Your opinion is the only valid one here, how can I dare have a different one. Please get out of the internet.

Stop being a victim :) You are entitled to your opinion and it is ****** that Apple removed the magsafe, but stop not taking responsibility for your actions and whining on a forum. It's of no use.

It's pretty amazing people calling this person "careless" or having them at fault in a situation that would've benefited having MagSafe, when Apple created MagSafe and used it on their computers for years for exactly the type of situation the OP experienced.

At least you get three second-chances now. Break one port, use another... Or just be careful and use some proper cable routing in your workspace. No one should be able to trip on a wire that breaks your stuff.
When in doubt, use it without cable. That is why it's a laptop.

Stop playing the victim.

I had a really really bad experience with MagSafe. The cord would easily become frayed and break. Then its like a fire hazard and I have to pay $80 for a new cable every 6 months under normal usage. Because of MagSafe I was unable to put the charging cable in a more optimal location like I can with USBC.

Wow... so now the way to justify the removal of a great feature, magsafe, is to call the user careless? Great. I hope that when you guys get a non-magsafe MBP you don't experience this kind of indecent. I see you guys treat you Mac like a jewel, and not as a productivity machine.
I do treat my MBP like a jewel, if I trip and fall, I would try to roll on my back and protect my mac. I put hard case on it, ensure that the power cable doesn't become entangled, always be aware of the placement of my MBP and cabling, and anyone sitting near (especially with any liquid drinks), I buy protective sleeves and make sure it travel safe and sound wherever it goes.

The above isn't meant to be sarcastic. If you treat your $4000 machine like something you just casually toss around without any awareness of it existential positioning and threats, then one day it's gonna get hurt, and it's not the mac's fault that it got hurt.

I kinda understand both sides of the argument.
If you act careless and your MacBook gets damaged because you've pulled on the cable, that's obviously your fault, no doubts about that.
At the same time a little voice inside my head is whistling, that Apple shouldn't condition their users to not worry about their cable for nearly a decade and then remove this great usability feature.

lol at all the responses

OP: I completely agree – Magsafe as an idea is very useful and if I go with a new rMBP at some point, I'll definitely get myself a magsafe-like 3rd-party cable. Now I don't miss Apple's specific magsafe because Apple's cables are the worst I've ever seen and get ruined very fast and very easily due to their bad design. A proprietary connector made it impossible to use a 3-rd party charger and non-detachable cable made it impossible to use a 3-rd party (reliable) cable with old chargers, so the only option when it failed was to buy a new 100$ charger.

I would obviously prefer if the included USB-C cable also had a built-in magsafe, but so far it's a tradeoff I'd gladly accept.

So to summarise: Apple's marketing department is full of dolts, but they inadvertently helped an ultimate charging solution to appear that combines flexible non-proprietary standard with magnetic snap functionality.

Kind of curious how one resolves this. I have no strong opinion about Magsafe either way, but what is the solution? If Magsafe is a dealbreaker for OP, then get prior generation MBP? PC's still don't have this so that's not an option. However, very soon in the future, I assume there will be zero computers with built in Magsafe. There will be aftermarket ones but OP wants to return it for not having a built in Magsafe. Go without a laptop?

Send it back, you obviously don't need the machine if you send it back because of your carelessness.

It's like "I once stumbled in front of my Ferrari with a screwdriver in the hand. I could have scratched it so badly... I think I'll send it back. The Ferrari."
So did you think the Magsafe was a pointless feature when Steve introduced it? Afterall, it should be unnecessary if you're not careless.

Check out the snapnator on kickstarter, it's a lot less bulky than that Griffen one.

Nice, but unfortunately doesn't exist yet.

I've actually ordered a Griffin cable to use at home since that's where it's most likely to get snagged. My wife has a 2015 MacBook which also charges off USB-C, and she leaves it sitting out all over the place, just waiting for the dogs to come by or something to fall off the couch and pull the cord with it.

Fortunately I'm safe at work as the power cord won't get pulled way I have it set up there. And at work is where I'm more likely to need the full wattage of my machine's 87w power adapter.

Since this cable supports only up to 60w I believe, I'll just use it for charging at home where I usually just charge when the machine is sleeping (with an appropriate 61w charger).

But if that Kickstarter one above actually pans out, I may consider buying in the future.

How's life there up on your high horse? Must be great to be perfect and never do 'stupid' things. Unfortunately I do stupid things all the time. Please teach me your ways.

Well said, too many here jump to such conclusions. Apple could have easily designed a breakaway "MagSafe" charging cable, it`s not like it`s beyond Apple`s technical prowess. As for the smart asses, you might not be so smug if something untoward happens to your new MacBook & kudos to those that offered practical solutions...

Q-6

Speaking of careless, I tripped over the power cord this evening which removed the USB-C connector from the computer and the power brick from the outlet, but my 2016 15" MacBook Pro didn't move a hair. Fortunately everything is still in good working order.

I almost had a no-magsafe disaster with my Late-2016 MBP.

I normally push myself back and roll on my chair to reach the other side of my room and grab stuff from the shelf. As usual I pushed myself back, but the power chord was entangled with one of my arm rests. Thankfully I didn’t push myself too hard and was able to hear the MBP sliding on the desk before it was too late. It was a scary moment… a 4300 euro machine that I’ve had for less than a week almost ruined because of no magsafe.

I’m not kidding when I say that this little incident is making me consider sending the machine back and getting a refund.

Return it for what? Windows machine with a USB charger?

Griffin makes a magsafe adapter for it silly. You can sleep soundly now.

Rationalize much? Honestly you bought a machine KNOWING it doesn't have this feature anymore. Need to change accordingly. You makey mistakey...Face it, own it. Can't blame Apple, this is simple offer and acceptance. They offered you a machine without that feature, you accepted and bought. Up to you to keep it safe from there.

OP, thanks for sharing your story. You have a very valid point. Also, sorry there are so many *******s in this thread. Just like Apple is going downhill, so are the forums here.

This is Phil Schiller riding Apple's reputation among serious users

I actually experienced the opposite after switching back to my 2015 15" after using my 2016 13".

With the 13", I could plug it in and get in bed and study. When I tried it with the 15", the damn MagSafe kept disconnecting and dropping to the floor. It was super annoying.
