Ok, who's the wise guy?
Would you care to explain your comment? It sounds like you ran into something odd, like a new smilie, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems like they got all switched around again. Again. Ok, maybe I'm crazy AND they're switched around again.

And now I'm all paranoid because I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or if it's only me.

I wasn't being sarcastic. I never pay attention to the order of the smilies (I type them as text instead of clicking), so I tend not to notice if they change, and I can't explain why they would change.

How many different orderings have people observed? Is it flipping back and forth between two arrangements?

Not sure, I don't really pay attention either. I just went to click on the :winky: and got the  and wanted to make sure it wasn't just me. Missed a couple of days here and there last week because I've been trying to get one of them life thingies I keep hearing about.

So now I have to go to bed wondering if this is random or someone is just messing with us.

Edit: Wait, that  was supposed to be a :p Or a ;) I don't even know anymore.

Yep, I noticed this yesterday as well, but forgot to post about it. We have a nice record of the changes in this thread, but the change before this one is in a different thread started by clayj.

I quite honestly don't really notice the changes much, but sometimes it gets me off... it's just b/c by now I know what to type for all of them... :D

Yes they switched. Mine is arranged just like your post. I just noticed that. I was using the forums this morning and i did not notice it so I think it changed recently.

I was expecting you to end with... "but you're still crazy". ;)

I know there's a joke in there somewhere, but I'd kinda feel guilty making it. :p

It would appear to be more of a random reordering- with smilies unpredictably changing places with each other. :)

I rarely notice, either type them in by hand or use one of the bookmarked smilies.

As I pointed out in this post, the vertical order always remains the same (starting in top left, read down, then move to the top of the next column and read down again). It's just that the starting smilie changes...I haven't noticed a pattern to that yet. I'm not sure if there isn't one, I haven't looked closely enough, or if we've missed some of the changes and thus our data set is incomplete.

How can you not notice,
it is so disorienting when the smilies change place. ;) :D

but i don't click them, or i go by color if i do. i usually know the characters and just type that.

I know starting new threads is frowned upon so I have a suggestion for smilies.

I think for the betterment of this community and to foster good feelings, we should do away with some of the "negative" smilies.

    :(

My proposal is that we get rid of these smilies because they make posts more negative in tone.

When someone replies with the  emoticon, it's usually a put down or condescension and it's sort of offensive to me.

Point taken, spicyapple.

Perhaps making negative smilies available in the Reply to Box window encourages their use, but I think it mostly reflects people's intent to express negative opinions in the first place. The point you make is partly explains why we haven't added many more smilies, as some boards have done, especially the dozens of animated ones with smilies that razz you, bonk each other on the head, throw up, etc. Having those be one click away each time you post would definitely be too much encouragement to use them more than we'd like.

However, a lot what we do here is complain about our technology, Apple or otherwise: reporting our problems and frustrations with hardware, Mac OS X, applications, etc., so  and company are a normal part of our discussions. The  can be used for good or evil, e.g., showing how clueless an Internet columnist is vs. teasing other forum members in a thread. We shouldn't blame the smilie (very much) for its misuse.

As Winston Churchill once said (or maybe it was Marshall McLuhan): "Smilies don't insult people; people insult people!"
