I can see it now... "iPhone OS? How'd that get on there? Here's full OS X, sorry about the mix-up folks...."

Then developers need to pace themselves. It's their problem. Don't like it, go do something else or develop for Android.
I already do.
And then kick yourself when the iPad storm finally hits. Whiny developers are just as bad whiny users.
The storm will be over before it ships over here, that's exactly my point.
Who the hell said anything about the release being cancelled? If it's moved up a little, it's moved up a little. Besides, wait for an official announcement before you get artificially angry.
That was more or less official, the release went from end of march to not even being mentioned anymore. Several news sites contacted Apple's HQ in my country and the official spokesperson couldn't be anymore specific than 'probably this year'.

My iPad simulator says 'No'.

I just saw the comments on The Times' website. There is a lot of hostility towards this thing. People find it under-specced and overpriced.

I think the camera missing is bad, but the price even with out a camera seems ok to me. Considering there is NOTHING to compare with this right now.

When someone can sell me something even close, then talk about price. I'm happy it does not cost more.

Sure, and who's paying for the time and effort invested by people trying to get an app ready for release date, only to hear the release has been basically cancelled ? What about non-US developers who can't get their hands on the actual hardware and have a huge disadvantage compared to their USian competitors who can test and refine their apps on an actual device ?

Like there won't be iPad on eBay a day or so after release (especially if there is a shortage). Or have someone know in US buy one and ship it to you (if there is no shortage). if really think you iPad app is dooooooooooomed to not make megabucks if don't have the hardware in the first week then there are options.

I'm typing this standing up, it's quite painful to sit right now because us non-US developers just got effed in the A by Apple.

Like the App stores aren't per region ? Or just want to jump in a flood the US market with apps.

The WSJ folks already have one (among other folks). Even the majority of the US developers were not the first to be given one for testing and development. It isn't even a US vs. nonUS thing.

how does this explain US only initial shipping?

What brand new product line in Apple's history has not launched US only?
The initial Apple I
The initial Mac
The initial iPhone
The initial AppleTV
.....

Not product variations ( variations on a product iBook, Macbook ,etc. ) but whole new line?

I know there are folks who view the iPad as minor variation on the Touch but Apple doesn't view it that way.

It is an explanation in that if Apple delayed the software "to get it right". That is the same reason to limit the scope of the product launch: "to get it right". More countries means more details that can be potentially screwed up.

( besides anyone willing to pay a bit more can get one. Not like FexEx/UPS/etc don't ship practically anywhere isn't a terrorist state. )

...except that there were significant lost sales while they were doing this, especially during the Christmas seasons in the West, and this impacted game sales. Ramping up the supply chain wouldn't have been an issue. Nintendo was constraining supplies for the buzz.

Now that the PS3 slim is out, Nintendo sales are weak compared to the previous year. No plans for a Wii 2 anytime soon either.

Actually, Wii sales are weak because you can't find the blasted thing anywhere. I've searched every retailer I could find online and in person and NO ONE had any Wii consoles or Fit Balance Boards for the better part of a week except for a few who were marking them up by $50-100 (which I refuse to take part in). Eventually, Amazon got a couple in.

This is just plain unforgiveable. It's not about ramping up a new product - it's been on the market for years and they STILL can't get manufacturing under control. A halfway decent VP Ops should be able to get supply in line with demand.

Now, I can understand that meeting the December rush would have been a challenge since sales were way ahead of forecasts, but it's March, for Pete's sake.

Ok, we have these things called the present, future, and past.

When you read about something, it's possible that it took place in the past.

So when you hear about a software problem, it's certainly possible that the problem was worked on a month ago even though you're just hearing about it now. Not everything that's been written about is happening right this very second.

Wow. Back to the Future!! Good Capt Kirk v Bad Capt Kirk. But you are probably right on here.

Ah, now software problems I can believe. I saw the hands-on videos that Engadget et al did on the launch day - to be honest, beneath the veil of awesomeness, it looked like a buggy mess.

Can't really blame them for spending a little more time making sure it's right before releasing it - you saw what bugs did to the reputation of Windows Vista. I'd rather have it when it's usable, and I'm sure Apple would rather only give it to us when it's not going to damage all the press reports :)

ROFL, the PS3 has nothing do with weak Wii sales. They have sold almost 70M units over the 5 years it's been out. Nearly everyone who wants a Wii has one. BTW, that's double the number of PS3s that have sold. If you happened to read your own article:

A sales dip is hardly shocking: considering they've sold nearly 70 million Wii's worldwide, they're quite literally running out of consumers. They're bound to slow down sooner or later.

Game consoles typically have an up and down curve. It's the natural progression. I'm not completely sure, but I think 70M units sold puts it in third place behind the PS2 (140M) and PS1(102M) for most consoles sold EVER. Since the Wii is still selling pretty well even with a slow down it has the potential to catch the PS1.

Are you serious? Ever heard of a company named Nintendo? The Wii supply has been artificially controlled for three years now. Companies can and do create artificial shortages to increase demand.

This makes very little sense. From an economics standpoint there is some psychological factor (lets call it the 'free advertising factor') that you may be able to raise demand some by making people think they are getting something other people can't get, but overall demand will either go down or remain the same in a shortage situation.

Supply side economics says that increasing supply is the way to increase demand. I would argue that typically increasing supply causes lower prices that in turn causes more demand at the lower price. I don't know what the price of the Wii is right now, but if they dropped it by half tomorrow demand would definitely go up.

Overall a shortage does little to change demand unless that shortage can be used to forced prices up and in that case it lowers demand.

Exactly...software delays...I am 100% sure that Apple has been working 24x7 since the iFad announcement to stuff more features/bells and whistles/stability/ease of use into the iFad.

Apple wants to release the iFad by April before more and more companies jump on the netbook/tablet/e-reader bandwagon and steal the thunder and/or develop relationships with media providers.

If Apple wasn't able to release the iFad till Sep or later, it would very likely have been too little, too late. I think the iFad was 80% baked when it was showcased...which is fine...many product announcements physically showcasing are 80% baked.

The totally revamped and new applications, - Calender, Photos, iBookstore,
Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Addressbook, etc. - designed and coded specifically for the ipad, show a highly thought out product, IMHO more than 80%.. This isn't your typical MS vaporware.

What may be last minute are the content agreements with third party providers, but this was necessary to keep Apple's penchant for secrecy intact. As the old saying goes - Three men can keep a secret.... As long as two of them are dead.

It occurs to me that most posters around are acting EXACTLY like industry analysts in trying to suss out Apple's business behavior.

Except industry analysts demonstrably have more information than folks around here.

They have also demonstrably know jack.

Think about it.

Iphone/Ipad Internet Sharing

I dont know if anyone has said this yet, but is it not possible to use our iphone's 3g capabilities for the ipad?

Why do i need to buy the ipad wifi+3g when i can just buy the wifi version and use my iphone for the internet.

My iphone is with me everywhere, as iphone speed get better it wont need to change my ipad.

I could utilise my iphones gps system, so if im in the car just plug my phone in the charger then use tomom on ipad and have the iphone send all gps info to the ipad.

Or better yet some soft of ipad cradle with gps chip, but there should be a way to use both systems, give the users the choice and free will.

I dont know but it just makes sense to me, i have an iphone internet plan in estonia, im not singing up to another plan and paying more money when i already have free internet on my iphone, i just wont buy the ipad.

Umm how many times has this source actually been right in recent times? Any else think there is way too much over-reliance I think on jumping onto his comments sometimes.

It's a great idea and they should enable it but apparently the iPhone wont tether the internet over to the iPad. There is zero technical reason for this, bluetooth should do fine, but it's not expected to officially work (until we all find a way to make it work :)

Since when is zero greater than zero? The vast majority of industry analysts act just like the people here - they don't know anything, but they make wild-assed assumptions and then try to stir up a tempest over their own silly hallucinations.

The only difference is that analysts get paid for spreading their lies.

Because AT&T won't allow it yet. It was promised last year, but they've failed to provide the capability.

Fcc

So apple said 60 days when the ipad was announced- or March 30th. Massive snowstorm shuts the federal goverment down for a week basically. Apple announces April 3rd release date. Perhaps they just got pushed back like everyone in line for FCC approval?

Yes, but if it's for use in Estonia it doesn't really matter what AT&T think.
