I really don't understand why everyone is so offended. Order it online and enjoy it next week...

well, they announced this macbook, not iPhone, not mac pro which is made in us, A MONTH ago, and says it starts shipping today. and now, only till now, we realize that we will have to wait probably another week.
they can simply push off the announcement or speed up the production, the extra is frustrating.

If something is shipping on a certain date, then wouldn't expect to receive it several days later? Shipping is not instantaneous.

It's a damn week...not the apocalypse...

3-4 weeks for BTO models and 3-4 weeks (even for base models) for every country but the US.

of course its not apocalypse, even if apple is gone its not apocalypse.

the thing is usually when apple announce some new macs, it's available immediately after it starts shipping. or it will have overnight shipping. so people are expecting the same.

when things doesn't meet people's expectation, people get disappointed. and people starts complaining.

Nah, I think they've protected their loyal customers. They never said in store availability today. They said available for shipping today. This way, loyal customers can order online and have first dibs on available stock. They don't have to worry about long lines and squatters poaching all the stock. It's better... It's the way they'll do it from here on.

Wow, that really is an alternative opinion.

True, they never said specifically that the MacBook would be available for in store purchase from the 10th of April but that was the general tone of the message.

Even if you don't agree with that proposition they clearly said that it would be available for shipping from the 10th of April, without stipulating that this applied ONLY to the USA. Misleading at best. Lie at worst.

I'm afraid that your suggestion that they are protecting their most loyal customers is questionable to say the least. Apple, as you Americans might say, have 'dropped the ball' on this one.

In my opinion, you are doing all of their customers a disservice to try to spin it any other way.

The timing is not so clear. Here's the text from the press release Apple issued:

Pricing & Availability
The all-new MacBook will begin shipping Friday, April 10 through the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

Apple doesn't ship "through" its retail stores. I will stipulate that it's badly worded and ambiguous, but most people who read that would understand it to mean that on April 10th they could order online or buy one in an Apple retail store and select Authorized Resellers.

Outside the US, I understand frustration, sure. But even BTO...that always takes longer. I'm not sure why people expected to get their hands on one right away.

Totally. But we all knew they were going to start approaching these launches differently to avoid the chaos. And tbh, making people order and be patient instead of clogging their stores and sleeping on the sidewalk makes for a much cleaner company image.

I mean, I wish I could have walked into the store today and picked one up. But waiting a bit longer really isn't a huge deal. I understand frustration/annoyance at not getting a new toy right away. But getting over-worked and calling Apple greedy/liars/etc. is a bit extreme.

I love it how worked up people get over little details.

Let's take a step back. Apple said the MacBook would be available today, which it is. The words "available" and "shipping" can mean many things. And that's precisely why they were vague about it.

They never said that your device will be at an x point with the shipping carrier or that you will be able to walk into your local Apple store and pick up the MacBook on launch day.

People love to misinterpret things. The word "shipping" can have many different meanings. Creating a label is technically shipping, even if the device is not physically with the carrier.

BTO has usually been 1-3 business days...3-5 at most.

What is the point of this? Have there ever been queues for a Mac product of any kind? Not that I can recall.

When has this ever happened for a Mac product?
It may just indicate a new overall direction for product launches. Emphasis on online ordering first, shipping to home or business addresses. Soon after, in-store availability will open up. If that became a consistent pattern for product launches, it'd reduce crowds, poachers, campers, etc... A new head of Retail Marketing may have a new plan. Good for her.
No need for the stores then ;).....

Q-6
Hardly. Store availability will simply follow an initial wave of online ordering. This may be designed to free up crowding from the store experience, which Apple may not like so much, at least to the degree it's grown to in recent years.
the most loyal customers are those who rush to store at 10am or whenever the store opens, just to get hands on their products a day or even hours earlier.
Now the earliest that early adopters can get their hands on a new product is the date it's delivered to their homes. So what? It's just a revamped delivery and release model. It's just new, and so you don't like it. People hate change because they get their hearts set on something going a certain way. Whatever. Apple has never let that be a major determining factor in how they do things. Otherwise we'd still have Serial Ports and FireWire.

Yep. It's just my opinion. I respect yours too. I just don't think Apple necessarily screwed anything up so much as they refined their way of releasing new products. Apple is always refining, and their decisions aren't always popular. I happen to think this was a deliberate move, and I applaud it. If I'm wrong, so be it. If I'm right, we'll all get used to it soon enough, like we have other changes they've made throughout the years. Or, if people are really upset, they can always head to the Microsoft Store instead.

no, it's not a matter of people don't like change. what i don't like is the waiting, and extra waiting.
when 5k iMac first announced, it was available to ship in stores immediately. and i was very happy to order one online and wait a week for delivery. but this time, it first say it will be available to ship in a month, and after this whole month's waiting, we find out that there is another extra week. that is what i hate the most.
I'm happy with shipping, i don't like the month's wait but i can live with it, but i hate that after one month's wait, we have to wait an extra week that we did not expected.

It's all relative, isn't it? So,with one product they announced closer to the release. With another they announced further from the release. It's just that some people are impatient after the announcement and don't want to wait. That doesn't mean it's a fundamentally bad way of doing things. It means Apple is trying to refine supply/demand based releases in the most efficient way. And it means people should just learn some patience. Often times new products are announced far in advance of their actual release. Cars, movies, jewelry, all kinds of things we have to wait for. But we're instant-gratification freaks and hate waiting... lol... It does us good to be a bit patient in this culture.

well, maybe apple just released a product when they are not fully ready.

plus, what angla said in the memo is "we wanna cut the line, so people don't have to wait, they know exactly when their product will arrive". but the reality is just opposite. we don't know when we will get our product for this whole month, and it still ended up waiting.

and indeed, we are used to wait for movies jewelrys, but remember, we are not used to wait for a macbook for such long. plus, when we've already waited for a month, we expected to be available in large quantities.

Why in the heck would I order a $1,300 product without first taking the opportunity to check it out in person?

Isn't having a demo unit that you can touch and see with your own eyes one of the whole points of having a brick-and-mortar store?

Wow. Now even base models say 3-4 weeks in the US.

Wow. I just chose a base space gray model and selected in store pickup for April 22, though shipping estimated home delivery on April 20-22. Was the 3-4 weeks for a gold base model?

Maybe there is a big driver issue they need to put in a software update that they are scrambling to finish in the next day or so.
