iTunes Store already has cover flow and gets the new QuickTime automatically afaik. iTunes will have to be rewritten in Cocoa in order to make a 64-bit version even possible. iTunes has gotten to be a real dog and has doubled in size since just 4.x even.

Yes, the current iTunes had coverflow. This was just an observation that if they wanted to recreate the same interface with Webkit, they could.

There is an easier way of booting to the 64-bit kernel than editing the plist file. Just hold the "6" and the "4" keys together when booting after the chime sound. You can check your kernel in the Activity Monitor.

It does not work here :(
After type:
Code:
ioreg -p IODeviceTree -w0 -l | grep firmware-abi

I receive the following from terminal:
Code:
| | "firmware-abi" = <"EFI64">

It should work, doesn't it?

i cant believe people are complaining about the $9.95 update price. Think about this, its $29 to update to SL for lepord users, and $50 to update to WIN7 for vista users. and im not even going to talk about the rest of the prices.
Both of those prices are cheap, and I expect many people will be taking advantage of them.
if you knew anything about leopard you would have seen that bamboo grove has been there since the beginning of leopard, this is not new to snowleopard
Which was released after Vista.

And yet "bamboo"-style wallpapers have existed for decades, so there's really no issue here at all.

I think you misunderstand what these components are. WebObjects is a Web Application Framework, like Struts or Catalyst or Ruby on Rails for their respective platforms. It has nothing to do with client side rendering. I don't even think there's a name for Apple's XML layout system for iTunes, but it's an in house thing for an in house purpose.

Probably you're right. I've never used WebObjects. But I don't think they are using Webkit in iTunes. It certainly doesn't act like webkit at all. I'm speculating that they'll switch the store portion to webkit. And if they redo the app in cocoa, they will get that for free. And that might have been one of the main reasons they've been developing safari on windows. To use webkit in iTunes.

Oh really? How much faster?

(unless you have more than 4 GiB of RAM and 64-bit aware applications, it's unlikely that you'll see any difference...)

Currently, our 32-bit kernel prevents us from seeing a good speed boost. A good 64-bit kernel should yield some results in performance. Not much to excite about but for a system with limited hardware performance, even a little speed boost helps.

Here's a few good articles:

http://64-bit-computers.com/windows-vista-32-bit-vs-64-bit-benchmark.html
http://www.geekpatrol.ca/2006/09/32-bit-vs-64-bit-performance/

It doesn't really turn it on by default for any systems that runs it just fine. You have to turn it on yourself in order to boot the kernel in 64bit mode. Which is done by adding arch=x86_64 in boot.plist file.

It didn't work under the previous builds. I tried it on 10A380, 10A402a, 10A411, all of them failed when I tried to force into 64-bit mode

That's probably because the Macbook Air doesn't have a 64-bit EFI.

These are Windows Benchmarks and I don't really think they will be the same here.

yay !

i thinks its a really sweet feature! :)

minimized windows show below the "line" and open windows show above it.

sweet indeed !!!!
I was angry the minimized ones weren't showing up

Regarding Torrenting

For what it's worth, I wouldn't worry about getting punished for torrenting Snow Leopard. Copyright enforcement is at the discretion of the copyright holder, and Apple has nothing to gain by punishing those who are interested enough in their product to go through some hoops to get it before it's actually released.

I would expect it to be in iTunes 9(or X if they feel like it). And while they're at it, make DVDs play in iTunes instead of DVD player. And once they've done that, they might as well ad BD support! Yay! Yeah, not going to happen:p

Dont you mean when the 'X packedges come out? I doubt :apple: can resist that:D

SG :apple:

iTunes is already too bloated. It should be music and music videos.

DVD player would handle it better anyways.

Just thought ill share a list i made in my head. dont know if there 100 % right, so please tell me if there not.

its kinda cool to see what apple still has to do. Snow Leopard is really only part 2 out of 3 in some ways. "Leopard being part 1"

Carbon Applications that need to be rewritten. OR mostly Carbon Applications that need to be updated. . . . .

iTunes
Soundtrack & Soundtrack Pro
Apple Remote Desktop
Compressor
Final Cut Pro Express & Final Cut Pro
Motion
Color
Batch Monitor
Apple Loops Utility
DVD Studios

Cocoa Applications that need to make the 64bit "leap"

Keynote
Numbers
Pages
Dashboard
GarageBand
iMovie
iPhoto
Logic Express & Logic Pro
MainStage
iWeb
DvD Player
Quicktime Broadcaster
Podcast Capture

also did i miss any Applications out ? ? ?

You would think Apple would have rewritten the whole FCS package in Cocoa. Is this not the case?

I'm really starting to hate that Aero look on the dock contextual menus. It looked better a few builds ago when it was just a white-ish outline and a matte black, semi-transparent (no blur) background.

The blurry glass thing looks terrible in Vista/7 and it doesn't look any better in OSX. I sure hope they change their minds.

DVD player would handle it better anyways.

You guys seem to be missing the obvious solution of just having Quicktime handle DVDs. Any other method for playing DVDs makes no sense (especially having a separate app for it).

My iMac 7,1 continues to not be able to boot into 64-bit
My iMac 8,1 continues to work great in 64-bit

QT would be best, but DVD Player would be better than iTunes if QT doesn't handle it.

Apple wouldn't have added it if they didn't think it looked better. They did so because it now uses the same blurring technique that the transparent menu bar uses. It's all about consistency, something that everyone seems to want Apple to add in Snow Leopard.
