I was going to throw mine in the oven originally but wasn't sure what it'd do to the plastics on the ram slots.

Did you cover any sections of the mobo in foil?

Once my hairdrier fix gives up I'll go for the oven I think.

I only covered the ports (DVI, NIC, USB and etc) on the side with foil. Other then that, I left everything else exposed. Nothing should really melt unless you over baked the logic board or didn't pre-heat the oven.

Heres a link to the YouTube video I followed. It should be straight forward for everyone.

Its the Canadian Football League, Roberts was one of the best, if not the best Running back to ever play for them.

Still not me, but now I know why people always stare at me in Winnipeg (no they don't... but then again never been there...)

Sick video!!!! Bookmarked for when my time comes, I have a 15 and a 17 inch with the dreaded nvidia...
How long did it take you, from start to finish??

Oh, that's annoying. They should give 90 days warranty on repairs, or is that only if you pay for it? I would bring it in immediately.

Apple does have 90 day warranty on repairs, at least that's what the Apple Care personnel told me when I inquired about the upcoming repair of my MBPs Super Drive. My AC is good until the 13th of this month.

It took me about 1 1/2 hours from start to finish. This wasn't my first time taking apart the keyboard but it was my first time removing the logic board. Took more time to reassemble because I didn't organize the screws so I had to retrace my steps and verify it lol.

Burn in with MKV 720P videos for 2 days and so far so good. MBP is holding up fine and runs a lot cooler with fresh shin-etsu thermal compound.

I brought in my computer on the 89th day after my motherboard replacement due to another problem with it (not graphics related). They allowed it.

Macbook had some weird behaviour whilst watching an HD youtube video last night, video froze but nor artifacts and mouse pointer could still move.
Restarted and worked fine afterwards to watch the same video, but... It was enough excuse to take it apart again.

Motherboard in the oven for 7-8 minutes and back together again. (Decided to go back to the SSD whilst it was in bits again)

Fresh install of Lion on now. I see similar results as macxsilence, the thing seems to run a good few degrees cooler now. Not sure why there'd be such a difference. I'm using the same AS5 I always do...

I had my logic board replaced recently in my 15" MBP (Early 2008).

When I took it to the Apple Store, they could not boot the machine so they couldn't specifically diagnose the Nvidia issue with their testing drive. If they fixed the logic board in-store, they said it would cost about $700 and I would risk not being covered by the Nvidia warranty. They quoted me a $310 flat rate repair for all damaged components and shipped it out-of-state. I decided on the $310 repair.

I got it back and indeed, the logic board needed to be replaced due to the Nvidia issue. But they also decided my optical drive and speakers needed replacing, so they switched those out too. Because of that, they said I wouldn't be covered by the extended Nvidia warranty.

I'm slightly disappointed to have missed out on a free repair, but $310 for a logic board, optical drive, and speakers isn't too terrible and hopefully I can squeeze another year out of it.

Did Apple provide any type of warranty with the $310 repair

I did not read through the whole thread but I nearly had a similar experience with a Thinkpad. Fortunately I lucked out since I got the last machine of the line when they had changed the MB.

However I have now got a Mac Mini 2011 and it runs pretty hot too. Am running windows and have resorted to manually changing the minimum fan speed and also to lowering the minimum CPU speed. replaced the internal HDD to an SSD and now temperatures are a lot more palatable.

Some of my old Thinkpad laptops are still running strong after 9 years. Have received some new batteries though.

Bad GPU take 2.

I had the logic board in my MBP back in June 2011. The replacement is starting to show the same symptoms. Time to call Apple again :-(. I hope they cover another replacement, as I cannot afford a new laptop right now.

Ok, so I guess I'm about to join the club?

Today I got my early 2008 MBP back from Apple because the screen had a couple of dead pixels and the battery kept saying "Service Battery." Since my MBP is still under AppleCare, they replaced both for free, which is quite awesome.

I'm selling this MBP real soon, so just to be on the safe side I ran the Apple Hardware Test. It came up with 1 error, which reported there was a problem with "4VDC/1/40000003 Video Controller".

So is this the infamous Nvidia 8600m GT issue, i.e. my graphic card is about to fail? So far it hasn't exhibited any issues, except that upon restart it takes MBP a while after the chime to show the Apple logo. Fortunately I still have 5 days till my AppleCare expires, so I'll take my MBP in again tomorrow. Well, if it's the Nvidia GPU problem, I'm covered for 4 years anyway, so I shouldn't worry, right?

WOW! This thread is still going strong! I'm already on my 2nd replacement since my 2007 MBP graphics card crapped out on me (had a 2010 and now a 2011 i7).

Replacement MBP

Those of you who got a replacement, exactly what did you say?

Because Apple just took my MBP back in for a bad NVIDIA replacement MLB.

This will be my second replacement main logic board for my early 2008. EVERY component except for the display, (which is going bad, too) will have been replaced multiple times.

We're talking RAM, HD, SuperDrive, MLB, Top Case. EVERYTHING. This is really starting to make me angry.

What's covered under this $310 flat rate repair? They already took it, but can I bring up the other stuff, too? Like my display backlight goes in and out after travel, my backlight on my keyboard is out, the speakers on the top case cut in and out and the keyboard/trackpad freeze 3-4 times a day. The keyboard issues started after the last MLB replacement, which is why I went in.

I left the Apple Store with a bad taste in my mouth today, because I am without my main form of communication with my family for Christmas. I am typing on an old linux box I just managed to get up and running in the past hour. I wanted to be able to see my nephews open the Christmas presents I sent them and I won't be able to do that now.

I remember reading this thread soon after buying my MBP in 2008 and now I'm thinking I should have upgraded when I still had a decent enough job (I work for a charity).

I am so angry. Every other MB I've bought and given away to family STILL work. It just this one.

I know how you feel. This was my first ever Mac so you can imagine my thoughts on learning that they were all likely to fail... So far one logic board down with the NVidia issue and just holding out to see how long I can go with the second. I just hope it is a rare issue, other people I know seem to have kept their macs for years, (especially the powerbooks).

I know exactly how you feel, it can even get worse still. I really had everything replaced in the SR 2007 MBP, including the screen ;)

Moreover, now the connector from the keyboard to the logic board has given out on me as well due to also well-known heat issues. No more trackpad and keyboard for me for now (takes ages to order one out of the US)....

Yet can't complain about the service, with the exception of the connector cable (for which they demand € 190,- for repairs while the cable costs $ 24,90 in the US) everything else has been fixed free of charge, even outside of warranty.

Eh, I've had to carry this MBP back as dead weight from the Congo. Superdrive's gave out on me when I was in Burma when my only personal entertainment was a a season of 30 Rock. I've held my tongue at every instance of this lemon computer crapping out at inconvenient moment because I didn't want to be That Guy at the Genius Bar.

I paid $2800 for this thing. I would have been better off with a series of disposable PC laptops for the amount of inconvenience this thing's caused.

Hey, maybe someone can help me. Just came back from the apple store. The genius gave me the "if i can't run the diagnostic, I can't authenticate the nvidia issue"
Anyone who has been through the same have any advice as to what I should tell them? I know some of you have gotten around this same issue so maybe there is still hope?

Yes all you need to do is start the machine. Then wait a minute or two and try to turn on the caps lock function. If that lites up then tell them that its clearly a display issue and it's not the box itself. If it doesn't lite up then you might have a bigger issue that isn't covered.

Poor choice of words, "i can't authenticate" implies that you may have the nvidia problem. That is likely not the case.

If the machine doesn't boot enough for them to run the test, the NVIDIA issue is not what's causing the machine to not boot. just a fact.

Dead early 2008 MBP, machine didn't start at all, no warranty. Genius couldn't run the diagnosis, couldn't say what was wrong. Genius offered me a $310 flat rate repair, I accepted.
A few days later, the machine returns. Repair report says they replaced the logic board due to a faulty Nvidia GPU, and the cost was $0.

Your experience may vary, there's also a small chance that you actually have a different problem.

I sold my early 2008 15" MBP a couple of weeks ago. Extended Applecare ran out the end of October and when I figured out what I could sell it for now vs. a year from now I listed it on CraigsList.

The MBP didn't get used much its first year and was lightly used since then, so it was in mint condition. But the GPU issue was worrisome and I prefer the 13" anyway. I think that considering the condition and the price paid ($900 including an essentially unused Waterfield Designs sleeve case) the buyer got a very good deal.

And since I was able to get a 13" MBP for $900 during Amazon's Kindle Special Offers sale I am a Happy Camper. :D

I've replaced the Logic Board of my MBP Santa Rosa from 2007 twice during the first year of ownership. Are you saying that it will likely fail again? This is a bit worrysome since I'm now out of warranty. I must say that the computer has worked flawlessly during the last three tears.

Perhaps it's time to sell it soon?
