Nope.
I have this problem at my home, but when I am out for work, it does not happen in stronger signal areas. If it was solely a hardware issue, it would happen no matter where you are.

I tend to agree. I'm working in a small town right now (no 3g here) with a VERY strong signal at my hotel. My 3GS was rock solid and now my iP4, at this location is too. No matter how hard I try I can't get it to drop signal.

When I go about 5 miles to where I'm working, inside, the signal still shows a nice strong 5 bars BUT putting my hand over the antenna drops me to 1 or 0 bars.

I think I might be in an area where there are two towers pulling at my phone for signal?

Regardless, I agree. Software.

I really expected some sort of statement today, if not a software update. With the mainstream media ALL over this story Apple is taking a big hit to its reputation.

Of course, the issue might be a severe one that takes the engineers awhile to sort out. In that case, Apple's rep will continue to take hits. (Maybe they'll spend more time testing the iPhone 5 before releasing it to the broad, scrutinizing public.)

I absolutely love the design of the phone but form > function is a dangerous path for Apple to continue taking.

form > function is the path apple has always taken, that is part of their appeal

as for having a statement, i'm sure their PR/Marketing people know what they're doing

I brought my laptop with me today anticipating one. But yeah, seems a lot like the iPad wifi situation...

I just talked to an Apple Senior Supervisor and they told me that there are no plans to make any changes until they get 150,000 returns. Not exchanges mind you, but if they do not see at least 150,000 returns with requests for refunds in the first 24 days, they will consider it below the threshold to take action and thus nothing will be done.

If they do cross 150,000 returns, then they will issue a statement and a plan of attack to implement over the next 90-120 days.

so all of you go return your phones. that way when white comes out it will be alllll fixed!

That's crap..... they better be working on the known problems:

1. antenna reception
2. wifi not staying connected (802.11n and g)

Waiting for returned phones and THEN coming up with a plan is why Apple gets a bad wrap.

I am really starting to think I have exceptionally bad reception issues with my phone. Like there is something wrong that other people don't have. I literally cannot touch my phone without calls cutting and data dropping off. It doesn't matter where on the phone I touch it.

The only remedy I have found is to reset network settings, then it works until I pick it up again. I am going to call Apple tomorrow and demand a replacement. They have told me I have to wait until after a fix, but there is no way this many people would be saying their phones work fine if they even remotely had my experience with this phone so far.

i'm sorry i didn't realize you were an expert on on apple's engineering

there is no hardware flaw, they may be a design flaw (ie they could have picked a better place to put that gap or left the antenna internal) but the hardware is working fine. if there is a hardware flaw then no phones would work

now back on subject, the hardware is only as good as the software that is runs it. they coexist and depend on each other equally. you can have the best design and best hardware but if your software sucks then you're in the same boat.

it has already been shown that all cell phones exhibit this behavior on some level, a tweak in how the software interprets the signal could be enough to alleviate the dropped calls. we will find out soon enough when apple puts out its first patches

there are 3 primary factors at work here

hardware/software/location

so it isn't as simple as people are making it sound and it almost makes some of these types of issues almost impossible to test

Good point and I agree with this mostly. I don't understand why everyone is so quick to state that is a confirmed hardware issue. Especially with the statements about how the iPhone4 switches cellular frequencies by picking and choosing different bands (more so than before). I can see this being the reason it could be software.
It's not so much that I need the 4.01 update now. I just want to know if it's officially coming or not. Just let us know what's going on!!! Don't leak CEO comments that are cryptic at best ("There is no reception issue. Stay tuned.") I can't stand having this phone and not knowing if I am going to keep it. It's a horrible feeling. I would prob think more lax if they had not shown me how they are going to handle issues with the iPad and the wifi issue. I gave apple a lot of leeway thinking that they would quickly have an update. It's been 2 months now!!! And don't give this "change your router settings" crap. How is that a solution when you are in a public or work place, and don't have access to these routers. My iPhone on wifi has no problem, why is it the routers fault.

I can't give apple the benefit of the doubt this time. So until I get an answer, I have a phone that I don't know if I will be keeping. Pretty annoying to deal with as the statement-less days keep going by. I want to keep this phone. It's damn near perfect. I can deal with bad reception if I know it's the carrier's coverage, I can't deal with thinking that the phone is the weak link. Even if it is only in certain situations, I don't want to have to think about that with a $600 phone. Nor do I think we should have to

I just talked to the Apple Super Senior Mega Supervisor and he CONFIRMED it, (again... CONFIRMED) it that soon Apple will be releasing an iPhone 4f (f standing for FUNCTIONAL) in the next few days. Stay tuned for updates....

Honestly though, I really wish this was a simple software issue.

iPhone f

What does that mean? That everyone is going to exchange their phones for a new model?

What the ? Talk about making a vague "confirmed" non-statement.

welp. fanboys outweigh the realists so its a wrap. I'll be waiting for the i4GS next year then. I thank all the current i4 users in advance for their beta-testing.

So everyone is still having dropped calls? I know I got my ip4 last wed and did not have any problems with it. Then on Thursday I began to have a few dropped calls(2 of 6 calls that day) and Friday I had one but since then not single one has dropped. Any chance that with a few hundred thousand phones activating the same day plus all those people playing on the network a little more than usual attributed to some of these dropped calls. I have no call problems/reception issues since early Friday. Just a thought.

The problem is not really dropped calls, it's a problem with the phone getting a usable signal. That can mean problems with calls, texts and data connections.

The issue is also causing problems internationally, so it's not just AT&T.

There's never going to be a 4.01 update. It's going to be 4.0.1 or 4.1, but never 4.01.

Sounds a bit high, and it depends on what you mean by "returned".

Is that people who've totally given up and got a refund, or people who have got an exchange?

Refund. 50K isn't that much considering it's international too.

As far as I can tell, if you're on Edge then this problem can't be reproduced. I'm not familiar enough with the hardware to tell if this means anything, though.

Thanks bro, I think we know this. Sorry for being lazy. Thanks for contributing to the conversation.

No, I've lost data on edge holding the phone with my palm on the seam.

This place is amazing. I have never been on a forum were EVERYONE is an expert on every topic.

You guys really put the words pontificate and dogmatic to shame.
