Wifi only is a neat concept, but the issue here is many hotels block the ports for Sling. This leaves 3G only. Very frustrating. Plus the speed of many hotel networks makes watching Sling (if ports aren't blocked) impossible.

Anyhow, I will never cancel my unlimited data plan for this very reason.

never had any issue in any hotel with sling. You might want to reconfigure you sling with a different port.

"and a recent channels feature puts a viewer's recent channels at his fingertips."

wow, that's some real good marketing right there.

so THAT'S what the "recent channels" feature does? it shows your RECENT CHANNELS?!??

freaking amazing.

also, sexist. :p

Slingplayer for Ipad

I agree that paying twice is a rip off, but at the end of the day, this new app is well worth it.

I use mine around the house every day, and remotely quite often. It is so far ahead of the Iphone version.

Well worth the wait!

Balls on them to try to charge people twice if they want it to look good on their iPad. With what this app costs ($29.99) I do not feel out of line when I expect the iPad version to be an update for my iPhone app.

I promise not to give them another cent.

+1. That'd be great.

That'd be another $30. I'll skip the iPad version for now.

Mind you that LogMeIn and iTeleport and a ton of other "more expensive" apps made themselves Universal.

Sling was "hard at work?" With what, reorganizing the GUI for a larger resolution? Meanwhile, my iPhone version hasn't seen an update for Retina Display, and now I'm getting weird artifacts whenever I rotate the display. I'm surprised they haven't announced "SlingPlayer Mobile HD for iPhone 4" for $29.99.

Bastards.

30 posts and no ones even tried it.

LOL

Ha! That's because we're all at "work," milking the clock pre-holiday until we *can* try it.

This could be a motivator to get that undercabinet ipad mount I saw in the Apple Store the other day. Would be a great 10" TV to have while cooking or my son has the monopoly on the TV in the family room with Elmo.

Older models not supported and wont work!

So I paid the $30 (on top of the $30 I already paid for the iPhone version). Installed the app and then when I tried to connect to my Slingbox I got an error message about older models not being supported and that I needed to visit Slingbox.com to check about their upgrade offer. THERE IS NO MENTION OF THIS LIMITATION ON THE APP STORE PAGE - I took a screengrab to show that is not listed as a requirement, but when I tried to get a credit from Apple they direct me to a Slingbox.com page that does explain that you need to be running the HD or Solo ro use this app. I'm really pissed off because the $50 upgrade offer is only if you buy at full retail from Sling, when you can but it from numerous vendors already discounted. UGH!!!!!

Bought it, installed it, and started the new app. After logging in, the app advised me that my firmware was out of date on my Slingbox SOLO.

Since Sling does not document the firmware update process anywhere, here it is:

Go to http://setup.slingbox.com, pick the appropriate device in the Slingbox Directory, then click on "Check for Updates". Also, make sure you "Set Up Program Guide".

I don't have a Slingbox, but my grandpa does. I really don't think he'd want to pay $30 for each app (if he had an iPad as well) after paying for the service and stuff in the first place.

Since there isn't a service to pay for I'm not sure what you're saying here.

I do agree that $30+$30 is expensive, but R&D costs for a small outfit like Sling are understandable (I know they're owned by Echostar, but each division has it's own budget).

A note about Slingbox

I've had a HD Sling for a while. Thing is, it it really depends on your computer/Monitor. Some of my installations don't even work right for some inexplicable reasons (a very touchy device IMHO)

But if monitor is right and the computer is fast the HD quality is better than perfect.

But frankly, the device is wonky :D

YMMV

Tried it

it clearly says on their site that it wont work on older models - but - did the f/w update on my slingbox HD and it works like a charm. Its pretty good quality on my home network - proof of the software will be when I'm sitting on the toilet at work.

I'm at work and happen to have my iPad with me today. WooHoo! Bought this right away. Yeah, Yeah, sucks having to pay twice for iPhone and iPad version but I stopped crying about 30 mins after the install. Sweet res compared to the iPhone version in "compatibility mode"

Note: I did have to update the firmware on my Slingbox Pro-HD but not on my Slingbox Solo. I was able to do it remotely with through watch.slingbox.com

Glad I went with the HD Pro box last week it will look great on the Ipad. Now Sling just needs to update their Iphone app to take advantage of the retina screen.

And output to the TV. Many times (like a tailgating) would I love to NOT bring my satellite and dish. I would like to be able to just connect my iPhone to the TV and sling my DirecTV Sunday Ticket to my TV at the tailgate.

Great for those who ALREADY paid $30 for the iPhone version..... sigh....

Sling makes a good product, but they are milking their iPhone & iPad owners..

They don't charge a fee. Their only income stream is the hardware and software, I have no problem with the price.

i don't get this

if you're on the road so much that you only watch TV on your iphone why spend $200 for a slingbox and app and pay for a DVR when you can just pay for Hulu plus or watch hulu on your laptop in the hotel?

well because Hulu plus does'nt have Boardwalk Empire or Dexter, or Weeds or most of any other of the shows I DVR

got the app.

watching now on my home lan, HQ via Slingbox Solo. looks good, but there are some features that are disabled (page down in my directv playlist is grayed out), also some weird things happen on some button pushes (switching to SQ standard quality mode brings up the guide for example).

Pay for what service there is no montly fee I can't get over the amount of uninformed people that make opinions here.

I'm surprised they haven't announced "SlingPlayer Mobile HD for iPhone 4" for $29.99.

I'm sure they are "hard at work" on it. Sling is a bit overpriced. Their web-based players are FREE, but every mobile player you install is going to cost you $30. Back when they had the SlingCatcher (a hardware player to hook to your TV) they charged like $200 for that (if memory serves me correctly).

I've wanted to go with a Sling solution for quite some time, but by the time I add up the cost (especially considering the limited number of inputs on a Slingbox), it never seems worth it.
