Well that newer "click and hold" exposé feature will partition off all the minimized windows on the bottom part of the screen when all the windows show up... That's one way to figure it out - there's also just right clicking on that icon to see ALL the available windows (some of which may or may not be minimized... so I could see your confusion there)... All in all I still like it...

There's no confusion, I just prefer the way microsoft implemented it back in 2001 with Windows XP with taskbar grouping, albeit without a preview of the window.

I have to agree with the people who felt like the "Marble" features don't really fit with the rest of the UI. I don't understand why Apple can't just give everything a consistent UI ALL AT ONCE, rather than phasing it in slowly...

I mean, certain apps might have their own specific skins, but it really seems like a good idea to keep the basic features of the UI consistent....

Nonetheless, I still like the transparent black :)

I don't know why people keep talking about "Marble" like it's some kind of official Apple UI, because it's not. Mac OS X has never had any UI other than Aqua, and that remains the same in Snow Leopard.

What you'll notice is that Aqua changes over time to always match the cosmetics of the contemporary hardware. Thus, it started off glossy and transparent, and gradually became darker, matte and black, just like the contemporary hardware. Thus, this is the reason why Apple gradually changes Aqua, rather than all at once.

Therefore, I doubt the final release of Snow Leopard will look much different than it does now, and by extension, it will never have a truly "unified" look. By the time 10.7 rolls around, Apple's hardware will likely have new cosmetics, and this will be reflected in Aqua.

But seriously... Why do we still have the "Aqua" scroll bars?

I am pretty sure "Marble" refers to the UI seen most predominantly in the iPhone and MobileMe. I think in 10.7 the last vestiges of Aqua will come to see the button styles of MobileMe and the scrollbar styles of iTunes.

I'm not sure, I just remember reading that in the documentation it says to hold down 6 and 4 on boot to enable it and not all models support it (late 2008 mbp should though). The limitation had nothing to do with whether or not the cpu supported 64 bit, I think Apple was just limiting it to certain models to make sorting through the bug reports a little easier. And I can confirm that my Unibody Macbook didn't support it in 380 or 394. Would be nice if it was enabled in this update though. I'll try it when the update finishes downloading.

That's weird! My UB Macbook 2.4 works just fine in 64-bit with the 6+4 method on 394. Maybe you didn't hold the 6+4 early enough or long enough? I keep pressing those right from the get go until a couple of seconds into that "rolling ball" that appears under the apple logo during boot... Same works on my 3.06Ghz 24" alu imac as well. If I wasn't right in the middle of downloading the latest and greatest build, I'd grab a screenshot to prove it as well..

Yes I would agree with Marble being similar to the look of MobileMe, but not so much the iPhone. The iPhone UI is, in my opinion, quite different from that of OS X.

What are the chances of seeing the new "Marble" interface in Snow Leopard? It is really a little sad that they have half-way ousted aqua for quite a long time now without fully replacing it with something uniform and consistent. :( Everything new they do from iLife to iWork to MobileMe to the iPhone etc. all use what I would say is the "Marble" interface. So why such a delay in Mac OS X? Is it really that much work to reskin? Would they possibly do it in a point update after Snow Leopard is out?

"Marble" was nothing more than a baseless rumor that someone made up. The name doesn't even make sense--do you really want an interface that looks like marble?

Darn! Bought my Mac in mid-May. Just missed the beautiful $9.95 fee. Guess I'll settle for the full $29.

It looks like everybody outside USA and Canada is going to miss this as well, so we get stiffed on software as well as hardware prices :(. I have checked on the UK and French sites (I bought my new MBP in France this month) and there is nothing about the "Keep you up-to-date" program. OK it is not a huge amount but when changing from Panther to Tiger, all buyers worldwide within one month got a freebee.

Wilson:(

Unfortunately 402 hasn't brought back the "Assign Application To" option when right-clicking on an icon in the dock.

I think the new look for the contextual menus in the dock look absolutely fantastic and they really don't seem that out of place to me. They match up perfectly with the look of the stock 2d dock. They also look really great with this 3d dock:

From DaringFireball:

But while I am convinced that “Marble” is a real design project at Apple, I no longer believe it is slated for Snow Leopard. A new visual appearance isn’t something Apple can spring on third-party developers at the last moment. If they plan to ship Snow Leopard soon — say, by the end of August — that just isn’t enough time to allow developers to update their software to look good under a new UI theme. (There’s also the problem of creating software that looks good under both the new and old themes.)

So my hunch is no Marble for Snow Leopard — that it’s now a 10.7 thing. But I’d never bet too much money on the side of Apple accommodating the needs of third-party developers.

Before you even ask who is John Gruber just know he was the only one that was right about all that happened at WWDC.

I really appreciate how Apple is providing full kernel updates to this one via software update--hope it continues as the summer progresses.

How should it look like

I think that dock's icons should show the number of documents down onto the icon, like this:

Is this version of Snow Leopard stable enough to use as an every day OS replacement for Leopard? Anyone using it this way?

Yes sure is. I use it for email, web, music, photoshop no problems yet. Go for it. Or you could just use bootcamp and see what you think.

It's getting more and more touch-screen-friendly every day. Touch and hold expose. Drag and drop expose where the windows pop up on screen, this is definitely there for using fingers rather than a mouse and keyboard combo.

Exactly. SL is also being designed for a multi-touch device. It's becoming obvious.

I used it on my MacBook, but since I got my mini I think I'll wait it out until Sept. But so far I havent had a problem except for the track pad freezing every now and then.

Snow Leopard has been my primary OS on my MacBook and iMac since the WWDC build first leaked. Been having no issues at all, and this latest build is rock solid for me.

Can you position the desktop image? I mean like click on the little preview window and use the arrow keys to adjust it.
