NC, I compared TrunksGoku to your pictures and TrunksGoku's screen seems to display the blacks much better than yours with less washout affect. An average user could easily live with Trunk's screen.

So the theory that Sammy has started is the 9C8C panel is better than the 9C89 panel?

Or is this just a quality control issue?

Came home decided to do some comparison shots against my 20" dell lcd

The really dark scenes did have a hard time with details

The backlighting on the MB display is very uneven. That's my gripe. Look at the black bars on the top and bottom. The top is actually pretty black, the bottom is grey. The last picture shows this perfectly. Bottom half, crappy. Top half, quite good.

I had two different machines with 9c89 panels, and they were very different. The first was gorgeous. It did have a limited viewing angle, but that was to be expected. The colors were vibrant, and the whole thing really "popped."

It had a dead pixel though, and the screen of the replacement was washed out and yellow. Absolutely terrible. I just ended up getting my money back.

I don't know what that means, but that's my story.

My plan for tomorrow is to put Iron Man on a thumb drive and when I return it to Apple try the same seen w. different MB's. If it looks better, I'll request an exchange. If not, take the offered store credit for new Air or I may be coaxed into another MBP but they're so freakin' heavy... I'll post back on what I see and either it'll be one last "glad I'm done with the MB" or "mine was a lemon, this ones better." fingers crossed... I really do love everything else about it. Really. The display just breaks it for me and as much of the shiny niceness is awesome, I can't handle looking at that everyday.

I need to get a copy of iron man and give that scene u have a try cuz the MBA screen looks really really good

A question

Will an Apple store do an exchange if you bought it third party (as a warrenty issue), if I want another screen?

...that is, if we isolate an acceptable replacement version.

cuz I haven't received mine yet but I don't think I could use a notebook with images such as NC has posted or the ones on Gizmodo.

Some of the other variants look ok though.

Try to get the spec and screen numbers etc, for all us hapless users :D

I was in yesterday and went to all six on display and they were all the 9C89 panels. Now it looks like even though they may have the same model #, they may have different manufacturers. I didn't check the actual manufacturer details in terminal but I will tomorrow if I find they're better.

So far it looks like LG's are more crappy? Jessica has the same number as I do and so does Sammy.

Forgive me in advance but Sammy posted the instructions on an earlier page. I'm currently a Windows user and looking to switch to Mac. I'm not familiar with the Utilities part of the computer she is referring to. How do you get there? Is it under System prefs? I want to know so that I can check up on some Macbooks here in Canada at the Apple Store.

Do you mean the terminal command? That is under Applications>Utilities>Terminal
Then you would paste the aforementioned command.

Thanks.

These were Sammy's instructions: "You need to go start ColorSync Utility in Utilities. Then select your display profile form the left bar and double click open it. Then scroll down to number 13, and you will see the information."

Is the ColorSync utility in Utilities or do I have to open up Terminal?

I just got my new MB. Very happy but I now understand what everyone on this thread is saying about the washed out screens. I also have the new MBP and the pro screen is much better. Also I have 1 dead pixel on my MB:mad: anyone know if there is any fix for this? Not bad...I will live with it if I have too. Here's a quick pic:p:D

Yeah, ColorSync is under utilities as well.

Absolutely! Calibrated or not, it won't help what you see there. The calibration took out the nasty blue cast to the display and warmed it up with real whites but the lack of dark hues can't be helped with any calibration.

It's going back tomorrow. If you want any more pic's or info on the MB side be happy to share before its premature departure.

Thanks NC MacGuy....

These pics are really gonna help out. I can't afford the pro and doubt I would throw 1600 or the 2.4, would you still recommend the base model? Of course I would be comming from the M1330 which has a nice LCD but i've been thinking of buildng a desktop and getting a nice LCD to go with that while having a macbook just for web, music, email, etc.

Sorry, I'm late to this thread, does anyone know how to check what version number my panel is in my new Alu Macbook? I haven't noticed anyone explain how to do that.

Don't get me wrong, the MB's are nice machines. The 2GHz model will do all the things you want to and more. Before I put a movie in or watched some trailers on it, the only issues I ever noticed was adjusting the screen a bit much to lighten up dark pictures.

after doing more tests, mines "sucks" too. On the fence about this now. I think im going to take it in and see if they allow me to return it with no restock fee and wait for the new MBA. If the problems are fixed on that, then ill stick with that.

That's the whole point. You've got 14 days to try it and make sure you like it and if not, attempt to get Apple to refund your money without a restocking fee. If everyone with a crappy display went and said so, all MB fans would be better off in the grand scheme of things.

Unfortunately for most, they'll accept it and regret it. After the door is shut and your stuck with substandard, high dollar crap you'll be reading these same boards looking for the "new, better MB displays on the horizon" thread.

All the pictures we have seen here have been comparisons between the new MB and another montior which isn't a fair comparison.

Anyone here have the older generation MB and wants to do a comparison on the monitor quality (with pics of course)?

I think that's a more valid comparison.

I tested my blackbook (I know this thread isn't about that one, but I want to compare the blacks) and my blackbooks screen isn't too bad with the blacks compared to my LCD Dell (which is pretty nice--I tested it out on 3 movies side by side). I don't see the problems some of you are having with the new ones with my blackbook. My friends new 2.0 colors pop a little better on his, but is also having some of the black problem you guys (some of you) are having. He is also using the one (model) you guys are claiming might be better. His isn't.

I going to sell my black Macbook next year and I hope they fix this problem by then and add FW.

As we all know Apple has always used different companies to make their screen on their Macbook. I think on the last gen they used 4 different companies and each one varied as far as quality. Samsung made the worse one last gen and I luckily didn't get that one. Mine isn't bad at all. I don't care about graphics b/c I don't really use anything that requires good graphics (nice to have though and I'm glad Apple did better with the new one).

What part of this would give anyone the feeling that they have to accept the display as low-end Mac and that's what you get? Read how Apple is portraying the display. Anyone paying a restocking fee because the display isn't what Apple advertised is crazy "Movies and video offer rich colors and fine details":

Could somebody please be kind enough to explain to me how to find the version number of my screen on my MacBook?

Are you for real? I understand you hate the screen. Just go and exchange it tomorrow.

Is that your approach to everything in life? I guess you must not eat out at restaurants or fast food at all because you'd end up returning your food because it doesn't look the same in real life than on the tv screen or in the advertisements.

Do you ask for refunds on your Big Macs?
