I'm not sure if this was already mentioned, so I apologize for not reading the over 1,600 replies on this thread. Anyway, I got mine replaced about a month ago free of charge because the video went out. I asked the guy if they were going to replace it with the same one, and he replied "no". But since I was just excited that I did't have to pay(no applecare), I forgot to ask what the difference was.

I have a hunch its the excact same(a ticking time bomb). Does anyone know any additional info on this???

I know there are several people on this thread that have had their MLB's replaced more than once because of the 8600GT. There's another rumor that if your MLB was made after October 2008 it is OK, but I know there's people who've had failures with MLB's that were replaced AFTER October 2008 as well. Bottom line is, no one is immune if it has an 8600GT in it.

Build date is the key

Apple's say's it's the build date. They say if Oct. 2008 or later but of course that's when the new ones started being made. Mine is a build date for the last of the penryn units but I don't have any faith in the GPU.

When I called Apple I got some contradictory answers. It was all hogwash.

But we have three years and that's the best we can hope for as we're all doomed.

I had my video go out about 2 months ago and I got it repaired and have had overheating and video problems ever since. last week, I was not only getting random BSOD's (black screen of death) in both OSX and Windows but also was getting video distortion anytime the card was used. a few days later the upper left hand corner of my keyboard melted and I lost connectivity on all ports, wifi drops randomly, and the speaker sounds messed up on the left side. so its off for repair again! gotta love the 8600 which btw was never over heating, temps stayed in check the whole time, it was just the processor overheating that caused the melting problem.

Yeah, I agree...the whole "it's fine if it's built after October 2008" is a rumor and built on false info. October 2008 is when the uMBP's came out, with a different video card, so of course they're not affected. Apple is simply referring to when the computer was manufactured, not the MLB or video card. Because between May 07 and September 08 is when the affected MBP's were made.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Apple! I just got my MBP back from the service center today with not only the logic board replaced, but also the keyboard and top case replaced (I didn't even realize I had a keyboard problem, yet they claim I had inoperative keys). Woohoo! This is awesome considering the Genius first told me they couldn't fix it then talked to his manager and called me later saying they would.

I am really worried. I do have two of those Macbook Pros. One 17" bought July 2007 and one 15" bought in September 2008. I had heard of the issue long before I bought the second laptop and hoped that they had fixed the issue. Now it doesn't look like. I do have Apple Care for both and will sell them a month or so before Apple Care expires. I had hoped to keep those many more years. . .

SMC software update not showing up on MBP with motherboard replaced

Hello. I read that a SMC software update just came out. I went to Apple Software Update but cannot find it. I had the motherboard replaced last Fall due to the 8600mGT problem. Does that mean the SMC update only deals with issue(s) of motherboards made around May 2007?

P.S. Even the motherboard has been replaced, I still have video issues (blueish screen, washed out color, etc ) occasionally. Usually these can be fixed by rebooting the computer. I asked the guy at the Apple service center when the replaced motherboard was manufactured. He said that he does not know!? He should be able to find it out from the database. Are they trying to cover up something?

SMC Software update was applied to my Macbook Pro which has a "fixed" 8600m GT card.. the lowest speed the fans go now are 2400RPM whereas before it used to idle at 1600RPM. Looks like they're cranking up the fan speeds :(

How did you get the update? It does not show up on my computer. Does cranking up the fan speeds make the computer noiser?

Interesting... Over some time experimenting with SMCFanControl, and temp fluctuations during normal use with my SR MBP 2.2, I ended up setting the base speed at 2500rpm. It seems just about perfect as a idle speed, and I don't really notice the fan. It keeps the overall temps in a nice, cool range during basic non-intensive use (my current cpu temp is 109F, and my gpu diode temp is 127F) when web surfing and basic tasks like printing, running iTunes, Picasa and NeoOffice.

It's not a bad move on Apple's part to keep things a little cooler, but I'm not installing any update for the moment. When things work, don't muck about, I always heard. :)

Hmm, strange - my fans used to run at a base RPM of 2000 which is exactly where they are right now (after the SMC update). Did you use an additional program to reduce your base fan speed? Maybe the setting got replaced by the SMC update.

I use Lightroom in a dual display configuration together with a Full-HD 24'' TFT which usually pushes the GPU up to 75° Celsius and so far the update did not change much. However, it appears that the CPU (yes, "C") triggers the fans somewhat earlier. Maybe Apple is trying to avoid potential claims that high CPU temperatures are responsible for collaterally heating up the GPU - as far as I understand they are unloading a significant part of the replacement costs to NVIDIA so it would only be reasonable to close any potential backdoors.

Cheers,
Dembo

Interesting, my MBP3,1 hasn't changed using 2000rpm as base after the SMC update...

After the update my fans have stayed at 2000-rpm as before, but with the more CPU is use the higher the fans roll irrespective of temp, which of cause gradually rises with cpu use. Before update my fans wouldn't go any higher until 70 ish degress.

I just ran Software Update in the :apple: menu and it showed up. The higher fan speed does indeed make the computer noisier.

My fan speeds idle were 1600RPM before and after the motherboard replacement.

What makes me really wonder is why Apple and Nvidia new about the problem since at least July 2008 and why they still delivered machines that might have the problem in September 2008. From my perspective that is unacceptable.

Hmm I had a wierd checkerboard pattern freeze with my MBP. Then it worked fine until one day the screen went black on power up.

Applecare covered it and they replaced the logic board -- they also replaced the keyboard -- didn't tell them that I spilled some vodka orange dream on the keyboard :D

something is definitely up with this, and apple needs to do something to fix it, 3 years is not enough for the warranty, clearly its a defect that will fail eventually

i have a 2.2 ghz (summer 2007) MBP

last summer i had the LCD (vertical green line) / battery replaced (health was 20%) under apple warranty

this summer i had the logic board / sleep switch / dvd drive / top case all replaced under American Express extended warranty (otherwise 320 bucks)- my computer would not burn DVDs, sleep, or charge my battery

while i have not had a direct video problems, I bet these things are all interconnected - the logic boards are bad and are going to fail one way or anouther

it seems like there are a lot of people getting replaced logic boards on this forum lately

Thanks. I tried Software Update in the :apple: menu too but it does not show up. Maybe the updater detects the replacement motherboard...

I don't even care anymore...when it fails it fails and i'll get a replacement somehow. I don't plan on buying AppleCare for this thing...i'm already due for a display/topcase replacement anyway so its pretty much back to new again (had new MLB back in December). I'll also likely get a new battery since i'm already at 85% capacity with only 177 cycles.

Hence the only things that wouldn't have been replaced are the bottom case, HDD & Optical drive.

So i've decided to stop worrying

Lets just say I have Apple Care and additional failure coverage from my insurance company for when AC runs out. :D

What kind of coverage do you have for beyond AC? If it was cheap enough I might get it as I'd like to keep this laptop about 5 years, but I'm worried about needing a MLB just after 3 years. My previous iBook was part of an Apple extended warranty for MLB failure and it failed bout 2 months after the extended warranty ended...
