Hey, to all of you with the magnets getting out of the cover.
Is it a leather cover or plastic?
Just to be clear on which ones have the problem.

My smart cover left marks on my ipad. I had it on for about a year. However, what looks like scratches actually cleaned off just fine.

This should be little to no surprise to anyone familiar with magnets.

The "plastic" strip on the side I believe is PTFE (teflon) or UHMWPPE - to help minimize scratching for when material (abrasive dust) gets in between the magnet and ipad.

As for the rust - it's likely exactly that. The magnets will grab ferrous iron, and hold it there rather well - you get a little moisture in between that gap - it'll stay and oxidize the iron.

The more often you throw an ipad with a smart cover into a backpack, or set it onto the floor - the more likely it will accumulate ferrous particles which will scratch / rust over time.

Best bet is to pull the cover and wipe both surfaces clean. Then - use some scotch tape to remove any abrasive ferrous material (the tape will be stronger than the magnet on these particles - so it will pull them away).

If you really want to prevent this - I'd echo the advice to use double-sided tape, or covering it in a skin / film prior to putting a smart cover on.

I noticed on my smart cover - one of the pivots (end bars) was slightly warped - allowing it to get danger-close when swiveling, so just as MacMan, I got rid of my smart cover. I attempted to bend it back, and when I saw how easy it was to accomplish, decided that it will only happen again and gave it away.

Wrong, the hinge has a plastic strip so it shouldn't be metal on metal, however two of the magnets are protruding and caused the damage

On my previous iPad 2 (which conveniently needed to be replaced for other reasons), I got a similar scratch because a grain of sand (or something similar) got stuck between the Smart Cover hinge and the iPad. The same thing can happen between the Smart Cover and the screen.

I have just noticed that where the smart cover connects to my iPad, there are 2 marks where some of the aluminium has been worn/scratched away. One of them is pretty bad.

Upon looking at the smart cover hinge, i can see two points where it looks like the metal magnet is starting to poke through the plastic strip.

By looking at the teardown HERE it lines up exactly with where two of the 'blobs' are.

Considering this will reduce my resale value, do you think i should get this replaced before warranty runs out as the rest of the iPad is in MINT condition

That sucks I don't think it will effect the resale too much some people could care less about a few scrapes. what was apple thinking when they designed the smart cover? how could they not know that metal rubbing metal = scratches ?
