This thread quickly turned from questions regarding AppleCare+ and what it covers to a moral condemnation by the "holier-than-thous" of the MacRumors community. Comments like "despicable," "scumbag," and "terrible person" are nothing but hilarious in this context. Seriously people: the guy (or kid) is telling a white lie to get a replacement that in all likelihood Apple would give to him anyways. What's even more hilarious is that the majority, if not ALL, of those projecting their pristine sense of morality towards the OP have at some point in their life done the same thing- aka taking advantage of the system by stretching the truth. We all do it- that is guaranteed. The difference between me/ the OP and the rest of you is that I have no problem admitting I've done it and I don't feel the need to let everyone know how morally upright I am (pretend to be). Get over yourselves!

Please don't assume that we've all done what you and the OP have done/are doing. It's about taking responsibility for your actions, which people don't seem to be willing to do nowdays. Telling a little white lie is one thing; telling it to take advantage of a situation like this is closer to stealing. He's flat out said he's going to lie in order to try to get an expensive item for free. And it does hurt all of us in the long run. Companies build things like this into their pricing structure, because unfortunately they know that people will try to take advantage of it. So we end up paying higher prices.

The OP asked for thoughts on his plan, and that's what he's received from everyone. If he didn't want our opinions, he shouldn't have asked.

You're ridiculous. Did you really come here thinking that people would just say, "Sure, go ahead and lie to them." I wish I knew which store you were going to go to so I could call and warn them. It's people like you that make things a pain in the a** for people that actually need to exchange their phones. You were too cheap to invest in a $5 screen protector, so now you want to scam Apple. Nice.

On the other hand...go for it. Hopefully the Genius won't just take your word for it and will plug your phone, check the diagnostics and see that you're lying. Maybe they can even put a note in your records about it and give you a hard time the next time you go in for a replacement.
________

Oh wait, you're the same person that has "misaligned" numbers on your battery percentage. Then you had another thread asking if Applecare+ would cover a scratch, and you apparently didn't like the answers you got there so you started this thread. Seriously, are you just looking for any reason to take your phone back???

here here.

i have the worst luck with phones (excluding the 4s). i always seem to get a lemon. back when i had a blackberry i had gone through 3 of the same model for legitimate issues. first one was constantly rebooting, the next one had issues with the keyboard (some letters worked some didn't) and the third i don't remember. i think the third one worked.

point being every time i took it back they argued with me for like 30 minutes before replacing it because they have people like this trying to pull one over on them.

man up and deal with it. if the device came scratched i'd say yes you deserve a pristine device for how much it costs. but if you scratched it then its your problem and you should deal with it. sure go get a new device but do it under apple-care, pay the $50, and use up one of your two replacements.

Why would i have to buy a new phone if I have applecare+

Because Applcare+ DOES NOT COVER A SCRATCH!

Are you part of the "Entitlement Society" of what?

YOU scratched the phone and now you do not want to take responsibility for it!

----------

You're despicable if you're seriously going to play the system like that.

He is only one of many. The only difference is that he played it out in this forum for all to see. He is far from being alone in his actions!

Perhaps you haven't done it to get a new iPhone, but I'm sure there are other situations where you and everyone else did the same thing in order to gain something.

He's flat out said he's going to lie in order to try to get an expensive item for free. And it does hurt all of us in the long run. Companies build things like this into their pricing structure, because unfortunately they know that people will try to take advantage of it. So we end up paying higher prices.

He's not getting it for free- he already paid the $200 in cash and will pay the rest through carrier subsidies. You're right- companies do have this built into their pricing- but the markup on the iPhone is so high already that the cost of replacements makes little difference. If replacements really hurt Apple's profit margin so much so that they needed to increase the price, don't you think the price would have steadily risen with each generation, instead of consistently staying at $200? Apple knows they will be divvying out replacements which is why they have the refurb program- it probably costs them $10 per phone, and it is one of the main contributors to their high customer satisfaction ratings. The cost/benefit ratio is certainly worth it to them.

Sorry for being longwinded- I guess my point is that I don't understand why people feel the need to tell other's how to live and what they're doing wrong. You people are acting like the annoying friend who repeatedly tells you to find Jesus or else face eternal damnation- it's unnecessary and frankly a waste of time.

Dropped a Bright House cable TV remote and busted it. No outside damage visible. Took it to the Center and told the rep that I did in fact drop the device and now it does not work. I was honest, and the lady gave me another remote, no charge. She thanked me for being honest. ;)

If I had to pay for my careless action, so be it. It was my fault, not Bright House cable. I will however remember the OP name on this forum for wanting to be a thief.

First off, the OP asked for people's opinions. He opened himself up to the criticism, so don't whine that we shouldn't be telling him what we think. If you ask people, they're gonna tell you. It doesn't help that in the past day or so he's had three different threads about wanting to return his phone, all for things that are ridiculous and wouldn't be covered under warranty.

Second, the cost of the phone is immaterial. He's knowingly going against the terms that Apple has set forth, i.e. that they will replace a phone that has a manufacturing defect, or if you have Applecare+ they will replace a phone that you have damaged. Therefore, he IS trying to get something for free through lying about it. The fact that he paid for the phone he has now has nothing to do with it. Yes, he paid for it; then he damaged it, and expects to get it replaced for free if he lies about it.

You can make assumptions about me and anyone else you like. I'm not saying that I've never told a little white lie; I am saying that I've never told one with the intention of scamming something from someone. This has nothing to do with religion or morality, this has to do with honesty and responsibility. He's being dishonest because he doesn't want to take responsibility for his own actions.

The fact that people feel that they're entitled to do things like this, and the fact that other people condone it, makes me very, very sad.
