Don't worry you don't need to understand the ATT defenders, you understand reality. Based on these comments by AT&T defenders, they expect a company to sit back and say they did something when they didn't.
No, I expect a company like Sling to look out for its own monetary interest. Getting its 3G app approved and AT&T spreading the word about it is in their interest. Biting the hand that just fed them is stupid. Congrats on your "no we didn't" statement Sling, you are really going to be making investors happy that you guys set the record straight about not having worked with AT&T. Very principled. Don't let companies accuse you of working with them!

De La Vega--Idiot or Mouthpiece??

Is it just me or does something blow up everytime Ralph De La Vega opens his mouth to the press?

His comments mentioned here plus his comments about heavy data users being charged more come to mind.

I am trying to figure out if he is the idiot or if he is only the mouthpiece for idiots.

Sling media not going along with ATTs story speaks to how ATT and other US carriers have a significant hold on mobile innovation. If ATT is shown enough times to have their hand in holding back innovation, maybe something will finally be done to prevent them from the acts in the first place.

Progress happens ... apps will be built that require more bandwidth. Developers are responsible for optimizing the amount, and "pipe" owners should be responsible for allowing for more.

I'm still baffled over the fact that we pay a separate price for voice and data and TV. If they allowed VOIP/Sling they could spend more money on driving for higher and better quality bandwidth.

I don't have a problem with a company holding back innovation if they don't have the capacity to support it. People need to understand the monetary and time requirements for such a large company (footprint size of the network) to bring them up to new standards. It's not like AT&T built it from the ground up either, they have had to acquire smaller markets with different equipment and levels of service. There's no doubt that they have fallen behind here but in most areas they are dealing with second hand equipment.

For a mac rumor demi, this is a pretty clueless statement. Sling is already out there and even embeded in some DVRs. You need to do your home work or turn in your demi status. Maybe you should wait until apple explins how it all works so you can get the picture.

This statement seems clueless. Demi just means you paid for a subscription. It has nothing to do with the length of time someone has been here.

I'd Rather Have Adobe Flash!

Slingbox is nice (very cool), but I'd rather have Adobe Flash.

So, just for clarification, they are still revising the app to work on AT&T's network right? Maybe not specifically optimizing it, but at least allowing it on their network?

Who knows. Sling says nothing has changed, they just have to reactivate code to allow it to use 3g. While AT&T isn't suppose to be involved in weather individual apps get approved or not but here they sound like they do. It will still have to pass Apple's approval, while AT&T agreed to open up 3g to VOIP, Apple rejects apps for duplicating functions. To many hoops, to many people to please. That's why many developers don't want to invest time in much more then fart apps.

You are not reading everything into the equation. There have been a few post already as to why this could go either way. Your dogmatic stance just tells me your no longer viable to this thread.

SO HAPPY that AT&T is allowing sling to run over 3G. Now I don't need to jail break my phone anymore!

and shame on you AT&T .. I hope someone is fired for this .. you can't just make things up .. shame, shame, shame

No. They are just enabling 3G. Their initial app included 3G and was rejected. According to Sling they haven't changed a thing. AT&T is just trying to save face and Sling wasn't going to let AT&T tell everyone that Sling had to reduce the bandwidth or they weren't going to allow it. In actuality, AT&T is worried about losing their iPhone exclusivity and they are now allowing VOIP and video streaming apps that they didn't in the past.

If they can't do it ... someone else will. There are a lot of reports that ATT invested last over the last year than their competitors.

What was the point of ATT fighting to be the exclusive carrier if they weren't going to invest in infrastructure to support the device... I guess people underestimated what these devices would do and how fast. So should we allow Comcast and other large providers squelch streaming content because their systems can't handle it?

The point is the ATT attempted to provide a perception that Sling did something to support their current network. Not the case. ATT should have never gone that route if that's not true.

Fine, if a company holds off data because they can't handle it. JUST SAY IT. AT&T continues to make excuses and blame the app dev's or anyone but themselves. They then try to take credit like they helped Slingmedia develop a proper app?? gtfo AT&T need to focus on building out their network and less time trying to "spin" positive PR, which in this case is 100% lie and then retract it to look like the idiots they are.

As paying customers I don't care what their challenges are, they are making Billions... they can afford to upgrade and expand, they simply don't so they can suck up as much profit while providing "just enough" service not to have a mass exit of customers. AT&T is the only carrier in the world not allowing tethering of the iPhone to my knowledge. This being 8 or 9 months after the announcement by Apple? "Coming soon"? ya right. AT&T will learn pretty quickly why people rate them so low when/if Apple drops the iPhone and iPad on another carrier.

Sling can't be happy anyway, what with Apple taking 30% from them.

(To those who are new to smartphones, Sling always sold their player from their own website and pocketed the whole amount.)

What a start to a year! First Apple disses Google and makes them mad, and now this with ATT and Sling.

How can anyone neg this?

It is one of the funniest stories ever.

I don't think people understand the positive/negative thing.

Why would Slingmedia even come out and say this? AT&T approving this will make Sling a ton of money but instead of just agreeing with them they try to make AT&T look bad and possibly piss them off. This is typical of the way Sling is run as a company. From top to bottom it is one of the worst. Simple fact is that they have the best product and that is why people continue to use them, because with the way they are run overall, they are a terrible company and make horrible decisions.

This is a good point. AT&T could magically have reneged ont he same thing.

They had a massive company come out and said they worked hand-in-hand with sling to bring this to the public and they could have joked around the office but otherwise kept silent, but instead they had to blow it up.

Was a very stupid decision on their part.

Sure they'd build a model for the US market only... they built a special one for China, didn't they? And they stand to gain plenty of customers in the US if it were to go to Verizon. I think that Verizon wasn't interested in the iPhone 3 years ago due to their controlling nature, but that has changed with the new Android devices on their network. If anything, the iPhone offers them more control than the Droid does.

Chinese version is still gsm. It just doesn't have wi-fi.... so no they will not build a CDMA version of this phone. just not worth it. Please people drop this subject. It's dead and over. I'm really tired of you folks re-hashing this same pipe dream because whiny Verizon people can't get an iphone. You don't hear anyone saying anything about the exclusivity of other phones to providers like Verizon and Sprint and even T-Mobile. The only reason why people are crying is because they want an iphone. If you dont like AT&T's service and how they do business, don't buy it. Come on people really gotta get a life here!!

Again how much do they stand to gain with making antiquated techonology like CDMA which makes up only 18 percent of the Global market. The other 82% is GSM.

Verizon themeslves are just as bad as AT&T by their blatant false depictions of AT&T's 3g coverage area. It shows poor taste on all sides of this battle to "rule the world". The simultaneous voice and data is annoying and you can say "well i dont care to do that" uhhhh....cause you can't....duh!!!!

Sure AT&T has coverage issues, but they are better than Sprint and T-Mobile and they are obviously scrambling to get their network up to par by the time 4th gen iphone hits also....

Let's just figure when LTE hits all carriers will have the iphone. Then we can all stop complaining.

I'm pissed. I bought the app and the HD slingbox yesterday because of this. $330 later....

Since ATT launched a developers site about the same time, I think it was more of a publicity tie in.

I don't see anything that useful on the developer site yet. Att suggests that if you work with them when developing bandwidth intensive apps the approval process will be quicker.

Has anyone tried?

Just to specifically answer this- the current version of the app does not work over 3G. You still get the 'need to be on wifi' pop-up msg then the app attemps to connect to the SB.

No updates are being advertised on the app store yet.

+1

AT&T was, basically, just trying to find a diplomatic way of saying, "we capitulated." Instead of winning gracefully, Slingbox slaps them in the face for being political. Very poor business strategy!

I'm the first to point out how unhappy I've been with AT&T's service and pricing, but I still believe in being civil, particularly when someone's making what appears to be a real effort to come around.

Very sad!

Well then TELL SLINGBOX that you're gonna make up some BS and the bonus is that SLINGBOX gets approved. Don't approve it and then expect SlingBox to go along. Of course they're gonna call you out. This kind of lying is just imporrible to keep up with. Say something else, like ATT has upgraded our servers and extensively done testing, and the latest iteration of SlingBox mobile works great. Approved.

By lying, it makes it look like SlingBox has been dropping the ball for almost a year. People that bought slingbox might think, geez if they'd just worked with ATT a long time ago....

No. Screw AT&T. Liars are liars. Call 'em out if ya can. SlingBox can.

It'll be an update to the iPhone, not SB.

Interesting ... I would figure Apple's Coding Tools would have data round this that could be reviewed without ATT. Let Apple and ATT spell out what they consider bandwidth "hogging" and provide the coder with public optimization options. I'm not sure how ATT would have better competency at this than Apple or someone else.

Assume you mean the SB app? Or are you saying this will require an OS update? I assumed it was the app that was disabling it. I thought/think this because I recalled something about the EyeTV app initially allowing 3g streaming.

btw- just asking for clarification- not at all intending to being confrontational.

Before everyone gets all happy about this change (allowing SlingPlayer over 3G) you better check on your ISP's upstream speed because most cable and DSL services cap upload pretty low in comparison to their download speeds. For example, my Road Runner cable service has well over 10Mbps download but only 350Kbps upload. Thus, the video stream that will be uploading from my SlingBox needs to be well under 350Kbps and that means pretty low-quality video (considering that a high-quality stereo audio feed can be up to 128Kbps by itself). Even EDGE can run faster than 350Kbps so it's little wonder that AT&T has finally realized that SlingPlayer shouldn't be much of a burden on their 3G network (for many if not most of their customers).
