So I guess I can be added to the list as well :(
My screen went blank yesterday morning after waking it from sleep. Restarted, still black. Shipping it off to applecare this time, waiting for the fedex pick up as I'm typing this...

I'm trying the whole mail in repair this time because I've had several bad experiences at my Apple store. And I'm really scared that I wont get it fixed because I had a small spill a year ago, but it only got under 2 or 3 keys and I quickly cleaned that and everything was fine. sigh.

Ugh just been reading some of the replies here and it makes me nervous about my SR2.2Ghz MBP with 8600GT 128mb inside. Especially when in most cases the display seems to cut out without warning...

21 months old though and still going strong.. *knocks on wood* *again for luck*

Anyone else having a trouble free experience. Im feeling in the minority here :(

I've had my peryn MBP 2,4GHz for a year now and no problems. I have 3rd party insurance so I'll probably get a new one when this dies, but I don't want the glossy glassy wonder, and I don't want a 17 inch. I'll probably have to settle with the glossy 15 inch when that time comes.

Doesn't that laptop use a 9600M GT graphics card? Any problems with that card?

So I dropped off my MBP 2.4SR at a local ASC and they told me an interesting fact. Apple has to stock replacement parts for 7 years.

Do you think that the current batch of replacement 8600GT chips are still defective? Or would they have been fixed after the defect was uncovered?

Does anyone know?

My friend has a 8600GT that was replaced by a different 8600GT and it seems fine so far. Nvidia was made aware of the issue - therefore I'm somewhat confident they wouldn't continue selling a 'bad' chip.

I sold my MBP Classic. I miss it badly and will never forget it but it just wasn't practical for me...going forward. It was starting to become a wee bit too muc of a trouble maker, had done 5 repairs in less than 6 months plus that ticking time bomb.

I think the tipping point for me was when Apple disputed the AppleCare i got for it from ebay. I couldn't afford to get another full retail AppleCare and i wasn't ready to rely on Apple's 3 yr extension given how Apple likes to argue something else besides the GPU is wrong and also if anything else besides the GPU failed, which can happen evidenced by the last repair-display, you were SOL.

Anyway i decided to sell it and used the money towards a Unibody, i don't like the design but at least i have peace of mind now...even more so given the AppleCare that came with it for a fraction of the retail price

Wouldn't it be ironic if the 9600GT had the same manufacturing defect...well at least the 9400m would still work

WOW!! I don't wanna read this long long long thread. I might end up with a dead MBP! So far so good, no issues withmy machine yet.. and it's just over two years old now :) So how many people still have an working Santa Rosa MBP 2.2 with the nvdeath 8600m that works?

...besides me?

I have to say, since upgrading the firmware, the temperatures on mine have noticeably gone up!! At 2000rpm my poor machine heats up to around 65~70°C and that's with only FireFox open. What gives?? Anyone else noticed it?

I just got back my MBP from Apple. I found at least 2 huge scratches that weren't there before on the lid and a speck of dust off center of the screen that doesn't come off and it looks like a dead pixel, but isn't.
Great. This is the 3rd time I got screwed by Apple.

My 2.2 SR MBP still works fine... but I definitely avoided upgrading the firmware - if it ain't broke, don't fix it bit of wisdom seems to apply in this case.. my temps still run nice and low for the most part, but I have my default idle fan idle speed set to 2500rpm.

I don't want to jinx you but I had mine for about that long before the video crapped out on me. I wish you the best of luck... seriously.

Mine was 23 months when it failed, barely 2 years old. I hope yours doesn't. Best of luck.

Mine died last fall and I sold it as soon as it was back from the shop. I had Applecare until Aug 2010 but I advised the buyer about the problem and sold it cheap ($875). I'm very happy with this new uMBP. :)

Cheers,

Anyone think a poll would be a good idea to gauge how widespread this problem is?

I have a SR MBP with an nvidia 8600, and it:

A. Hasn't given me any problems, at least not the video card.

B. I have had to take mine in once, and it appears to be fixed.

C. Mine has been repaired more than once.

It's not scientific, but it may provide some insight.

Apple repaired my 2 year old MBP 2.2GHz laptop last week and it runs great now. I did not have Apple Care. They also replaced my worn out battery and an I/O component which could just be their terminology for the logic board. I am happy as heck, time to sell it so I can get the new MBP :apple:

Mine is still running strong, however I am starting to stress my GPU/CPU a little more so I am just waiting for this thing to die at this point.

I've had one for nearly two years now...a 15 inch SR MBP. No graphics failures......

I had mine for almost 2 years until the video card failed. I just got it back from apple care and they replaced the logic board. the crappy thing is that they replaced it with the same model! the 8600M GT. I hope it doesn't again.

They gave me the same one as well. I hope it doesn't crap out on me again

So GREAT! Almost exactly one year since my logic board was replaced for a faulty gpu, my mbp exhibiting the sleep/wake issue once again! So as far as I'm concerned these gpu's have a 1 year lifespan. Really pathetic. I am waiting till I get a distorted mess on the screen before going to Apple. What a waist of my f#@$ing time!:mad::mad:
