I acquired OS 3.0 GM from a certain source, no need for a dev account just worked. My device is an iPod Touch 1st generation and 3.0 is snappy and quick, unlike 2.0 release. Here are some screenshots... Any questions?

After I DL the files, how to i select them with itunes? they seem greyed out?

On Mac, option-click on restore in iTunes (Windows is shift click) and select firmware file.. make sure it has the ipsw extension, it oftens turns to zip when downloaded.

On my "source", it says this Apple warning “By installing iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed on Authorized Test Devices, these will be “locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored. You Must know that before installing the software.”
Download iPhone OS 3.0 GM 7A341 today here you go:
Warning: Use at your own Risk.
Is this true:confused:

Did the same and installed on my iPhone 3G without a dev account. Works fantastic and love the landscape keyboard across all of these apps! It's really quick... Also, willing to answer any questions.

No warning of the sort, worked as if it were another iPhone 2.2... release. No difference.

Post

Just edited my original post with a link to a video.

Anyway, I'm off to bed, it's getting late. If you have any questions or comments, I'll read them in the morning ;) have fun with 3.0!

I'm using it as well. Really happy with it. Everything seems to be working just like it should, except Visual Voicemail. Fortunately, the phone is the app I use the least.

The Safari improvements are surprising. Not just 'feels snappier', it actually is. :D

Just installed 3.0 onto my 3G iPhone. Impressed so far, it certainly seems "snappy". The MMS is nice, voice recorder good, spotlight is excellent, landscape keyboard long overdue and much appreciate, copy and paste is AT LONG LAST here, movies on the itunes store could get expensive.

Overall it seems like a very nice upgrade indeed. I was hoping that it would help me get over the urge to get a 3GS but the camera on the 3GS, video, speed bump and increased storage are pulling me in. The video and camera are the biggies for me, especially now with mms and youtube sharing it could open up a whole new experience.

The install of 3.0 was smooth as silk btw, no issues at all.

Apps

Closing an app is also much smoother, it doesn't just zoom away, it fades as well.. more visually appealing.

I got this same Gold Master from a developer friend last night, and it does seem to me to run better (read as faster) than my 2.2.1. This could be a placebo effect or the fact that I'm just excited to have the 3.0 OS prior to official release date, but so far, I have experienced no substancial bugs. My only "issue" is that the iPod application doesn't seem to "force quit" by holding the home button. From observing things, this release seems to be a lot better at memory management than my 2.2.1 install was, as I use the app FreeMemory to guage my memory usage. With Safari, iPod, and the standard always running processes, my free memory stays near 20Mb, where as with 2.2.1 and the same apps running, it would drop well below 10Mb free. I love the copy/paste feature (excellent implementation), and the landscape text entry input feature throughout the OS is great. The YouTube app does allow you to login and view your favorites and subscriptions as well. So far, I think this OS may well keep me satisified and able to resist the urge to upgrade to the 3GS, as it really adds everything I want to the 3G. Unless the 3GS is a huge amount faster (with the proposed faster processor/increase in memory), I don't see me upgrading until the next iPhone revision.

I just purchased a movie over iTunes, farley fast download with the 3.0 GM. Also the popup controls (pause, play, chapters, audio) have changed to a cleaner crisper looking bubble

Just a quick question about installation: after installing 3.0, do you need to setup your iphone as if you are getting a new one and restore all settings from backup and need to copy music and everything back to it or it just retains all settings and will only update OS?

Thanks in advance

New little find:
Within iTunes under the iPhone "summary" tab is the option to "Encrypt iPhone Backup"... Thought it interesting.

Same as any other software update with the iPhone it retains all songs, mail, settings, apps, the lot. It just updates the OS.
