I'm a slingbox owner and a former hulu plus subscriber. Hulu plus sucks, it's a long list of old crappy shows. It's frustrating not having access to everything hulu has access to.

Also, with the slingbox, if I'm working in the garage I can bring a laptop out there and it's instant tv. If I'm playing xbox, I can set the laptop next to me and peek in on the baseball or football game. Also, with ondemand, the library of shows I have on demand access to is much better than hulu. I guess I got my fill of 80's tv in the 80's.

However, the iPhone sling app has a **** interface. Also, navigation is slow and clunky. I usually use the zap2it tv guide app, find what I want to watch, then direct tune the sling app. It would be REALLY nice if it worked in the background. This app hasn't been updated in a long time.

Yeah I just cancelled my Plus membership, no need for it now. I agree the Iphone app needs updating and badly, it works ..just.

It takes a special breed of stupid to buy a Slingbox and the player when you can use Hauppauge's solution, Orb Live or EyeTV for free or at a greatly reduced cost.

Slingmedia's entire business strategy is selling to morons and it appears that they do quite a great job of it!

What a great improvement over the iPhone version! The resolution is great, and on wifi the picture is really superb. Even on 3G it looks absolutely fine. But the surprise, and the best thing about the iPad version, is the vastly improved UI. Unlike the iPhone interface, this one is intuitive, fast, and well thought-out.

Being able to watch my DVR'd programs as well as all my DirecTV channels live, in hi-res wherever I am in in the world (with grandfathered unlimited 3G where necessary) on something as compact and light as my iPad is right out of science fiction.

I understand that it may not be attractive to people without iPads, those whose interests in TV can be satisfied by Hulu, or those to whom the $30 additional cost isn't worthwhile, but for me this is the epitome of entertainment technology.

Ha! That's because we're all at "work," milking the clock pre-holiday until we *can* try it.

This could be a motivator to get that undercabinet ipad mount I saw in the Apple Store the other day. Would be a great 10" TV to have while cooking or my son has the monopoly on the TV in the family room with Elmo.

Exactly great timing sling My Ipad will be playing this week's shows while I'm whipping up the holiday fare tonight.

Screw sling. I am selling mine as we speak. I'll use veetle for sports and just stick with Netflix and hulu plus. $30 twice? For the same operating system? Not to mention I got in on windows mobile a few years back too. That $90 just in mobile software. I hate them.

They don't work the same, Orb Live sucks badly.

The Red Sox will be on my Ipad screen alot this coming season, especially on the picnic table.

I am getting an error message saying I have to upgrade my HDPro to the latest firmware. Can this be done remotely or do I have to be within in the local network? Anybody? Beuller? Beuler??

Dish Version is FREE

Anybody who has DISH should already know that the Slingbox/Dish Receivers don't require the Sling app for the iPad or iPhone - they're built right into the FREE Dish App for iPad/iPhone. So you can save your $60 for Movies on Demand, or some other Dish related expense.
See the Dish App on iTunes for more info.....

it clearly says on their site that it wont work on older models - but - did the f/w update on my slingbox HD and it works like a charm. Its pretty good quality on my home network - proof of the software will be when I'm sitting on the toilet at work.

What Slingbox model do you have? And how is the picture?
Thx

I'm sure they are "hard at work" on it. Sling is a bit overpriced. Their web-based players are FREE, but every mobile player you install is going to cost you $30. Back when they had the SlingCatcher (a hardware player to hook to your TV) they charged like $200 for that (if memory serves me correctly).

I've wanted to go with a Sling solution for quite some time, but by the time I add up the cost (especially considering the limited number of inputs on a Slingbox), it never seems worth it.

What would you like to connect that there are not enough inputs for?

Why sling all this hate???

Wow,

I bet most of those slinging all these ant-slingbox comments fall into one (or both) of two groups:

1.) They hate TV. (Yeah, the fact that you have not seen TV since the Andy Griffith show was on prime time makes you sooooo cool!)

2.) They never travel.

Being able to watch my DirectTV live, my DVR (including programs recorded on ANY DVR in my home network), and even Pay-Per-View programming from any reasonably modern hotel on the planet is simply worth ten times what my sling hardware and software costs.

You sling-snobs just don't get it.

Ironic no? :)

You are kidding, right? Have you ever used Sling? Have you ever traveled for a job? Like, traveled overnight? Do you watch sports at all? Have a favorite team that you cannot get at the hotel in DC, let alone Mumbai or Sydney?

Hauppauge's solution? Oh, you must mean the quasi vaporware that is no longer supported, and which crashes 8/10 times (yes, I have used it).

Orb live? Which needs your computer to be actively running and hooked up to your TV video source? So I need to rewire my DirectTV box to my iMac in the kitchen--for "free"?

Eye TV? Yeah, works fine--if you have cable or OTA, which a lot of us don't, preferring satellite.

I think Sling is kind of slimy in many ways, but their product certainly fills my niche, and just works, unlike many of the solutions proposed by you and others who have absolutely no clue about this technology or who it is aimed for.

Sorry for the rant, but uninformed nonsense like this is ridiculous.

And the best part is no monthly fee to Sling to place shift over their servers.

No problem about the rant. It was needed. The people you are referring to are known as the "slingless".

Slingmedia, what can I say .....

I was an early adopter in the UK, great product really nice people, after Blake Krikorian left the company and they were brought by Dish they went down hill fast, support costs $30 per call even if they have hosed your Slingbox via a firmware update.

There was a great community run by Brandon C that disappeared soon after Dish started their own, which isn't so much of a forum, you say something Dish aren't happy about the posts get removed or locked, I asked them about the Pro HD for the UK market a year ago and they just locked the thread and the product is now out in the UK a year later.

Having to pay twice, once for the iPad and once for the iPhone app is a joke.

I've gone down the Vulkano route, the picture quality seems much better at lower bandwidths, the players are free, they have IR learning in the units, but they are still in the early stages so quite a few software & firmware updates.

Oh and the Vulkano mobile software wont work over 3G yet, but saying that the Slingplayer didn't at the start either.

For people planning on watching it at hotels, just know that most hotels wifi speeds are pretty bad. I've used wifi at about 6-7 hotels and the best D/L speeds I ever got were 1.5MBit with the average being about .6-.7 MBit. I always get better 3G d/l speeds than hotel wifi.

Just an FYI before you purchase.

Ipad player

If we could ever find a product that everyone likes.....

As I posted earlier, installed this morning and it works like a champ. The only issue I have has been when connecting via Mywi over the infamous ATT network. Could not get speeds to continually stay over 700 kbps. I think this is why it would only connect in SQ, which STILL looks great!

I travel A LOT and I haven't found a city that I can't catch whatever American sporting event I want. I find traveling around Europe (with a 6-10h time difference is the toughest, but most decent cities have places open until 5am). I find being in India/Asia the easiest because the time difference allows me to watch event during the middle of the day.

I just don't see the point of Sling ... to watch the events in the room by myself?

I've probably spent more € tipping Concierges for providing locations to watch the events than Sling would have cost in the beginning, however, I find value in getting out and spending time exploring the local area.

Overall, it just seems to scream techie gimmick.
