Seeing as AT&T has given us upgrade eligibility, I will probably end up signing for another two years and buying the new one for the contract price. Figure I'll either see my White 3G or just give it to a family member...

What do you mean they've given us upgrade eligibility? My account says upgrade eligibility after 5/11/2010.
They let the original iPhone upgrade to the iPhone 3G because the original iPhone was $400 and unsubsidized.

So what's the rationale behind people buying these phones.. Is it really there just naive to the fact that a brand new one will be announced... Or is there some lucrative underground demand for old iphone parts?

If you buy one on ebay you don't have to sign a 2 year contract with AT&T. I'm waiting until after I get my new one to sell my old one. When the 3G came out, the original iPhone was still selling for >$300 on ebay.

I cannot part with my 3G

I can't stand the idea of selling mine and waiting. If I sold it now what would I do until the new one is released? My iPhone is on all the time and it is always by my side. I am usually streaming music or listening to the iPod.

Nope, can't do it.

I've got my pristine (literally, it is flawless. Even got a whole new display via Apple a week ago) iPhone 3G 8GB, and I want to wait till we all find out AT&T's plan for us 3G users, and what the price for us will be.

Do you think I'd still be able to get ~$350 after the new iPhone is announced and prices are set?

yes, If I remember correctly, the price the original iPhone was going for did not change really at all when the 3G was announced. The whole reason people are buying them on eBay is that they want to Avoid AT&T and/or a 2 year contract.

I'm basically in the same predicament, except mine isn't "pristine." There is some wear and tear just from being in a silicone case (but if you keep a case on it, the phone is perfect). I basically want to keep my phone for almost as long as I can because the only other phone I have that I can pop my sim card into was dropped into a sink full of water and tends to shut off when it pleases (hence why I opted to pay full price for my 3G).

What do you guys think a good asking price is? I'm not expecting a boat load of money because I have enough to pay full price again for the phone (with extended contract: 399/499 like last year hopefully) but would something around $200-250 be reasonable? After checking craigslist lately for my area, there have been no iPhones listed, so maybe people will jump on it... or maybe not.

Lemme tell you something i'm doing it right now and it's not easy..Got my been thru hell and back Nokia 6126 and my even older and more crappified first gen 2 gig nano to help pass the time lol... I did the same thing last summer as well... I just figured that as soon as the new one is announced the market for the 3g drops significantly.. But according to u guys that's not the case.. Well what can u do.. I saw one rumor that said we might see a new Iphone as of monday!.. So as of now i'm grasping on to that gem of hope ever so tightly :(

wow some really nice prices. I will sell mine on monday after knowing what will happen. i would be content with $350 for a 16GB and i will throw in a belkin leather case. no scratches or anything. i can try for more, but again i will see how monday plays out

I got $550.00 for my Black 16GB a couple of days ago. I checked closed auction prices prior to listing and they were going for 500-600 at the time so I listed mine with a "buy it now" price of $550.00. It didn't take long to sell.

Was it used?

Was it used?

Yes, it was used but not very old. It also had AppleCare and I threw in some cases. Looks like used ones are still going in the 500 range and new are going for around 700(for 16GB). I also sold my 8GB last month for 400. The prices were much lower then. It's always a good idea to check completed listings before adding a buy it now. If you offer a buy it now for around the average closing price it will probably sell quickly.

If anyone else is planning to sell your iPhone on eBay I would caution you to add buyer requirements to your account before listing. You can eliminate those with unpaid strikes, out of country bidders, and zero feedback. I've been a seller for 10 years and this is the only category I've ever had any real difficulty with buyers and absolutely hate selling cell phones.

Im thinking of Doing 450. My phone is in pristine condition. Its had a bodyguardz plastic wrap thing on it forever.

omg you guys are so lucky.. people paying $500+ for a phone I got for $326? that's mad good! you basically have the new iPhone paid for, plus accessories.

i really want to sell mine for a good amount too.

ima a total newbie at selling on ebay, is that a option one can select while putting an item up for sale?

Yes, it is under the "Other things you would like your buyers to know" section of your create your listing page(just click change buyer requirements near the bottom of the page). Or you can follow the instructions at http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/buyer-requirements.html. Since you are new I would also advise that if you are accepting Paypal don't ship to any address other than the Paypal verified address. If anyone request that you do it's best that you refuse. You may get request to end the item early and sell outside of eBay which is also a very bad idea. If you are in the US and mailing via USPS get delivery confirmation for your own protection. It's the only way you can protect yourself if you do get a fraudulent buyer.

are these prices all for unlocked phones or just standard issue att iphone 3gs?

Can't speak for anyone else but standard issue never unlocked never jailbroken in my case. Unlocked phones tend to go for about 100 more than a locked phone.
