Can someone with the vertical stripes problem tell us if they sent their notebook to apple for a fix and it worked?

I'm considering buying a refurbished MacBook pro from the apple online store and I want to know if the graphics card will be fixed.

Has anyone experienced problems with the 8600 in refurbished units?

Jeff

miami racing...

refurbs will have the same logic boards as the old machines. a refurb may be a refurb for many reasons but none to my knowledge have any special, new nvidia cards. nvidia and apple have not been forthcoming with regard to the issue and it's impossible to know what is up. apple has said their machines have no problem but anecdotal evidence disputes that statement strongly. I would personally not buy a macpro without a full applecare warranty, in fact I have needed a new macpro for a while but will not buy one period, until a new video chip is announced or until Apple/nVidia publish a list of component serial numbers that can definitively state what machine have or don't have the serious graphics problems that are causing so many people to require motherboard swaps.

wel...for all of you bitching at me....
u guys may be right
but i will always be a gamer and will always be able to tell if something is choppy

So you think being a gamer means you have magic eyesight? You say "bitching at me", we say "prefer to deal with actual facts".

You might well be seeing choppy graphical playback. Your frame rate may well have dropped. I'd suggest that both are symptoms of another problem, as someone else has mentioned, and not the commonly reported GPU fault.

To try & link dropped frame rates to nVidia's "heat cycle" issues is absurd at best.

Just because you own a computer doesn't mean you know anything about them!

He probably saw the words "Video card", is having a problem with his video, and just linked the two.

To him I'm sure it makes a great deal of sense! LoL

****! I just came from class today, and saw that my MBP's display has a subtle green overlay!

Guess that's a symptom of the GPU failing. It had absolutely no problems in the year and 2 months I had the MBP, and BAM!

****. Thank God I bought AppleCare!

You definitely have a defective GPU. Call Apple or take it to the genius bar ASAP.

Not that it matters, but any GPU when it overheats will do that; doesn't mean it's failing. People think just 'cause there are artifacts that it means that the hardware is defective. It doesn't have to be the hardware, could be the heating mechanism.

I'm not saying this is not defective BTW, but it's just wrong to jump to conclusions like that so quickly.

Artifacts generally appear from overheating memory, but true.

well, i have an appt tmw at the genius bar, we'll see what they say, i'll bring my camera and show them the pictures. it occurred when i opened up my mbp after it had been in sleep for a while, so i don't think it was overheating. but in addition to this i have other problems such as this and a hdd that doesn't stop spinning when i shut down. hopefully they'll be able to help me out.

Well, I haven't had any problems yet, although the few times I've tried gaming on my 2.2Ghz MBP from July '07, it's been really hot. Anyway, I pulled a brain dead move and let my 1 year deadline to purchase extended apple care slip by while I was overseas, so I hope I don't get left in the dust.
Recall would definitely be a costly option for either company, but in the long term, nothing's more costly than hundreds of thousands or however many very disgruntled customers.
I could imagine them not going with recall though, and just doing the fix on any computers that show problems, rather than fixing everybody. It'd just be such a costly recall.

Whether the conspiracy theories (100% of all 8xxx GPUs & possibly 9xxx being faulty) are correct or not is besides the point. nVidia now has a MAJOR public relations disaster on its hands and needs to make things right. If Jack in the Box can get people to eat their after the e Coli mess then anythings possible.

Seems to be great optimism that 10.5.5 has fixed this issue - seems OK for me so far too, but I'm holding my breath as reboots have tended to temporarily fix the issue anyway.

And I'd still be interested to know for sure that the issue was unrelated to the nVidia issue, otherwise I'm not sure how a software update has fixed a hardware issue.

Time will tell I guess.

HP & Dell's solution was a patch that keeps the fan on 100% of the time (or at least increases the amount that it is on). Not exactly a longterm fix imo, more like a band-aid. Anyone know if 10.5.5 runs the fans more than they used to?

Just wonder if Apple has done something to mask the situation as well w/ this software update. The fact they haven't formally addressed the issue makes one wonder. They've addressed specific graphic bugs w/ this update, just not the big fish.

I was wondering if 10.5.5 perhaps underclocks the GPU and memory...

my MBP just failed on me last week too.. I bought it the 2nd week the SR MBPs came out, so I was comin up on 1 year and 3 months of ownership..

Apple completely denies that this is a common problem, and is treating everything as an isolated incident.. they reluctantly replaced my logic board (and for some reason it failed on me the next day, but now its working again.. kind of fishy)

it looks like the users who were the early adopters on the Santa Rosas are experiencing the problems right now, and it seems to be occurring a month or two after the standard warranty expires.. completely unacceptable.. I really don't know what to make of the problem, but I really hope Apple and nVidia address it..

Aww man. I'm in love with my MacBook Pro, and I really don't want the dang thing dying on me. My GPU works perfectly fine with Team Fortress 2 on BootCamp. Will it die? :(

I've had no trouble with my SR MBP (see signature). I play TF2, Call Of Duty 4, and just finished Bioshock on this baby and there is no sight of failure at all. It does get pretty hot though.

No slow downs after about 2 hours of TF2 or Call of Duty 4.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

It was bought in October of last year.
