You can't remove it via OAM with the 3G plan, I know because I just logged on to try :p

I don't see what the big deal is with taking off the data plan. It really does make sense for some people.

Tell me about it. I'd probably give one of my parents my old one if you could do that. I think a lot of people don't understand that out of 300 million people in the United States, there is more than one set of uses for a smartphone. What if you just wanted an iPod with a built-in phone so you didn't have to carry two devices? That was enough for me. I like all the Internet-enabled features, but I really don't use them a ton outside of WiFi areas.

So to back up your point, knock it off with the "what's the point?" nonsense about people who don't want data on an iPhone. I guarantee you there's a person somewhere who bought a PlayStation 3 just to use as a Blu-ray Disc player and has no games for it. When both are $400, why the heck not?

Glad we are back on topic, and that story was posted when the first iPhone came out, so it's not that uncommon to take of the data plan.
Read the iPhone contract, this has been discussed over and over. Even if you removed the data plan many times, the fact that you are still using an IMEI number that is iPhone, they will keep adding the data plan back on. AT&T is not stupid, and yes data plan is REQUIRED for iPhone 3G.

And yes, they can legally do it, read your contract.

Then the rep wouldn't have done it then right? another user did this and they haven't added it back

You CAN remove it with the old iPhone. It gives you the option to do it via online account management or by calling into CS. It's not recommended for reasons I have said earlier in the post.

With the iPhone 3G, it IS required. No if, and, or buts about it.

Read the part of the contract I just copy and paste. If today you are NOT using an iPhone 3G, yes you will be able to get away with it. But you ARE using an iPhone 3G with IMEI, which means they can track you using it. It'll be matter of time before they add the data plan back on, and it would be the same when you remove it again.

I was switching from 3G and first gen, and AT&T actually locked me onto the first gen data plan on their own. I had to call in to switch it back on 3G.

Oh jimmy you know so little of me hahaha 2 of my best friends are gay but not as nearly bitter as you are

Come now. I'm bitter because I say you're spending money in a not so wise manner?
Just because your friends are gay doesn't mean your remarks aren't homophobic. Hell, my mom says ridiculous antigay things all the time, just because I'm her son doesn't mean what she says isn't offensive.

rsk137 sounds like another brainwashed att drone
I've been using the iphone with NO DATA PLAN for about a month now and on my phone its says 0 data sent or received and on my bill it says the same thing, when i try to open safari it just says not connected to the internet. Att will gladly remove the data plan for you if you wanted to. You can even just add the media max plan for 15 bucks and use that just fine you just wouldnt have the visual voicemail though.
