I mean the 8+ has the same internals as the iPhone X just without the fancy new design so you still get the power and grunt without spending too much cash... all you probably "missed out" on was:
1) 2nd lens having OIS and larger aperture [f2.4 vs f2.8] tho i don't think it would be a major dealbreaker.
2) FaceID vs TouchID (again ymmv, both are fast enough for me I like both of them can adapt quickly without complaints)
are the top two things i would probably say. again an iPhone is still an iPhone... whether the two above are major game changing depends on the user alone. I would say photo aficionados would be sold af on the iPhone X, but then again from what I seen 8, 8+ and X's main camera all produce somewhat the same image so as long as you don't go into the zooming in you should be fine.
