I'm normally the first one to jump on board with these sort of ideas but...

come on, this is just too dumb.

Quick Look is pretty cool. Just hitting space bar and instantly having the screen filled is great. I don't bother opening movie files at all anymore.

but...

Icons?

Who wants to watch a 64x36 version of an HD movie? This is just silly.
Hopefully this means 512-pixel icon support in Snow Leopard's Finder.

But if they could somehow dynamically chose which frame of a video is shown in the preview would be great. Most videos start with a completely black frame and then it fades in... or a logo comes up or something. So... most of the previews icons for videos on my computer are totally useless for identifying them. If they want to make it so it'll like... choose the frame that appears to actually show what the video is of... maybe it could take all the frames from the first few minutes and then chose the frame that has the most in common with the surrounding frames... or something like that. Better yet would be if the people who make the video files could make a cover for them... so recognizing the virtual video by its icon would be as easy as recognizing a physical movie by its cover.
Skimming for the Finder.

I have icons set to 72 on my 30" display. what size do you think they would need to be on a 42" LCD ?
100.8, or the equivalent of that when taking account varying pixel sizes.

this is rather cool if u wanna hear a song preview and not use quicklook for it, and no more hitting apple + I in order to hear it.

I so hope that is in snow leopard, wouldn't that count as a new feature though?
Not really, no. Just a different way to get to previews. There are at least three ways now: column view, Get Info, and CoverFlow, all of which do the same.
Funny how nobody has notice that if this "feature" is present, you can no longer just click on the file to select it.
Sure you can. The play button doesn't appear instantaneously. Browse and double click works just like it did before.

Why would you watch any movie in preview mode? You're not playing the video, you're using its preview to identify it if the filename doesn't give you enough. If you want to watch the whole thing, open the file or use Quick Look.

Nearly all of my icon previews show something other than the first frame. It depends on the source and the authoring program, I guess.

no you don't

Actually, he kinda does. When you are in column view in finder, when you hover over an music file, it gives you a play/stop button when you hover over it.

true, usually people consider a feature windows cant do, and OS X couldnt recently do, a new feature.

Since linux is much less then minority, noone really considers it wit these things.

Does Vista even have a quick-look like feature? Or are windows users still stuck opening window notepad to view a text file? haha... now that i use leopard all the time, the thought of opening an application just to view a simple file seems extremely silly... but just a little more then a year ago I would do it all the time without thinking twice.
Vista has dynamic icon previews that can be used to preview text files.

i am serious.

Then you'll be able to provide screenshots to prove it.

P.S. I trust you actually bought a legit license for Leopard in order to put Mac OS X onto your Dell. Otherwise you're just a thief (and from my 10.5.4, also a liar).

don't have any clue how this feature was enabled on my copy of leopard, which yes, was bought online, 129, i have run SEVERAl os updates, and installed several solutional apps to make things run smoothly on the XPS , mostly from insanelymac and mac wiki so on and so forth...i LOVE this finder preview feature guys..

hmm

Wow, this thread just got ugly. But yes, he is wrong. I even sized the icons above 72 and hovering over the icon doesn't work in 10.5.4.

shots don't lie..

check that one again buddy.

looks like i am not the only one that already see's this preview feature available..i have had this for roughly 2 months

Uh, Macboy, the new feature being added applies to icon view. Yours is in column view. That's why I said you were wrong. I think we both misunderstood. My apologies.

PS- This feature is also present for videos in coverflow view mode.

Except switching from the Finder stops the playback which is kind of irritating.

This is seriously cool!

I saw something similar to this in a linux distro a bit ago (i think PCLinuxOS.) Although it was more of a skimming effect on audio files - it got annoying to be honest because when ever you moused over an audio file it would start playing and if you were already listening to some music you would get a horrible mix!

im gonna go ahead and let the pictures do the talking sky

its not my fault you are deprived of your finder features =)

jealous much?

I'm sure he isn't jealous of a fail, plus everyone using Leopard has this feature, but in icon view they don't.

been mentioned but for this to be useful (and the current column preview mode) you have to be able to skim through.

Its possible to skim through videos in leopard in quick look and column view but you have to press play again. But there is no visual indication on how far into the video you are.

Theres nothing you can do with audio files.

In some ways it was a step back in removing the seek bar from the column view and get info window

Don't worry just ignore me, I re-read it and I think I misunderstood it the first time

If its just a still image then the below is still the same but if its an animated icon, can't personally see a use for it.

Original Post below :)

I know this a new feature for os-x but windows vista can already do this with most files (the program has to be coded for it in windows), so I wouldn't say its revolutionary.
I know any video with the right codecs installed can do this in any location, as long as the size of the icon is big enough. Office also has the option (since the last version iirc), adobe used to until adobe wanted us all to use their crap browser, any images do, solidworks and 3ds max do or atleast did as well.

I only really find it useful for video's and images, the rest of the files are just too small to be of any use, coverflow is a much nicer approach when using a file manager, although the 'sample' icons are good for a quick launch approach on the desktop.

Nearly all of my icon previews show something other than the first frame. It depends on the source and the authoring program, I guess.
The preview frame is about 10 seconds into the movie.

Can you read the text, or does it just show a thumbnail-sized page? Last time I saw Vista, the icon preview was just like the OS X icon: it shows the thumbnail version.
That's what I was thinking. At least Vista's icons can go up to 256·256 and there's the option of a preview pane in Windows Explorer that supports large previews.

im gonna go ahead and let the pictures do the talking sky
Photoshopped pictures can do a lot of talking, although these pictures aren't.

The "stop" button is actually a "pause" button (both Cover Flow and column view). Weird.
