I had the same issue - they replaced the iPad but not the smart cover - odd.
The guy there did say that he had seen it before especially with the red leather smart covers.

I was pretty upset about these scratches before this thread had started. To be honest with you I never even considered going to the apple store have them do something about it. I have a couple questions for those of you who have gone to the Genius bar about this issue to make my appointment go as smoothly as possible. Was there any hesitation by the sales representative at the store to replace your ipad? Also when you received you replacement was it brand new in the box or was it a refurbished model? What exactly did you say? Was it "my smart cover is scratching my ipad due to the magnet sticking through the rubber" and they offered to replace it or did you ask for a replacement? I just don't want to waste my time going in there tonight get rejected and then be SOL as far as getting this taken care of.

There is no way to know how they will react, because each store seems to have slightly different procedures. However, I imagine that if your grievance is justified (some of the pictures are quite horrific here) and clearly a manufacturing defect, then you should expect them to be helpful in resolving the issue. After all, even if it technically "works," the resale value will be impacted. Anyhow, I have had great experiences in the past with Apple products, so I wouldn't worry too much.

As for the refurb issue, I would ask for a new one as a replacement, but I'd be willing to accept a refurb if I had to. Again, only if the damage is significant. A minor scratch near the hinge wouldn't be worth it to me.

You call those scratches? My iPad has road rash all over the side of it as it was strapped to the back of my enduro bike during a nice crash. I am so proud of it and wouldn't trade it for the world. I think that rash knocked the vagina right out of this thing.

hard to follow up that post but I got it replaced by the apple store. The guy said we can do a one time replacement for this so I had him do it. On the way home I was thinking I probably screwed up if I were to drop it and break my screen they won't replace it for free correct? How do they track the "one time replacement". I definitely screwed up but I was caught up in the moment when the guy said we can replace the cover and Ipad for you without me even asking.

They probably jot it down on the computer.

Just found this thread after doing a Google search...

Today I just noticed the same type of scratches on my Ipad. To me, it's not a big deal, but what I'm concerned about is that the magnet is showing in the Smart cover and I can only assume that the scratching will get worse.

Shouldn't the replace the Smart Cover if they are going to replace the entire Ipad?

This was a Father's Day present for me and I believe my wife purchased an extended warranty...not that makes a difference...

Honestly I would take this to apple. That is a production flaw. Mr Ive would not accept that on his iPad, not should you.

I'm noticing a similar problem developing, would you believe it, less than a week of having the smart cover. On either end of the smart cover magnet strip, those little curved parts have a very small chip on the inside edge. These markings are exactly the same on each end. On my iPad edge, there are two faint chips also that line up with these points. I really can't believe this, considering how gentle I am with the applying the cover. Clearly those little plastic bumps aren't properly lifting up the metal...

At the moment, this issue is very small, but I can definitely see it only getting worse - as evidenced by posts in this thread. I'm really thinking I should try get a replacement smart cover and iPad (it's having a "SIM failure" problem too, anyway). What do you guys think?

Also, I have just ran my finger along the magnetic strip on the smart cover, and I can just feel faint bulges in the area where OP had his actually stick through, too.

Does this or will this effect the new iPad?

YES. My smart cover scratched my iPad 3. Took it to the store today and they replaced the smart cover, but not the iPad. The scratches weren't that bad, but they wouldn't replace it. The looked at all of the store's iPads and concluded that it was "normal wear & tear" since all their iPads looked the same. I said...so you're telling me that it's perfectly normal for a smart cover to damage the iPad? The manager said that it's a "feature" of the cover...tongue-in-cheek.

A bit frustrated, but glad I at least got a new smart cover. The scratches aren't THAT bad, even though I wish they weren't there at all.

I put a skin on mine so at least it's safe now.

How strange, I just noticed something that looks like rust on my smart cover. It appears to have stained a small piece on the ipad3 which mostly rubbed off. As far as I know the thing has never been wet, I don't get it. This is the cover after I wiped it off, it was quite a bit worse.

At least no scratches on my iPad though.

That part of the magnetic mounting strip where the stains are, is plastic, so it couldn't be rust. Also the iPad's aluminum won't rust. Is it possible that something got onto the magnetic mounting strip or iPad, unnoticed, before you attached the strip to the iPad?

Beats me. I was working on the theory that the magnets inside were rusting and showing through.

Yup, i also have a small scratch on the ipad.
It's in the middle of the side, but doesnt bother me until it gets bigger.

It looks like you have the tan leather smartcover. Is the part that shows the stains leather or plastic? In the pic it looks like leather. I have the tan leather smartcover, and the antiscratch insert is grey plastic.

It is the light gray vinyl cover. I'm currently working on the theory that I ran across something rusty and the magnets pulled in the rust from something else.

I am being careful putting it on and taking it off so at least I don't have any scratches yet.

Just checked mine. No scratches yet. Had the dark grey one on my new iPad for a couple of weeks. Will check every now and again though.

Had an original grey smart cover on my iPad 2 (the original one had no plastic, putting metal right onto metal) and boy did that thing scratch up. I'm using a newer smart cover on my The New iPad and having zero problems, though.

smart cover damaged my Ipad 2

I have the same damage on my ipad2, and relative burn sign on the smart cover side.
I sent both in warranty to Apple service and i received back with the following comment:

This is just durty, therefore no repair.

It´s the last time i buy a Apple device.

It´s not the rast the problem.
you have a magnetic camp.
the cover has 2 direct conection points, these are the extreme part of the allumin bar and the connection points are throu 2 small peace of plastic. This is ok.
The weak point is the moveble/rotating part, it needs a gap to be able to rotate and this gap for sure has not tollerance.
therefore you have 2 fix points and the rotatng that due too the gap has not a coplete conntact with the ipad therefore the magnetic camp goes in the air.

When you plug the ipad to recharg the battery, the static energy ( ipand energy plug has not ground discharge connection ) goes through the ipag passing also on the magnetic part, therefore you hafe electrone passing in the camp...
Result your Ipad get damaged for losing electrone.

Let´s say Apple is not really so smart as they sale the smart cover.

And moreover why they do not replace the ipad damaged from the original parts?

To avoid this problem I applied tape to the actual magnet and hinges themselves. Cant even tell its there (was really hard to pick up with the camera).

Months later everything is perfect. Might be worth a try for piece of mind:
