Talking about the skype app not sure if thats what you meant but it keeps running in the back even when I dont even open it at all.
After a reboot it just loads up on its on as soon as the phone starts up.
Weird, I remove it from backgrounding and it enables itself again.
WTF?

Not sure but maybe you have sign-in automatically enabled in sys prefs

It's the Camera.app doing this.

Photos.app is fine.

I've been posting about this for months, since 4.0, nobody listens, nobody from Apple listens, nobody seems to care.

It's why your phone feels faster after a reboot.

I'm glad more people are noticing it, I basically can't use my Camera any more due to this bug

I still get stutters here and there even without opening camera.

Sure you can, no problem here: iPhone 4 on iOS 4.1

No problem that you can see. The problem exists on every iPhone 4 running 4.1. You don't have a special version of the OS or a beefed up iPhone 4. Yours is the same as everyone's.

I wonder if I should take a video of it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I would say, on my iPhone 4 at least, I haven't noticed that it is that much slower than with the original version that it came with.
Me neither, although I think my battery life's gotten a bit worse. :(

This most likely has to do with the extra CPU usage going on in 4.1.

I don't think developers got to use the HDR function before Apple announced it at the event, so they only internally tested it.

I'm pretty sure that something got messed up regarding the HDR function.

Cool, I did that.
Hopefully it was just a bad install.
Anyone else notice that with skype or was it just an isolated case?

I have the app with account but no such thing. Only that when it's active (background or not) it sucks batt life.

Will removing the camera app from the multi tasking bar stop the battery from draining? I have a feeling the answer is no since none of the programs are "running" anyway.

Nope, it persists after closing it like that.

Rebooting the phone takes CPU idle usage back to normal - the 94%~ range

How? Don't see any option in iTunes

If you had already purchased it when it was free and deleted it just reinstall it as normal.

It will then come up with a pop up message that you had already purchased it and the download will be free.

I have had Skype on all my iOS devices since day one. I have the app the TS uses, plus have used many others prior to it. I have never experienced anything you are writing down. It also doesn't make sense.

Also, I don't know how the TS can quantify that the idle camera.app uses CPU cycles like he describes. You really cant tell much difference between e.g. 10% usage and 30% usage with that monitoring app he uses.

When I ran that app before 4.1, I noticed almost NO CPU activity wheny iPhone was idle. Now, there are significant spikes in activity that may be causing some of the animations to jerk.

Also, opening camera definitely affects performance. Try the steps that I noted a few posts up. I can reproduce it every time on both iPhone 4s that are in my household.

Off course I did all that stuff. I actually use both of those apps in parallel on a daily basis. I haven't seen it stutter on me and I use the HDR function exclusively.

I believe you see these stutters and that they bother you. But I can tell you honestly that I haven't experienced any of the quirks you describe.

I know I don't have a different version of iOS 4.1 than the rest, but I also know I'm not crazy and I know when something is wrong.

Again, I believe you and I remember using my 3G with 3.x beta firmware and the camera and photos app's messing things up. It's definitely possible, but if I can't reproduce it here, then there must be some other (external) factor playing here.

Wow. So after following my instructions and opening photos.app you do in fact see the springboard icons fly away?

I'm gonna have to make a video for all of you. Would that be helpful?

I don't want to make you go the extra mile, but on my device everything stays smooth.

I want to go the extra mile because I don't belive that you're seeing the same thing I'm seeing and I'm hoping that by making a video I can point out exactly what I mean because expressing it in words alone is harder to do.

I really want to raise this issue because 4.0.2 never did this and now that we have a new camera feature, this stuff starts happening right after you use the camera or photos. So this is too much of a coincidence that it could be anything else other than the new HDR feature in the camera.

By the way, the same thing starts happening right after I view some HDR photos in Photos.app or if I play a recorded movie.

It's most likely an HDR bug that needs to be resolved whether or not you notice it or not.

I still want to educate you and help you to admit there's a problem (no matter how small that problem may be to you.)

But the problem here isn't 'education': I know exactly what you might be seeing. I also informed you that I have experienced stuttering when I was on my 3G using a 3.x beta; there was one build that really messed up the camera / photo's app i.e. started a memory leak.

I'm just saying that I don't experience anything like from your description: my device transitions between apps as smooth as always, after following your guide.

If you want to do a video be my guest. But I doubt you will show me anything that I haven't materialized already from your earlier statements.

I also want to stress that this is not a matter of not wanting to admit that there might (not) be a problem. I found that assumption mind boggling.
