They will take it off. All you have to do is tell them, you don't want it, take it off.

They can't legally continue to charge you for it if you have asked them to remove it. Period.

Technically, they can since it's a mandatory feature with the iPhone and we can be fired if we remove it. It's in AT&T's contract with Apple, so I'm told by the big dogs.

Hm, I wouldn't :) I work for AT&T and I would never do that. Why? Because that's the same customer that comes back into my store two months later, "Why is my bill $900 dollars?"

I see stuff like that all the time with other phones. People don't want the data plan on their tilt because it has wifi, but sure enough, "Well, I accidently forgot I didn't have it and used it when I wasn't near wifi"

I guess it all depends on who you talk to, but really, it's a mandatory feature and, imho, if you can't afford the $30/month, you shouldn't have the iPhone.

Looks like you are the sole reason most people hate At&T customer service.

My guess, is that if I talked to you... i'd be asking for your supervisor, recording your name and employee id, and reporting you to the corporate offices right after I had already stopped by the better business website.

People like you, give low income At&t employee's a bad name.

Actually, they can't. It's not in At&t's contract with Apple..... it's in the "Apple purchase agreement". i KNOW, because i've read it.

and unlimited GPS :)

How nice of them to provide a service, unlimited gps at no additional cost.

Particularly when it has always been available for free within the united states anyway.

Btw, I don't work customer service, I work at a corporate store. Also, my manager would tell you the same thing I would. People hate CS either way because they blame us for their stupid mistakes. I see it everyday, whether it be internet or text message or minute overages.

Prime example.

Customer: My bill is $1000...why?!?!?

Me: Well looking at your bill it looks like you used were using the web when you didn't have it

C: I should have had the plan on there.

Me: Looks like you stopped in on X date and wanted it removed

C: Well you guys should have called me if I were using it so much.

So basically, customers want us to babysit them because they aren't responsible enough to handle themselves. AT&T knowing that this goes on daily, they were smart enough to make it mandatory.

To use GPS on the other phones such as BB or Tilt or whatever, it's an additional $10 feature.

Also, so you are telling me that in Apple's purchase agreement it's mandatory. Doesn't that prove my point about you having to have it?

EDGE will use the network thus charging unreal amount of PPU data.

I wouldn't ever take the data plan off an iphone because I don't want to forget that I don't have it when not in a WiFi area and end up with overages. Since the iPhone uses the actual web when browsing and a good deal of apps use data, you are going to hit overages total more than your $30 data plan in about 30 seconds.

That's just me of course.

:)

Actually no they block the data from coming in through any cell tower so I'm good ;)

It is, which is why I am slightly curious to how he got it removed. Although, I don't know what other carriers' terms are outside of the US.

It is NOT required if ask AT&T :) its not in their memo, and you can use me as a reference if you need to.

Wow. If you can't afford the data plan then you simply can't afford the iPhone. It's spending like this that causes depressions.

Thats a pretty narrow comment.

One can save up 199, maybe it takes them 4 months. Good, they have a iPhone, but the bill is a bit much, after all it took them 4 months to get 199, so they don't quite have enough for the data plan each month. But they like the iPhone, its a cheaper touch with a cell phone and SMS built in....cuts down on what they have to carry around.

Why not let them use it as that?

(those details can change from story to story, but over all I think my point is valid)

????? No. I've had all the phones you just listed, and NEVER paid extra for that "feature". So, explain why with just a bare bones MINUTES ONLY plan I was able to use the gps on my tilt. It was a new contract, and never ahd it on there.

Waiting....

At&t rips people off with their "billing cycle" issues. They have major problems with removing charges and people getting partial months for things that don't even make sense.

You can still use it without the feature, you are just on PPU. Just like if you don't have texting, you can still text.

No. It's a "purchase" agreement. This has nothing to do with At&t's SERVICE agreement.

Apple has no legal right to my phone once I have purchased it from them. At most, if they found out I wasn't using a data plan, they could cancel my warranty.

<--- I went to law school.

Well i got absolutely no additional charges, even for pay per use, from At&t when I had that setup. You're wrong about that one my friend.

GPS does not cost money. UNLESS, you are paying for the service from at&t to use it with the external gps unit for certain phones.

Phones that have gps built in, do not need this.... as long as gps is unlocked and able to be used on the phone... which it is on the tilt.

Some phones do have it locked, and require the external adapter and the feature.... but a lot do not (such as the tilt).

I hear that our CS sucks all the time, but whenever I talk to them they almost always removes charges or work with the customer in some way.

Although, just like any othe place, if you call into CS yelling, complaining, whining you will more than likely be held strictly to policy. On the other hand, if you call in with a level, open mind and willing to be worked with, people are willing to bend and stretch a little more.

You can call me and I'll be more than happy to explain your bill to you and anything the doesn't make sense to you. :)

Then you my friend, are a unique case. I've seen people come in with PPU charges from the Telenav from AT&T a few times before.

;)

well you guys do block the data so there is no overage charges correct? I only use wifi connections

i don't understand why people tend to get so worked up about this issue when it comes up...

"you're an idiot if you have an iphone without data, blah blah blah"

if i had regular access to wireless at all the places that i spend most of my time at i wouldn't want to pay for it either.
i honestly don't see what that's such a stupid thing.....

That's one of the stupidest things i've ever read.

If you can't afford the data plan, then you can't afford the phone?

Well, what if the phone only costs $60 per month, and his budget for a phone is $70 per month. He could clearly afford the phone, but he could not afford the additional $30 for a data plan.

You sir, need some basic math skills.

well considering that most people wouldn't be allowed to drop the data plan, and the OP bought the phone with the data plan then that makes him/her a poor decision maker. I would use a stronger phrase, but I don't want to have my post removed.

as for your hypothetical situation that's not the case now is it?

You just said it, TELENAV! The at&t does not use Telenav. It has it's own gps built in. You can install any other gps software made for that phone, and rock out for free. Example, you could install a tomtom mobile gps software onto the phone, with maps included, and receive no charges for data, because there is nothing to download.

GPS DOES NOT COST MONEY IN THE UNITED STATES. IT ALSO DOES NOT USE DATA or NEED IT ENABLED.

GPS, IS GPS, IS GPS, IS IT'S OWN THING.

Hope I was able to explain it.

GPS, is free.... what At&t is charging 10 bucks for is telenav. Telenav has to download the maps peice by peice each and everytime you move, where other software already has the maps on screen and ready. Telenav is a total rip-off. That's why you saw people with pay per use charges, because telenav had to use data to download the maps.

The tilt, has a working gps, and if you install the maps, theres nothing to download. I'm not a "rare or unique" situation...... i'm one of about 500,000 people who are smart enough to just not pay At&t for something that was included for free.

By using telenav, in any way shape or form, you're screwing yourself over. With, or without a data plan.

Thanks for playing, go say something dimwitted somewhere else.

Are you speaking english? You wrote a lot of words, but said nothing.

The GPS included on the PDA's is telenav. Installing other GPS are, indeed, free. What I was talking about were the services AT&T provides (which is telenav).

No thanks. I'm sure i'd just have to call back a few more times after speaking with you to get whatever was changed fixed. Then i'm sure i'd have to call a few more times, just to get through after being disconnected by someone, then i KNOW i'd have to write a letter and complain to someone high up just to get it straightened out in the end, only to find that they have absolutely no idea who was originally in the account or what was wrong.

No thanks.

Unfortunately, the very low paid AT&T customer service reps (in store, or call center) feel the need to come onto these forums and spread their all un-knowing knowledge around. It all boils down to people giving wrong information over and over again.

You CAN remove it, regardless of what anyone on here says.

It's really a shame that people actually feel the way you do towards CS or Reps.

I actually get things taken care of as quickly as possible. Why? Because customers like to know they can have their issues taken care of correctly and in a timely manner. When they feel that they have had a good experience, they will then return to me when it's time to buy something. Since I work on commission that's a good thing and makes me try a bit harder to solve customer issues. If others would have the same mentality, it would be win win

Maybe... except even you didn't know about the GPS thing. So if each member of your organization is on a different page, how can the public be expected to have faith in your company to resolve their problems?

Fix the training needs of At&t's customer service / support and you will have no competition.

I'm not a customer service rep either, I'm in sales. What it comes down to is the person you talk to. Talk to me, anyone in my store or even city, and you won't be getting that data packaged removed. Some people exercise poor ethics all the time, which is nothing new.

I knew the GPS thing. I was talking about AT&T's service because, well, we were talking about AT&T service before.

It's not the training or anything like that. Everyone has the ability to be on the same page if they listen. Most don't because customers are rude and don't want to work with them to solve their issues. Could also be people doing unethical things for personal gain, which is probably the number one issue. It's also because customers don't want to take responsibility for their actions and say AT&T sucks because we won't fix an error we told them would happen in the beginning.

http://www.neowin.net/news/main/07/11/16/att-silently-adds-option-to-remove-iphone-data-plan

Apparently At&t added the option to remove the data plan. Apparently you can also do it yourself.

We are talking about the 3G data plan buddy.

You could remove the old one like 2 months after it launched. If you have online account management, you could do it yourself.
