macbook pro defect

Hi guys,

just yesterday, I was watching a video and browsing the net... I noticed some strange pink dots that were appearing all over the screen. I thought it might be a driver issue or something but then they quickly became more and more. The computer (at least the screen) froze. I hit reset and the pinkish dots were on the start screen as well. Then suddenly rectangular artifacts during bootscreen and then kernel panic. :(

The macbook pro was bought june 2007, 2,4GHz with the famous 8600mGT. I figured this might be the unfamous Nvidia bug and took it the the service center. They'll take a full 6 days to diagnose it since they're busy but I fear I might have to buy a new machine..... The reason:

All of the reports I've read so far indicate that with the official bug, the display just turns black but the computer boots up fine. Well, mine does not anymore. I figured it must be a graphics glitch since it looks like a graphic problem but I can't even boot the machine anymore (kernel panic).

What exactly did the problem look like for you (that had one and got it fixed for free?!?!) What do you guys think? If the GPU failed, did the system never stall?
Here is a pic of what it looked like before it crashed and was unable to boot ever since. For me it clearly looks like an electronic problem with the GPU or the video RAM!

I really fear they might try to talk their way out of it, claiming it is something else to make me pay another two grand and get a new machine, really afraid of that and pissed about the quality of that 1.5 year old machine.

They won't. They will notice that it IS the 8600M GT and go from there. It might not be "ok, we'll replace it for you" right away but the worse thing that will happen is they'll perform basic troubleshooting steps and if nothing works, then the repair is made. Apple isn't the company to run away from problems, if it's Apple's fault, they usually own up to it and takes care of it's customer.

I have a question, I had mine repaired in october 2008, long after the penryn mbps came out, is there a possibility I got one of those logic boards instead of a the previous santa rosa ones? I'd like to check if I got multitouch capabilities.

affected..........sorry

affect=verb effect=noun/adj (depending on form and context)

Like Tallest said, after a certain date the chips weren't defective.

I have a 4.1 MBP 2.5GHz with the 512V Ram GT.

I have it 3,5 months and as date o production says last week of October 08...

no issues till now but how can i know if my chip was after that date...?

ivnds your MBP is a SR right?

Yes it was, summer 07 SR.

whoa, that looks phuk'in bad. whats with the pink. were u watching something u shouldn't have?

nope.... pink pixels were accuring all over the place. AFAIK that happens when Video-RAM data gets corrupted. Then the laptop froze.

Im slightly pissed at this! I brought my MBP in August last year. Iv had no issues with it yet but it does run hot.

How can apple / Nvidia get away with not replacing the GPU (or even the whole laptop) at cost to them!

My brother brought a 4 year old car a few months back. now this car is a long way out of warrenty even tho he recieved a letter from Vauxhall informing him that when the car was made a number of them had defective Seat belts and his maybe one of them. They didnt know which ones had them so they replaced them all. The seat belt was replaced for free and that was the last of it!.

It stuns me that they can sell laptops with defective parts and when they know about the defects do nothing about it. Surely they should come up with some kind of extended warrenty for the machines just for this part. i.e if the GPU fails 3-4 years down the line due to this issue that its replaced!.

Im a huge apple Fan. I have always brought apple and would always recomend them to people even though you pay more for mac then you do anything else. Not anymore i think!

They will.

They already have.

Only an additional 12 months. Apple is not alone in this disregard for their customer's well being. Just wait until the first SR laptops start reaching 24 months and nvidia chips are still failing. If you think people are concerned and upset now, just wait!

My Powerbooks lasted for 6-7 years before I sold them. I'm selling my SR MBP 2.2 before it's too late (while my Applecare is still valid).

Cheers,

Sorry if I'm repeating something stated earlier, but I've searched this thread and others and haven't found an answer to this question.

Does anyone know what the "cut-off date" is for good vs. bad 8600 chips used by Apple? Is there a date beyond which all MBPs are known to have good chips? And where does the information about the cut-off date originates?

Thanks.

ya you cant replace the GPU its soldered to teh board, you have to replace the entire motherboard which has the CPU and everything else so its every expensive for NVidia. Its not a simple repair like replacing a seatbelt.
The board is pretty much the entire laptop.

For me apple just gave me a brand new MBP when I took mine in for repair. And they gave me a free upgrade to the high end 15.4" model.

can nobody confirm that the error with my MBP is or is not the problem that will be covered by apple? Does it look like anything you experienced when your book failed and was it covered?

I don't think anyone here can definitively confirm or deny the veracity of hardware or software issues you are having. You will need to take it to an Apple store or authorized service center or send it in. They have a process to determine if the problem is related to the nvidia 8600 issue. If it is determined to be related to that issue, it will be covered for 24 months.

Cheers,

I couldn't resist the Macmall offer and got the 15" Pro with the 8600 in it.
I'll be doing massive 3D work all the time so I'll post pretty soon how hard you can push it :)

I shut the lid again, waited for the computer to enter sleep and opened the lid, and everything was okay. Is this the beginning of graphics problems for me?
Could be, or it could only happen once. There is one time my MBP displays a horizontal distorted banding, put the machine to sleep and when I woke it up the banding disappeared and I never face that problem ever since.

But correct me if I'm wrong, ain't all MBP owners with faulty GPU is entitled for a free service? *lets hope they give you the new MBP :D

Apple needs to go back to ATI IMHO

+1 !!!!!!!!!

I have to carry around two laptops now because my SR 2.2 died. I ran Windows for games and OS X for work. I guess the games killed it :)

Apple replaced the logic board and I sold it off. My backup MBP 2.16 has ATI x1600 but it's a bit slow for games and I do not want another nvidia based MBP so I passed on the Fall 2008 update. So now I'm waiting for Apple to wake up and off ATI GPUs in the MBP again.

Cheers,

The other day I opened my MBP from sleep to notice the colours all screwy and everything distorted. I snapped some pictures from my iPhone (please see below). The colours on the screen were different when I first opened the lid, and they changed like those in the picture after about 10 seconds.

I shut the lid again, waited for the computer to enter sleep and opened the lid, and everything was okay. Is this the beginning of graphics problems for me?

I am considering selling the machine and getting a new aluminium MacBook. It bothers me knowing that my machine is going to crap out in the near future. I have AppleCare, but it just bothers me waiting for it to happen. :(

P.S. The thing on the display is Safari 4 Beta on a page on Amazon. All the black in the Safari window should be white, so perhaps graphics card inverted the colours?

forgot to turn off your nocturne lol

I actually found out that they do refurbish the boards with a bad 8600m chip. They have a machine that actually removes the bad chips and can reinstall it.

I've replaced a handful of logic boards and it has been quite obvious that they've been used before (e.g dusty parts, dark spots over top of the CPU cores).

My favorite is getting a board from Apple that's DOA. It takes me two hours to disassemble and reassemble a Macbook Pro. It isn't pretty when it won't turn on. :-/
