Yes. Apple will cover the nvidia/logic board issue for two years after your initial purchase. Applecare will cover all defects for three years after purchase.

It is ALWAYS advisable to get applecare on ANY apple product. Especially a portable. Period.

Im not sure to buy another applecare, after all for mbp, the applecare cost the same than a netbook and i think its worth to have a "backup notebook" just in case.

What kind of coverage do you have for beyond AC? If it was cheap enough I might get it as I'd like to keep this laptop about 5 years, but I'm worried about needing a MLB just after 3 years. My previous iBook was part of an Apple extended warranty for MLB failure and it failed bout 2 months after the extended warranty ended...

No Apple solution beyond 3 years, perhaps 3 party solutions are available.

Cheers,

Anybody ever try laptop insurance through your home owners insurance. I'm not sure if that covers repairs, but it does cover if you accidently drop your laptop in the pool.

It's pretty cheap, like $20 a year on my insurance.

if you are debating applecare here is a success story. I have had my Logic board replaced twice along with other components, got it back from repair 2 days ago with another, new issue, so I called up and im getting a new unibody 2.66 for free and having my applecare prorated and refunded which comes out to about $126 plus a new computer in exchange for my old one! not bad at all. I am a believer!

Some credit companies offers "double" warranty coverages. For example, I bought my computer on an Amex, so double the warranty would normally be 2 years, but with AppleCare it should make it 6. I really don't know if that's how it is as I don't keep my computers for that long.

It's an addition to my renters policy with USAA that covers things like me dropping the computer, spills on the computer, hardware failures, etc up to $3000 to repair or replace the system.

Very very nice setup as it goes on forever. lol I find it hard to believe they can even offer stuff like that but I guess since I pay forever....

Does it really cover wear and tear/mechanical failures? I'm curious because it would sort of be like a replacement plan more than an insurance policy. Things will always break down else we would all be using color macs straight from the box with no maintainence (even tho one of mine still work ;) ). My statefarm policy doesn't cover wear and tear, but everything else.

I'm only going by what the agent told me on the phone and what I could decipher from the insurance garble they call my policy. lol

Yes they do. I have had two Mac replacements from USAA for other reasons, but was explained that just wear and tear or a computer that just dies qualifies. I was like wow. But, its some extra coverage you gotta get so you don't have to pay the deductible. All together i think I pay like 8 or 11 a month for it.... I bank, car insurance with them also.

I love USAA. One of the great benefits of my joining the military.

i bought a referb 15"mbp 2.2 in early 2008

About 15 months later I had the black screen issue which was confirmed by the Apple store as the 8600 card and a replacement logic board would be required which would take 5-7 days

After 7 days i went into the Apple store to find out the status of repair and apparently the tech guy dealing with my problem wasn't around but would call me later in the day, which he never did. On the 10th day i rang them and they said additional parts were on order and due in the next day. I got a call from the tech guy the following day all apologetic for the length of time but they are having problems and as it has taken longer than the 7 days quoted they would like to offer me a replacement model which would be the brand new equivalent, would i be happy with that!!

He then started to go into why they were struggling, something to do with when they replaced the logic board it blew something to do with the screen and when they replaced that part it blew the logic board and rather than keep repairing the issue a new model was a better option, would it be ok if they keep the display box!!!

As you can imagine I was jumping up and down by this point with excitement, especially as they failed to notice I had spilt a pint of water over it 12 months before!

They migrated everything over from my old machine and also transferred my remaining 20months or so applecare to the new machine

I feel like I have won the lottery

Well, just brought in my MBP for the 2nd time in three months...I'd love for my laptop to work perfectly and not have to worry about the gpu failing again after I get it back from repairs. I'm not getting my hopes up though.

When I went into the apple store, the "genius" seemed surprised that I was having this problem again. He noted that the last time I had my logic board replaced, it was with the 2nd revision board.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure it doesn't make a difference, and I believe this next one will fail as well. It's just a matter of time. I don't want it to die again because it's just more trouble for me to deal with, but from my own and others' past experiences, things aren't looking too good.

We'll see how it goes after I pick up my MBP again, and get a chance to play with it. What are the odds of them allowing me to upgrade to a newer MBP after my 3rd gpu failure? Until it's a fact that Apple and Nvidia have solved these problems and that new 8600s aren't going to suffer the same issues, I'd rather not have to keep going back just to have my logic board replaced with another faulty one that will fail again.

I bank and have insurance with USAA. You don't need to be in, or have relatives in the US military. You don't even need to be a US citizen (even though I became a US citizen a year ago...).

I posted a separate thread asking for advice, but figured I'd post in here anyway.

Took my MBP with no video to a local computer place as the nearest Apple store was two hours away. They ran a diagnostics test, determined it was a dead logic board. Would be over $800 to fix along with the $50 for diagnostics test. That sounds fishy to me, given that I have the exact same symptoms as everyone else on here.

Looks like I'll be making the trip to the Apple store to see if they determine that it's the video card and I can get mine repaired for free.

You can add another MBP 2.4 SR with a video problem. Screen went dark today and I checked using an external monitor with no luck.

Good thing I have AC and will be bringing it to a local Apple Service Center to have them look at it.

I'm sooo pissed...:(

I also buy almost everything with my AMEX and the warranty is doubled, for only for the limited warranty. It doesnt apply to extended warranties, which kinda sucks.

never joined the military, but gotta agree... USAA is the shît...

...my Dad, who was Navy, is with them, which is I guess why I get to be.

or as DoNoHarm pointed out, it doesn't matter.

FWIW, my mid-07 MBP is chugging along. For the record, I hope it stays that way, but if I got a new uMBP in the deal... maybe it wouldn't be so bad?

What are people's experience about getting a replacement UMBP? What's the best to get a replacement?

I'm worried that after I repair my MBP that the GPU will go out again... Such a horrible feeling living with this time bomb...

I know - and I have two of those 17" and 15". I will sell both 2 month before my AppleCare expires and get new ones.
