Am I the only one looking forward to a new GUI!? :D

I hope that was sarcasm since there is no new UI, I really hate the Finder and Apple still haven't fixed/updated it with 15 year old features in other OS such as cut/paste.

Cover flow view in Finder is pathetic. They need to overhaul it big time.

"Put Back" - Yay a Windows feature that should have been on OSX.

Hope they fix wireless networking from Leopard. Also, hope finder becomes more like windows explorer-like.

This is not true at all. The "multi-touch" that was debuted on the Macbook Air involves adding hardware, ie. the same chip used in the iPhone.

Multi-touch works fine on older macbooks under linux, apple just need to release the driver for it to work on osx.

There's tons not on that list that we simply won't know if it works or not.

1. Net Extender (Sonicwall VPN client)
2. Keepass
3. True Crypt
4. Harmony Control Center
5. Sling Player?!!?!?
6. HP Media Center (for those of us with EX485 network storage)

And plenty more.

I don't feel like being a guinea pig for Apple. They should be the ones providing a compatibility list, not leaving it to us users to figure it out for them.

Most of those people need to get on the stick. It's not Apple's fault they haven't been updating their stuff.. Most of them are ADC people so there's no reason they couldn't be working on fixes to their apps..

I'm guessing a good 85% of the most used apps listed will be 10.6 compatible within 2-6 weeks. With the exception of Intuit who seems to have a problem even deciding what their new app even looks like.

Yes you will then get the other gestures

This is incorrect.

Does anyone know exactly which Macbooks will now support multi-touch gestures?

The MacBook Air (1st gen) and then beginning in the MacBook Pro (early 2008), and on. The White/Black MacBooks never contained the multi-touch hardware.

This update only adds gestures that didn't exist when these multi-touch MacBook Pros (and 1st gen Air) came to the market. (4 fingered gestures).

Will the white MacBooks be getting multi-touch?

No.

In the end, if you can currently open up an image in Preview, and rotate your fingers to rotate the image, then you will get the 4 fingered gestures. Older MacBooks that cannot rotate images in preview, will gain none of these features.

Oh my, that screenshot looks repulsive.

I meant the theme, referred to as marble. So I meant a new look not a new UI, sorry.

I have a unibody MBP with both the 9400 and 9600 graphics chips. So does SL allow you to switch between them without logging out? Or does it allow anything cool like using both at the same time?

They can sense 4+ fingers though, only needs a driver for multi-touch to work.

Okay. Still that "hack" is not multi-touch that would allow for pinching/rotating etc. This is not something Apple is doing with software, and the hack isn't going to help either.

I was only messing around. I agree that it's repulsive, but - believe it or not - it's one of the themes available for Google's Chrome browser, called 'Marble'.

Nope. Still logging out on 10A432. And one at a time. :(

Hmm, I've gone ahead and ordered it, but I likely won't install until I'm sure everything I use regularly is going to work as expected, and that no ugly bugs crept into the final build.

I'm hoping it's popular given its price-point, as for intel-based Macs it seems a no-brainer with all the future potential, but at the same time it doesn't have any obvious features that new users are likely to want to jump-on, though the promise of better performance and even further improved security should count for something.

Apple have already told us they like Finder how it is and that it will not be enhanced.

For 99% of tasks you won't notice a UI difference between Leopard and Snow Leopard.

The linux driver does support pinch gestures & they work on older macbooks.

Stacks navigation is an incredibly useful feature for me. It's worth the upgrade alone.

iChat still doesn't seem to have the option for a unified buddy list, and Chax doesn't work with SL because it's an input manager. That is keeping me with Adium.

Yeah but what if you get a new macbook and then 10.7 has features that only work with a newer macbook?
Then I'll buy a notebook after 10.7 is out. I'm sure that Tiger and Leopard came completely unannounced.

I use my MacBook mostly for Safari and iTunes. After that it's having a machine on the road for the IT support that I do. I make money with the portable computing it offers not how fast I can encode something in FCP. I don't need a 3.06 GHz MacBook Pro. I have my desktop for that at a fraction of the price.

NOOB question, sorry: Will the 9600m GT do this GPU accelerated video decoding as well, or is it only the 9400m?

iChat, Screen Lock, Scanning?

The big question for me about iChat is, will video chats be backwards compatible with users still running Leopard? We currently chat a fair amount with my parents, who are on a G5 running Leopard. Obviously Snow Leopard is out of the question for them.

Also, from Apple's page:
Apple said:
Configurable time window for screen locking.

If you set your Mac to require a password to wake from sleep, you can now add a delay of five seconds to four hours before the password is required.

I hope this also applies to the screen saver. I'd like to have the screen saver come on in 5 minutes, but only lock after 30. Windows and Linux have been able to do this for years, but not OS X.

One of my few concerns (other than the usual .0 release bugs, which is why I'll let the rest of you beta test for me :D) will be whether my current HP printer drivers will work well in the new OS. HP last updated them a day or two after Leopard was released, and I'm sure they don't plan to do anything more with these particular drivers. I'd rather not run old junk on a new system, so I wonder if I can get away with only using the Apple-provided stuff with my all-in-one printer (PSC-1501). Apple's page has some encouraging info for scanning:
Apple said:
Import from scanner.

Snow Leopard simplifies scanning by putting scanned data directly into Preview. Now you can scan, view, and correct your files and images in Preview. The scanning interface even detects the placement of images or documents on the scanner to automate the selection of regions to scan.

Cool, so if this works and normal printing works without installing extra drivers, I'm all set. Maybe I'll actually upgrade before the end of next month...

Speaking as one who thought the holographic nebula package for Leopard was pretty cool... that annoyed snow leopard with piles of snow sitting on him looks slightly goofy. (I can't even FIND another picture of a snow leopard that has let himself get covered. Maybe he just woke up.) I'm looking forward to the release regardless :) (Or rather, 2 weeks later when I trust it enough to install it!)

He looks like he needs a caption.
