Btw if your ordered on apple.com you have 14 days to return not 30 read the apple return policy and can only return it online for your money back but certain stores will allow you to return at store locations you have to call to verify before making the drive.

I have the white iPhone 5 and love it. However, I got a case before it arrived and it went straight from box to case. Not taking any chances with scratching. Waiting for some screen protectors. Had to order four so I hopefully can get ONE on without specks and bubbles.

So I went to the Apple store. I could have gone ahead with the exchange but after actually seeing the white one in person I decided not to.

I prefer the black one 100% over the white one so I'm sticking with it. I exchanged it with a brand new Black one and got a case right there so now I'm all set. :)

I just returned my black iPhone 5 at local apple store with no problem. I preordered online on sept 14.

I had been using it naked since launch day without any scuff. I returned it because I just don't like black color.

Shame you're not in UK. Everyone (except Apple according to its website anyway!!!) has 32GB and 64GB in stock.
I've just replaced my black with a white

I presume you mean carrier locked phones? There doesn't seem to be a great deal of unlocked sim free stock anywhere in the UK.

I saw it firsthand at the South Coast Plaza apple store display models so I can only speak from personal experience. Both the white and black looked like dog**** when they have scratches on the chamfer edges.

That sucks. I was recently at Fashion island and they looked pretty good. Sure looks like mid to late October before trying to buy.

No, you actually have 30 days for iPhones; quote from Apple's return policy page:

"You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it. For an Apple iPhone, you have 30 calendar days."

Wow, I just read on the website that iPhones purchased online were not eligible for return to the store. I wonder if they added that recently since so many people are trying to exchange for a different color. I was able to return mine without a problem.

You can in the US.

You can in the US.

From the Apple website (US):

Ship your item back to Apple

To ship your return item(s) to Apple, sign in to online Order Status with your Apple ID and password.

After you sign in, you will see the items on your most recent order. Locate the item you want to return and click the Return Items link. On the next page, select the item(s) you would like to return and click the Continue button.

Next, verify the return item(s) and the return address on your address label. Once you have verified your return details, click the Print Now button to print your address label and packing slip. Affix the address label to the outside of your return box. If you have multiple items to return, you may pack them in a single box with the packing slip. We recommend using the original packaging if you are returning a computer.

Bring your item to an Apple Store

You can always return the item(s) to any U.S. Apple Retail Store. An Apple Specialist will assist you with your return. Your refund will be processed at that time. To locate an Apple Store in your area, please refer to the Apple Retail Store Locator.

Note: An iPhone purchased on the Apple Online Store is ineligible for return to an Apple Retail Store.

Call Apple. They will tell you different regarding damaged/incorrect items, and I have done so in the past.

"Items ordered on the U.S. Apple Online Store that arrived damaged or are incorrect can be returned to any U.S. Apple Retail Store, or by contacting Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775."

He was talking about damage... so that falls under this clause. Technically an exchange. No exclusion of iPhones is mentioned in this case, and can be verified by calling Apple.

Also, he was really talking about exchange for a white one, in which case the entire policy from which the above excerpt was taken applies:

"Exchange an item

If you purchased your item from Apple in the U.S., you can take it to any U.S. Apple Retail Store for an exchange. Item exchanges are, of course, subject to in-store product availability. It's a good idea to check in-stock availability by calling the Apple Retail Store, or by going online and adding the item to your cart and seeing if the item is available locally. Personalized items and custom-configured Macs may not be eligible for exchange at an Apple Retail Store."

In any case, he is good to swap white for black at an Apple store regardless of if he bought it online or in a brick and mortar. The swap however is at the discretion of the store managers whom tend to be a bit cranky.

I still suggest just calling web sales and telling them you want white and they will send you one.
