How long do I have to wait before registering for Applecare?

Gosh, I really hope this error has been fixed by now...

Then again, it would somewhat make sense that it might be a Rev A problem, wouldn't it?

Every now and then when I wake up computer from sleep mode, everything has a blue tint (similar, if not identical to the color mode "ColorMatch RGB") until I open up the Display preferences in System Preferences, at which time it automatically corrects itself without any changes being performed. Is this characteristic of a failing GPU?

Thanks,
Jason

Just wondering, but when exactly was it that you purchased your MBP?
Around the time the Penryn chips came out, or recently?

It was before I started college, so around July.

Of this year or last year? I'm going to assume last year, since I don't think the college year has started yet...
Anyways, wasn't that around the time of another Rev. A generation f MBPs? Maybe the GPU ISN'T your problem. =/

Sorry about that. You were right, it was July of last year. So my laptop isn't one the affected versions? Oh, also my laptop has started to exhibit a slight "pulsing" noise in the upper left corner. Could this be related? Thanks again, and if this is thread jacking, I'd be more than happy to start another thread.

Thanks,
Jason

They've sold 8600M GTs since June of last year, so yes.

i dont think this is no, i have the same problem and i've heard of others with this problem. it doesnt always happen, but every now and then when coming back from screen saver or sleep, the color profile is all gashed up and the screen looks washed out.

usually flicking the screen saver back on and then off (i use hot corners) fixes it, or going to the display window in preferences does the trick.

i think thats really just a case of drivers/software not doing their job and not an issue with faulty hardware.

faulty hardware is typically either completely dead screen and no signal on the DVI out, or wierd glitch like occurances like green blocks in video or flickering patterns. odd checkerboard style patterns appearing on screen are classic symptoms of a failing/over stressed GPU and more often than not these are related to heat.

most guys who's dabbled in video card overclocking will know exactly what im talking about. its the sign that your pushing too far.

to your other Q's

well rumour is all 8600GT's found in mobile computers have this defective substrate/material so potentially that includes every single MBP made using those chips (so from around june 2007 basically when they first came out). its a bit sensationalist to say all MBPs are doomed, but until official word comes out.... it could be that every single 8600M chip ever made has the potential to fail early.

the pulsating noise generally comes from hard drives or other rotating parts... perhaps a fan has become unbalanced or something

well this sucks, my MBP is on the way and im worried now.. i guess i still have this year for them to fix them and i can purchase apple care at the end of my one year warranty.. but kind of like with the iphone price drop apple responded to it, so maybe they will do something like that..

That helps. Thanks a lot. How do you recommend I fix the pulsating issue? I've got AppleCare, but I'm not entirely sure that they'd fix such a frivolous issue.

Has there been any confirmation at all as to when, if ever, Nvidia stopped producing/selling the bad GPUs, and if they notified companies like Apple early on? In other words, when were PC makers notified of the problem and did they then take immediate measures to minimise the damage?

Apple needs to make an official statement quickly. Either the chips are defective or they are not. If they're not defective, you'd think that APple would be quick to issue a statement saying that everything is fine. I assume their silence means that there is a problem.

quickly has come and gone, they need to make a statement now to save face!!!!!

Bitching around the forum wouldn't help much at all. I'd suggest take it to your local Apple customer service relations and scream about it, and provide proper evidence (read: links) on your claims.

The whole point of this post and this forum in general are for people to go and express their concerns, if our "bitching" is bothering you then please dont comment on the thread and leave. All I'm asking for is the assurance that if and when it breaks it will get replaced and I don't have to fork over $$$$$.$$ to get it fixed. M$ fessed up with the 360 problem, fixed them out of warranty b/c it was a major hardware failure, same situation here. Apple ignoring the problem is not helping at all, there product is far from perfect regardless of how much they like to play like it is. All apple has to do is be a big boy and take responsibility.

and for those who might say its not apple problems its nvidia's. while this is true i bought a apple computer, from apple, not a nvidia video card from apple, so its apple's problem.

b/c unless im mistaken and please correct me if im wrong, but nvidia said its just a matter of time before all cards go bad. kinda like m$ said with the 360 failures, but you are correct right now there are just a few reports, but 2 years down the road ........

like i said i might be wrong but i believe nvidia said its a defect on all cards (85xx and 86x) and eventually most if not all will fail.

until then, apple doesnt have to do anything.

just like with PowerMac G5s and their leaking cooling systems.

which they are still replacing even if out of warranty.

so much FUD going around.

did you read the first page? or this link http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/07/09/nvidia-g84-g86-bad ?

and your right apple doesnt have to do anything but since apple prides itself ( or used to ) on taking care of the customer, this is something some have come to expect from this company. If they dont say anything its going to leave alot of pissed of users in a few years.

and to make it clear im not bashing apple, but i am wanting them to take a stance, let the consumer know whats going on. if this was dell or sony then the fan boys would be bashing saying how they dont care about their customers but since its apple i guess its ok ........

I had no idea there was such a huge thread on this issue....

I have a mid-2007 MBP that started showing blank screens on wake from sleep. Since it's often attached to an external monitor, I thought it was just a compatibility issue. However, recently I've noticed the my games were getting very sluggish so I ran the Apple Hardware Test, which showed I had a "video controller" error. If you guys are experiencing similar problems, I'd suggest running this test and seeing if you have similar results. I'm going to be contacting Apple about this tomorrow... I'm glad I caught it before anything major happened (at least now I have the chance to back everything up).

<rant>The sad thing is I was hoping to avoid buying AppleCare...but due to this issue I think I'll be forced to buy it, as it appears to be a recurring problem and I'm already nearing the end of my 1 year warranty... So not only has Apple sold an inferior product, but they are forcing customers to pay them even MORE money to fix it! Since NVIDIA's GPU problems appear so widespread, they really should extend their warranty (at least on the GPUs), similar to what Microsoft did with the XBOX 360... Instead, Apple hasn't even bothered acknowledging the issue! Really, Apple has dropped the ball on this...I hope enough of us complain and force Apple to do something!</rant>

did you read the first page?

did you read what you typed?

like i said i might be wrong but i believe nvidia said its a defect on all cards (85xx and 86x) and eventually most if not all will fail.

just saying nvidia explicitly did not say anything about a 100 percent failure rate, now or in the future.

while this has not become PowerMac G5 severe, we will see in time. Pretty much every G5 w/ liquid cooling and a "bad power supply" has a leak. if GPUs start failing left and right then we'll probably see a response.

yes i read what i typed ..... was there a issue with what was typed? lets not make this a thread about me and you going back and forth. but i did state "eventually most if not all will fail." meaning maybe not 100%, but if all gpu were defective you have to fear the worse.

and to get to your point of "if GPUs start failing left and right then we'll probably see a response. " this will most likely not happen for another few years ( them rapidly failing ), by then the latest and greatest will be out and this issue will be all but forgotten about. so it will be " time to get a new laptop " instead of " oh yes bring that in and well fix it free of charge even though its out of warranty ". if apple doesnt take a stance on this, in a year or so when warranty's start to go out and gpu's start to go and apple has said nothing it will cost $$$$$$ to get fixed, even though this is a manufacture defect. if they dont fail all at once, and it is spread out which it is most likely to be, then apple will back their original claim of no problem, thats why i ( and others ) request apple take a stance now, so we know to sell, not purchase and wait for new gpu, buy 3-year apple care, or have the comfort to know that apple will fix this if it goes out. im not saying for apple give us all new laptops, but i would like a statement either way by apple on this. other manufactures already said they dont give a damn, i hope apple doesnt take this stance, but if they do atleast we know where we stand and what risk we are taking.

but like i said lets not make this a thread about me and you and us going at it, i have my stance and you have yours.

Have you read through all the threads related to the "faulty NVIDIA GPU" issue? There isn't any solid evidence of what action might be taken by Apple, rather it's all filled with people posting paranoid questions and comforting each other with conflicting answers.

I'm just saying, if you want some serious answers, serious questions to be answered, take it to Apple. Voice out all your concerns (over the phone, face to face) with a proper-level Apple staff (not some 'virtual Stevie' email address) if you want to see some action taken.

Two months of fumbling around the forum making posts haven't got me anywhere except finding out that I'm not the only one that's experiencing this issue. Instead, I've made a call to one of the higher-level Apple techs to try and sort out the issue (although still going nowhere) of graphic corruption.

FYI, we're not doing PMU-resets, SMC-resets or the usual tech support bullcrap. ;)

LOL and I can predict that eventually we will all die...
