Hey! I have an idea.

Instead of using sleep why not just simply shut down the whole computer?

I know it's pure convenience, but maybe shutting it down instead of using sleep would work a lot better.

Then again I'm not sure but that might work :-/

Shutting down and putting it to sleep is virtually the same thing. In sleep/shut down, the GPU has 0 power going to it, so temperatures fall. Turning the system back on put stress on the GPU because temperatures drastically increase. Thats what this problem is. A drastic fall and rise of temp on the GPU diode.

You must use and run InputRemapper in XP/Vista and their equivalent for OSX (smcFanControl). Alternate, you can run smcFanControl in OSX, then restart on XP (fan speed are keep between reboots).
Latest MBP dont' have a automatic fan control, so the fan speed is done via software (and its pretty faulty).

Also, there are different kind of nvidia drivers, ones can be more hot (and usually more fps) and other are more cold.

And to lose the warranty?.

I think sooner or later, several mbp will be return for warranty and Apple :apple: will try to void the warranty for every single detail.

Input Remapper creates havoc on my Vista x64. Furthermore, I'm not even running a fan control program in OSX. I've updated to the latest 64 bit nvidia drivers, it dropped maybe 1 deg C but nothing else.

Several, not all. I'm personally not losing any sleep over this.

Sorry for interrupting, can it be that this problem has something to do with the problems with this card?

Yes, that is what happens when the Nvidia Geforce 8600m GT dies. It seems to be a backup gpu card but it doesn't display through the screen.

The GMA X3100 is built into Intel's chipset that goes along with the CPU, but is disabled in the Macbook Pro. In the regular macbook, it is enabled and the computer runs directly from it, and on the Macbook Pro, the X3100 is not needed due to the extra, more powerful discrete chip to handle all the work, so it is hardware disabled. Guess it still works for network access though.

Apple REALLY needs to do something about this. I'm so glad they're allowing logic board replacements free of charge but what happens when someone's fails twice?

Knowing that, it would be really good to have a little app that would activate the GMA X3100 in an emergency, so you can get your stuff out, or do some urgent work before taking it for repair.

I stumbled across this issue by accident yesterday while checking out this forum, it's causing me to look at my investment with a bit of uneasiness. My partner and I opened a new 1500 sq. ft. photography studio back in March and I (after 6 yrs. of graphic design background using Macs) was able to convince him to make a switch to Apple from the the custom built PC he was using. He purchased a 24" iMac 3.06 GHz, and I the MBP.

On my MBP I run Aperture 2, PS CS3, and Noise Ninja everyday I'm not shooting, and work on file size enlargements up to a 1/2 GB (40 x 60 gallery wraps) with both monitors running 8+hours a day. After I updated to 10.5.5, I noticed Noise Ninja struggling with some larger files, then quitting. After multiple restarts, I was able to process the files, but this had never occurred before the update. Photoshop also couldn't save a 44 x 64 file with the compression I wanted, saying there was not enough RAM. Looking at the Activity Monitor showed around 1 GB 'Used:', well below the amount I have allocated for PS. I know it's been suggested that the update could be a software fix for the hardware problem (retarding performance to run cooler), but has anyone else noticed any performance issues in graphic intensive apps after updating?

BTW, sorry for the long post. I think the performance is still very good, but I'm not sure if I should install FCS 2 on my computer (we also subcontract videographers for event/weddings and do in-house editing). Any recommendations/experience appreciated.

Just an update.
My MBP repair status has said that a part is on order since the 26th. I'm going to assume this is a logic board, seems they should be in good supply under normal circumstances.
I haven't gotten a call from them about anything yet so maybe they'll replace it without the service charge. :crosses fingers:

Thanks for the accurate translation TS. ;)

If you had said "The dogs bollocks instead of just 'bollocks'" it would have meant something completely different again. :D

Oh, and my Macbook Pro would definitely fall within the range of bad Macbook Pros, if the rumours are true...

Bollocks.

I ran into this topic after sending in my MBP the third time for repairs within a 2 month timespan. I've only owned mine for a little over a year. I'm thinking I'm going to keep my MBP until new iMacs come out and switch over to a desktop and sell of my laptop. This is extremely frustrating that I'm getting this garbage after paying a premium. Luckily, I don't need major mobile computing anymore so a desktop switch will definitely be in order. So I'm guessing even after they "fix" my laptop.. it'll just be a matter of time before it happens again?

Well i got applecare for the next three years. I got my Macbook Pro in july when they were doing all the school discounts. That means according to the rumors i might or not have the bad chip. Its up in the air.

IDK what exactly is going to happen. If enough macbook pro's fail Apple could sue nVidia for damages assuming they aren't currently paying replacement costs for dead logic boards.

I think nVidia is hoping this doesn't blow up but right now i feel as though i should get a graphics card that won't fail within the next 3 years or so. I wouldn't not be happy if it fails the day after my applecare dries up.

This could be interesting to see what happens to nVidia. They make about 20% net income on their revenue but they are only a 5 billion dollar company. It wouldn't exactly be in their best interest to be replace millions of affected logic board.

Well if they don't handle this right they could fast be a 0 billion dollar company. This could seriously blow up in their face if they don't do the right thing. At best they'll still loose business because this is going to make clients very wary of their product for awhile. Reputation & word of mouth can be everything.

Yea. I have to seriously thank this thread. I'm making my transition to an iMac now. It might sound like I'm being paranoid.. but I don't want to wait for that once or twice a year where the chip will fail on me. It's not the cost issue right now because I have apple care, but its moreso the computer crashing when I need it the most (yea yea.. I know it happens to all computers, but I don't want it more frequent).

I just wish there was a permanent remedy.

I've noticed no problems after updating to 10.5.5 with my MBP (2008 model). I use Lightroom and CS3 with large panorama's and sort through imports of a few hundred RAW files at a time and whilst the notebook sometimes struggles it's just as stable as before.

FCS will run just fine on the MBP although you'll want 4GB RAM if you plan on running Aperture at the same time. If you're working on multiple 1080p streams the MBP will struggle though.

and btw. many congratulations on your new studio. Got a link? :)

I am sorry for asking, I cannot read the whole 32 page thread lol
So, I am about to receive a new Macbook Pro CTO soon from Apple, since it is recently built, am I affected by this bug?

FOREWARNING: Long post and not exactly related to thread. Sorry in advance.

It's probably either in my head or related to a few apps I've recently installed...

Thanks. I've got the RAM, but do I need to setup a RAID or firewire external HDD? Currently, aside from from the time capsule, I have 3 externals amounting to 1.05 TB, but they're all USB.

Thanks, I appreciate that. For now we're keeping my partner Tony's 'brand' intact, as he was more established than I in Naples. Which has served us very well so far, but he's looking to make an exit in about 5 yrs (being 15 years my senior) so things will be changing.
Our current website. BUT, I came across this photographer named David Jay on YouTube and was very impressed with the program/hosting solution he had developed and now markets (I am not affiliated in any way). This photographers site, is a great example of what you can do with the program. I'm currently working on a site using this system. BTW, do you have a link to examples of your work?

We're pretty much the only Wedding/Event photographers/videographers in town with a storefront/studio, which is a major plus for the clientele we market to. I know this doesn't belong in this thread, but I just gotta show our work in progress.

in response to matt's question

with regard to the question of photoshop usage, if you want to start a new thread, feel free to drop me an email kuenzli@gci.net and I'll be happy to chime in with thoughts on why those kinds of error notices appear but I don't want to further hijack this thread. I don't follow the forums here closely enough to ensure I'll see a new thread, hence the email request if you choose to start a thread.

I'm assuming that since I ordered my MBP on August 5th, that I got a "late July" batch.

I'm pretty sure Apple exhausted their batch of bad chips before switching over.

Think Different!

Or Not.
