I am sure it was court ordered information from Apple by the attorneys to make sure the "people" are aware of the litigation efforts... SOP

I have this problem also... my display remains black and I do have a computer that falls into the defective 8600 card. My ProCare ran out in August,2010... one month ago... SUCKS!!! My question is if they say my motherboard needs replaced, will this be covered also thru the 8600 video card issue?

Would it help me to mention the error someone posted the pic of (Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error. 4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController)

I really really think this is crap that one month past my ProCare and the thing dies??!!!! I am pissed! especially since I was at an Apple Store asking questions about how hot the thing gets and they just said well you should never have it touching you... lol... why again do they call them "LAPtops"?

They quit calling them laptops in around 2002 when someone burnt his lap and sued.

I got the class action email too, BUT....
Where did they get our emails from??? Whos telling them who bought the affected notebooks?

The courts likely ordered Apple to hand over the contact information of the people who bought said laptops.

I have one of the Macbook Pro's with famous Nvidia and cople weeks ago experienced the same issue as yours. First visit to Genius Bar was unlucky: " it's logic board and £700 to fix" , after a bit of search on net I went second time ready to "fight untill the end" but "Genius" guy pointed on Nvidia Graphic Chip straight away and with no questions took it for free repair under extended 4 years warranty from Nvidia!

Just got a call from the apple store. It seems like they did repair/replace some of the internal parts of the laptop, one of three items being the logic board, and some audio related part which I was shocked since I never had an audio problem. I'll pick it up later on today but am wondering will try provide documentation of what was done for the repair?

I have an appointment with a "genius" on sunday about the 8600 problem. Is there a fee just to see him/her?
I'm just trying to figure out what to expect.

I'd insist and I will ask to provide documentation of what was done for the repair! and what about the warranty for repaired parts???

No fees to see a Genius

I had mine replaced a while back when it failed
They had a HD with a tester set up
Hooked it up, and just said "yep" and took it in and replaced everything at no charge
It did take about 2 weeks though

Thank you very much. Very helpful.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does "ssh" mean? Or any of the last sentence for that matter?

thanks

Also, do I have to show proof of purchase or anything like that?

She's just suggesting ways you can show the computer still boots up and works, just the video is dead. (although if the genius bar people run the test properly and it is indeed an 8600 problem, you won't need to do any of that). :)

Good luck!

Yeah, I was just suggesting ways to be well prepared for the appointment, but the Genius should run all those for you. I'm not sure about proof-of-purchase. I had AppleCare, so they had my computer in the system.

Went to Apple today for a diagnostics test on my MBP. The genius said that while trying to run the diagnostics, nothing would come up. No error or anything for that matter. I told him that it hasn't worked since my screen distorted and wouldn't load after a restart. He seemed a little frustrated, trying to remove the RAM and trying restarts with different configurations. Nothing happened. Still a black screen.

Then he said, "there's no way that I can tell if your GPU is bad if I can't get it to load. But, I think it's your logic board that crapped the bed. You have no warranty left or never had applecare for that matter. But I'm going to go ahead and replace the logic board free of charge"

I was really happy that Apple stepped up and did this for me. I've never had any problems in the 3 years I've owned my MBP 15'' so this was a relief. The way he treated me makes me feel good about purchasing more Apple products.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out on this thread. Greatly appreciate it!

okay, i paid $330 the first time i had repairs for my mbp, the computer would not boot/chime and had a black screen, but on the invoice i received back from the repair center, it states graphics processor issue. i did try calling to receive a refund, but they wouldn't reimburse me since the guy said that my computer did not boot, and the symptoms were clear on the article online that the computer had to be on (other people who had the same exact problem as myself got a refund though..). one month later, i get a distorted screen and apple repairs it for free because it's within 90 days. my question is whether or not i should opt in for the class action lawsuit?

thanks. :)

I would have to call back or go in and ask to speak to the manager and insist on the refund of $330 ... maybe the repair facility got it to boot and recognized the prob. Or are they always so sloppy with the paperwork that they say one thing and do another? Just because they can't test the chip didn't mean it didn't fail and take the logicboard down with it.

Seems they are starting to loosen up a bit and repairs are coming more easily now. I just got mine back from my appointment on Saturday (no boot or chime) and they repaired it for free without hardly any pushing. I did have a copy of the class action suit and a stack of articles about the whole debacle with NVIDIA8600 where the "genius" could see it. They did the repair in 6 hours.... but I didn't know and already drove the 70 miles home :( Now I have to find a ride back to pick it up....

I never had any of the serious symptoms of the faulty GPU, but can you guys tell me if these symptoms are enough to get a replacement chip, or can I go and get it replace without symptoms whatsoever, just because I checked it with the serial number and it is indeed eligible.
The symptoms are:
- when I boot it up, I first see 1/3 of the image of the desktop, and then after a second it loads the desktop entirely
- after I use a graphic software like Pixelmator or Photoshop, or after I play a graphic intense game, I get a 'frame' expose and minimize effect, it's not looking so smooth as usually (this fixes after I put the computer to sleep or reboot it)
- the gpu diode gets hot around 78 degrees celsius maximum
- even this is not a graphic issue, when it's charging the battery the fans go to 6000 rpm even if i'm doing dull tasks such as browsing, etc. (which in the full charge state the fans never go faster that 2000 rpm)
- sometimes (rarely) I get a slightly distorted (or missplaced) picture, but only on a small portion of the screen (like 200px wide maximum) usually when i'm doing intense work on it, usually this fixes with an expose action.

The Mac is the one in my signature, a 17 inch SR MBP, with an 8600 GT chip.

I would appreciate any help with this, because I don't have an Apple store or an Apple authorized reseller in my city. Thank you!

You need to be exhibiting issues.

Either way, they run their own diagnostic utility to determine whether or not the logic board needs replacement. Just because it falls within the manufacture date does not mean you automatically get a new logic board.

My screen for a time was intermittently freezing up/distorting and external monitor worked fine. Replaced the LCD, only to get black screen instead of distorting. After a while though it's fine now. I'll just have to wait and see.

What if you have AppleCare? apprantely they replaced my logic board, hopefully the distorted video doesn't happen again..

it's 90 days regardless of applecare warranty or not. If your computer is under is covered under apple care for the next 90 days then it doesn't matter. If your Apple care warranty were to expire in 7 days, the logic board that was replaced would still retain a 90 day warranty from installation date.

Guys, you shouldn't be too anxious going to an apple store. It's a painless process (unless you get a particularly bad Genius that refuses to even scan it).

You shouldn't have had to pay that if your 8600m croaked.

that's what i thought when i spoke to the tech specialist, but he said because my computer didn't boot there were 'other problems' with it, not just the graphics card

Hmmmmmm

OK...i got the nvidia failure...
so i went and booked a genius appointment in robina apple store this morning and got it fixed before the end of the business day!
the receipt i got says i got the rev2 board, part no: 661-4960

NOW. the machine is working fine, but im just curious, cause the right hand side ports on my computer (firewire 400, dvi, usb, ethernet) are all still the same (old, dusty etc..) NOT new looking...
if they did change the whole logic board, shouldnt these ports be new as well???
did they really give me a new rev2 board? how do i find out for sure??? maybe they just resoldered the old gpu back onto the board :S ???

EDIT: my itunes just asked me if i want to authorise my machine, again!..i did and now i have '2 machines' authorised under my account...even though theyre both the same machine....wtf is going on?

I had my logic board replaced too. Last night I opened iTunes and same thing happened to me, it asked me to authorize this comp, I wondered why. Maybe the new logic board gives off a different id or something

Yep, each logic board has it own unique ID. Unfortunately, you’re supposed to deauthorize your computer before you take it into the store. They don’t tell you that enough. They should’ve had the tech de-authorize it as well.
