LOL and I can predict that eventually we will all die...

you know what i meant no need to be a smart@$$.

As per the article I just read in the weekly Consumer Affairs.com newsletter, NVidida has admitted there is an issue with the GeForce 8M series of cards and will take a $150-$200 charge to replace them.

this is good news but we all know that 150-200 is 400-500 with apple, not complaining thats just the way it is.

gr8bob that is good advice but mine has yet to fail, so i dont have a leg to stand on. im just really concerned about the future, 1-2 years down the road. i understand what your saying and agree to a extent, but if i call the response will be " you dont have a problem so be quite ". and the reason i dont just wait and see if mine is defective is b/c i would hate to be stuck with a unusable 2000 computer in a year or so, if apple says there is no problem and they wont fix then ill probably sell this and get something else, but if they say they will fix it then i feel ok.

Actually Nvidia said they'd be spending $150 - $200 MILLION to fix the issues, they made no mention of a consumer price tag. But if you want to spend $200 to fix something that's within warranty, send $200 to me :)

As quoted in the article

Oh shucks...I guess my mbp was one in million...why couldn't it a been a lottery ticket instead.

Exactly, you can't just assume yours is faulty, unless your notebook do have serious issues then ask for a exchange as your right as a consumer at an apple store.

...and the problem depends on a combination of environmental conditions, configuration and usage model.

ie, it's attached to a high power CPU and sandwiched inside a case 1 inch thick with temp fluctuating between 50C to 90C. Hmm....

They should redesigned the logic board and separate the GPU and make it MXM.

IF Apple does take initiative to do something about it, it will be a big loss to Apple. I think they know about it, and trying to think of a way to resolve it before they come out saying their notebooks are affected too without a plan. So far the other companies like HP and Dell came out, but what plan do they have about the defective GPUs.

Ever again may be taking it a bit too far, let's just say it's in order to remain suspicious until nVidia owns up to their problem.
EDIT: And until after they release a non-faulty batch.

If Nvidia will be around to live through this.

Just as I expected:

"To make matters more laughable, the fix that NV is forcing on Dell, HP and everyone else does not fix the problem, it simply makes it less likely to occur during the warranty period."

This is what I was afraid of.

I hope they go bankrupt and gets taken over. Though I understand it's strategically correct to do what they do...I just have a personal hatred toward such companies.

Actually, quite a few Nvidia partners have lifetime warranties on their video cards.

eVGA, BFG, and XFX are three off the top of my head. I think my 8800GTS made by Zotac has a lifetime warranty if you register the video card with them.

I personally don't care. If something happens, I have a warranty for my new 8800GTS and for my laptop. I'll let it be their problem, not mine.

But the fact that you have to deal with this eventually and having to take your time to talk to them about the warranty and shipping the card back and having to wait to receive the new card is just a pain in the ass.

Also desktop card owners shouldnt have to nearly worry as much as the notebook owners if not at all because we can switch out the card anytime even to the stock ati cards or even better get the 3870. :D

It's no more of a hassle than when I had to get my screen replaced 3 times. Probably less of a hassle since I have a Apple Store.

As for the desktop video cards. I have an old 7900GT laying around. I won't suffer. ;)

Are you talking about the Mac Pro? Going from an 8800GTS to a 3870 is a downgrade, and a 4850 would be a much better use of money. ;)

I want to purchase my first Mac. Which will happen to be a macbook pro. But i will not buy one till this issue is resolved. Something needs to be fixed like NOW.

Read the comments of that Giz post, everyone knows that the Inq is FUD.

You treat the Inq articles as fact when they are anything but. They are nothing more than hear-say and guessing, with no hard evidence to back it up. Read the article.

You'll be surprised of how accurate the Inq can be. Their not 100% accurate on everything but at least the technology section has almost always been.

And its clear as day that Nvidia is making this issue less than what it really is. How would they not know which or what cards are defective? Wouldnt they just do some intensive testing to figure it out? Also wouldnt they know which exact parts that they are using in their manufacturing lineups?

And Nvidia not announcing which batch of 8xxx series are defective clearly shows that they dont want to announce that all 8xxx series are pretty much defective, because #1 that will be bad for Nvidia and its future, #2 would be bad for other OEM as well.

I wouldnt be surprised if all the OEM vendors knows that all the 8xxx series are defective and is just keeping quiet for the sake of their company as well.

I think this could mean serious trouble with Nvidia and maybe even go bankrupt from this in the next few years.

Not necessarily, going from the 8800gt to 3870 isnt that much of a downgrade really in gaming but in pro apps the 3870 is that much faster than the 8800gt. Especially the price and barefeats.com marked the 3870 as the all around best card for the mac pros. ;)

Not to mention Wow ran faster on the 3870 in osx as well.
