into what they were buying would take the necessary precautions. The glass doesn't just crack spontaneously.

"As easily" being what concerns me. Also, a small crack is very different from a smal scratch.

I'm not saying the buyer should be able to use the iPhone as they wish. They need to take precautions, but if this rumor is true, then I consider this a fault from apple and not the consumer. Apple shouldn't mak so fragile products.

If the problem is because this users were playing with their cases, sliding them on and off, then it is their fault. But not if they just put a case and when they take it off one month later they see their back glass cracked. That I consider a faulty product.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the iphone 4's glass supposed to be "incredibly strong" if so than why is just a little dust between the case and the glass causing it to shatter?.....this whole iphone 4 dibacle has turned into more of a specticle that anything else, I can only hope that apple will learn from there mistakes on this one and make the iphone 5 that much better....

This is the only tech site I visit that has any news about about the glass issue. I guess that says something.

I've had this on my iPhone 3g.

I bought a case hoping to protect the back to retain value however, through normal use small pieces of dirt where able to get into the case and after removing the back I was left with a scratched back.

Fortunately my back won't crack but I can definately understand how it would occur!

while they are doing that they should check out my bumper, the dirt gets in and scratches the corners of the bezel

why not? I got piece of sand stuck between my first 3G and the case, and it left a dent on the back of the 3G.

Wow, all I can say is that apple really blew it with the IP4.
Antenna issues,
proximity issues
rear glass shattering.

The hits keep on coming.

People who experience such issues with the glass being scratched are just DIRTY. Lint and other detritus don't scratch and can be removed easily with a little effort.

Shattering? Sit on it and it might shatter. Drop it because you've drunk too much and it might shatter.

Are you an adult? Could you proof-read what you write?

Its quite amusing reading the comments on this thread. Not one of you has actually had a cracked back. My wife has an iphone 4 with a black bumper. She treats it like a piece of s**t and it hasn't got a mark on it. It looks as good as the day it came out of the box.

Apple continues to be their own worst enemy.

Being a little OCD , I THOUGHT...this will never happen to me... WRONG!

Removed the case to check and was shocked to find splintered back glass. And I clean the phone by taking it out of its case every two weeks. .... Simply shocking!

The saving grace for me is at least its not my only phone.

Do you clean the inside of the case as well?

Phone shattered into a million tiny pieces of glittery magic.
To quote Apples highly worshiped leader, "It's Magical & Revolutionary"

Yeah right Steve... it's all in your head... HEH!

Notice how soon "rumors are surfacing about the next model?

Apple can't make this debacle go away fast enough...ha...ha... :)

Um, first, there are ALWAYS rumors about a next model in development.

Thats because there is no company in the world that isn't already planning their next move when releasing a finished product.

Yes, I very carefully clean all surfaces on the case and phone. It receives meticulous care and handling. Its never been dropped or even banged against anything.

I have ten... Yes ten PowerBooks / MacBook Pro's I've bought over the last seven years and they all look like new. And they were carried to work and school daily.

Thus my point being, I am a huge Apple enthusiast and long time customer. I take very good care of my pricey Apple products.

So are you saying the case itself caused the crack?

Duh... I know that.

I also know Apple History, extremely well.

Never before has Apple fostered, and carefully manipulated "leaks" about the next new model this soon.

Don't get me wrong, this is frustration, and disappointment. NOT anger or sour grapes. I've been an Apple advocate for a very long time. But I will not blindly defend them against their own bad decisions and manipulation of the facts.

Hello... Apple? It's time to get back on track. You're capable of much better than this... :)
