What is the purpose of a smart watch? I really can't see any benefit of owning one. Are we really getting that lazy that we can't even reach out to our phone to check a new message/email etc?

It's just a fad and i predict in 2 years time smart watches will be a thing of the past.
It's a shame that Apple canceled the Apple Watch back in 2016.

I suspect that a majority (and maybe even a vast majority) of consumers that purchase an Apple Watch end up using the device for fewer than 90 days total before they sit perpetually dead in the sock drawer.
I’d be amazed if this was actually true. The Apple Watch has been around a long time now and there would be far more pushback in reviews and comments if most purchases were failures. Instead I see an acceptance that the smartwatch has a place in the tech world.

to be fair, smart watches in 2014 were pretty horrible, even the first gen apple watch (2015) was pretty bad (as most first gen models typically are.)

Thread aged well.

So, three years ago I literally knew three people besides me who owned an Apple Watch. Now, I probably know three people who DON'T own an Apple Watch.

Even today, if an iPhone or MacBook already have almost everything you would like to see, for an Apple Watch there is still so much left to evolve: more battery, more sensors, better integrations, the potencial is all there, is still far from being a madure technology.

Update on OP? Did you get a smart watch yet? I know for me I waited till into the series 4 and I even bought a series 3 at a discount when the 4 came out. Lived up to expectations and upgraded to 5, then now to ultra.

Yeah, Apple Watches are pretty common amongst the people I know now. I was the 2nd person in my circle to get one, back with the Series 4. Today I know only a handful of people who don't wear Apple Watches regularly. Two don't have smartphones, one is an Android user, and one has kosmemophobia.
