Don't mean to hijack this thread with my own ideas, but I saw your concepts and ideas started spinning in my head... Here goes.

Now, after playing with this concept, I was thinking... IntelliScreen has the weather, which I think is pretty cool. But there isn't really any space left, unless we totally redesign the layout. That could work better, but for now this is what I've come up with.

The Weather and Calendar bars are little mini widgets I guess you could call them. The bottom slot could be filled with any number of these little guys for anything and everything. Any type of information could have it's own mini widget.

Now the next step logically is to ask, could every bar just become a mini widget. Could the calls, sms, calendar, mail, weather occupy maybe 3 thicker mini widget styled bars, that could slide to reveal information, as opposed to just sliding to open the actual app. I guess those are the two different directions this app can take. Shortcut vs. actual information display right on unlock.

Let me know what you guys think..

Basically thats what I had in mind, although I'm going to simplify it even further. Love how it combines my first and second designs. I still wanted to keep a way for it to slide over and give more info as an option for the first design, with the new slide to unlock features.

I also toyed around with the idea of using the icons themselves as the slider arrow. Basically in that design it would simplify things even more by having you slide the icon across the screen to open it, though I haven't made that design yet.

Thats what I posted along with my second design. You beat me to it though! Dang, if I wasn't visiting at home right now with my girlfriend I would have had it first. :( But she is working tonight so I think I may just work on it now!

Good work guy.

But really, the $64,000 question is this: Can you even code an app to run on the lock screen or replace it? It might not even be possible for anyone except Apple. At least with the SDK. Now hacked apps...anything is possible...most likely.

Update #2

Alright...here is my latest design.

It minimizes all the slider icons. Basically, you would still be able to see your beautiful wallpaper and just have a row of icons on the bottom. As soon as you go to drag one of them, the interface begins to fade into view. Once the icon is placed in the box, it fades into full view, shows you more information about the icon, such as what the 3 on the phone calls icons is: two missed calls from Home and Kara, and a new voicemail from Kara. Then if you decide that you want to call someone back, you slide to open it to the phone app and you can quickly call them back.

Or, for instance, if you drag the Weather icon, it would show the current weather and forecast, etc. I thought about changing the weather icon to rainy and 54 degrees or something with auto-update that shows the real-time conditions, but I am tired and just left that as is and decided to put it into this description instead (use your imagination!). Basically it would be a quick-view icon for the latest weather, similar to how the other icons give a number.

So there you have it. I have so appreciated the ideas and contributions of everyone on here. Keep it up!

Mmm.. this is fun.

Here's another idea I had similar and based off duke's latest.

Basically, when you hold an icon, just like on the home screen it will start to jiggle. Then that bottom dock row will fade away and your selection will be shown in a window. You may unlock directly to that app or, after viewing the contents, tap the X to close and return to the locked dock screen. Another item may be viewed, or the phone can be relocked or unlocked to the home screen.

Then again this violates security, so all in all it's just another random suggestion. After just toying with these few ideas, I can imagine how long Apple slaves over their features to get them just right..

The wiggling is used to indicate that a button has been held down long enough to be able to repositioned on the screen.

Why have the unlock there if one long touch will activate the iPhone. You've also still got to think how you could implement the security lock prior to showing any message.

From a glowing circle round the homescreen button, to a redesigned screen lock page (it's push email after all, so it could collate the number of new messages, SMS, MMS etc).

To hold a button down, then to slide to view the actual message - why not just slide unlock, tap the e.g. SMS key and then read the darn thing ;)

Please, please move forward with this approach. Just block it for users that have lock codes if this format does not work with inputting a lock code. This is by far the most Appleish design IMO.

Mmm.. Less clutter. Tasty.

In this design, things would only show when they have new items. I'd imagine some sort of vertical scrolling could reveal more than 4 items?

In my opinion this was the best design. the new ones are getting overly complicated. Only show what's new, slide to unlock and activate the application, enter passcode if needed.

Any updates on this App? I would be happy with either approach, but really want this. I love being able to hit the home button on my iPhone and just popping up any new notices (phone sits on desk next to me at work). I just remembered this idea today since I am using an iPhone again until the 3G comes out and I have OCD on checking for email/messages. Integrate this with any new IM apps and were good to go.

EDIT: If I have to choose, I like macduke's version, but I like the idea of only showing iCal, SMS and email if there are updates. Weather can be an option if user chooses to show it.

This is without a doubt the best thing I have read on this forum since I started visiting.

If any of you can actually program this, make it stable, and put it on the App Store; you have at least one guaranteed purchaser. I would pay upwards of $20 for a Today Screen app for the iPhone. Hell, I would probably pay $30...

This is the idea for a great standby screen.
Keeping the weather, upcoming appointments and alert status.
User adjustable timeframe for upcoming appointments, 1 hour, all day, 15 minutes, past due in red etc.
Good work.
I'll pay for this app!

The only problem is that this app can't be created due to the limitations of the current SDK...

But it could be put on Installer ;) Plus, then it would be ready to go for the App Store if they were to make exceptions to the rule (or if
Apple bought the rights to it like they did with Coverflow.)

I really like this design. Its a cludder and it leaves room for the iPod controls. I think the weather should be up by the time. You can choose what city inside the general settings. I think u should have to press and hold the icons because that would be making things too complicated. This is something that suppose to simplify things. I think the phone icon should only show missed calls. The SMS icon should only show the names of contacts who texted. The calender icon should so the latest meeting or meetings that moved up or got pushed back. Whichever icon u choose the slide to unlock should open into app after the pincode screen if u have it on.

I use IntelliScreen and would love something like this. I hate that there is no way around the Apple limitation of the SDK / background apps. I think there should at least be some sort of extra testing / approval process to get it.

My biggest gripe is the extra steps it takes to see what the missed sms / call is. I wouldn't even mind if when you slide to unlock it goes to the most recent app needed based on the last notification. If you receive an sms and unlock, go straight to that sms. If you miss a call go right to the missed calls screen. If you receive a voicemail and unlock go right to the voicemail screen. You can always press the home button then select what you want to do like normal. I usually have to unlock, press the home button because the last app / screen used is showing, then click on sms or what ever to view.

The feature I like the most with IntelliScreen is the nag / notification every xx minutes on a new sms.

It would be neat to have the iPhone vibrate, or show the unlock screen with the status if it has been motionless for a time (like on my side table at night, or when charging) and you miss a call / sms, then it detects motion when you pick it up.

It does this now, but only if you catch it before it turns the screen off. For example if you receive a SMS message when the phone is locked the screen will come on and the notification will be displayed on the center of the screen, also the slider will change from "Slide to Unlock" to "Slide to View". It does this for calendar alerts and voicemail also, the later saying "Slide to Listen". Sliding when the message says this will unlock the phone and bring you to appropriate screen. The only issue with the current implementation is after the screen turns off again the slider changes back to "Slide to Unlock"

The phone really needs a HUD of some sort on the lock screen allowing you to show current information at a glance. Hopefully this is on Apples list of the things to do now that 2.0 is out the door.
