Yeah, keep downvoting my posts, nobody cares. If you actually took half a second to look up the iPhone line, you'd know the order was:
1) iPhone
2) iPhone 3G
3) iPhone 3GS
4) iPhone 4
5) iPhone 4S

Why do people care so much about what name the next iPhone will have?

The list is correct, but we all should remember that the "S" models are just updates to the previous ones.

1. iPhone
2. iPhone 3G
3. iPhone 3Gs (the speed update)
4. iPhone 4
5. iPhone 4s (the speed update)
6. iPhone 5 or LTE (makes no sense to have an iPhone 6 regardless of whether it's the 6th phone or not. If it was the first iPhone would be called the iPhone 1, then we would've went to iPhone 2. It looks more like a coincidence that the iPhone 4 happened to be the fourth model. It's not like Apple could have just called it the iPhone - "still on 3G but with a newer design"

I agree with the others, I hope Apple just drops the numbers or just sticks with the 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s naming schema.

I just have spent £750 on wife's iPhone 4's and I don't want hear about any new iPhones coming out sooner than one year from now.

I'd just like to point out that the only time a number was used (with the iPhone 4), it was used accurately to describe the fourth-generation iPhone. I don't see them changing that.

But you're right to question why people care so much. In reality it doesn't matter until the product is released anyway - we'll all just call it whatever they decide to name it.

Agreed! And I can see them going 6 if they called this one the 5 and it would have all made sense then.

I don't mind the moderate discussion but members are starting to hurl insults and down rank over naming conventions that no one but Apple knows, and that's just plain ridiculous.

I phone 5

I do too. It's the Apple way.

People that complain it's too early, are those who spend too much time looking in the rear view mirror. The 4S proves what I've been saying for months, it's just a placeholder until Apple can sort out whatever they're struggling with to bring out a redesigned model with a modern size display. The tiny 3.5" that occupies that space now is way too small for today's use.

Only those who don't really need a full fledged smartphone like it. And while that's a large number, just because Apple can sell it, doesn't make it the best. Oh sure it's quite nice, but far from Apples best work. Time to get serious and dominate in _both_ sales AND performance.

Common Apple we _know_ you can do it.

That said what thrills me about the 4S, is the larger profit margin for Apple. This has already translated in an increase in my stock price, as well as saving me the hassle & money of actually buying one. By not being a phone that I find compelling it's made it easy to just skate by with my iP4, let others be the beta testers for some of the new features, while I get my money's worth out of iOS 4.3.x

That along with continuing to enjoy Snow Leopards speed, stability & refinement it's going to be a stress free year.

This is the very first year I've passed on a new iPhone and it's actually a nice feeling.

Let me be the first to add what I think the 5 will be judging by the patents issued. Multi plane 3d. And so will there upcoming OLED tv. No glasses.

won't the next iphone be the iphone 6?

1 = iPhone
2 = iPhone 3G
3 = iPhone 3GS
4 = iPhone 4
5 = iPhone 4S
6 = iPhone 5 or 6?

Maybe it'll be the iPhone 4GS >_>

and the next Mac OS X should be called Snow Lion. I'm sure of it

Hehehehe

I just have spent £750 on wife's iPhone 4's and I don't want hear about any new iPhones coming out sooner than one year from now.

Well, hopefully your wife has her own money.

Because it's inaccurate, it's based on poor understanding of the model history

Maybe you should write a book about it. "The Studies of iPhone Model History", and then the schools can start teaching it.

Seriously, who cares what it is called and what people think it will be called. Apple can call it the "iPhone Crap" and it will still be an iPhone that many people would buy.

I continually fail to understand why people don't get the fact that a redesign is wanted for two reasons only:
Larger screen.
Larger screen.

Along with the larger screen will come a more ergonomic rounded shape.

I guess that's three reasons.

Well then you're going to wait for a long time a long time a long time (see, I can be cute to :) ).

Oh, and if you'd like to have a civil discussion please let me know. I honestly would like to know what people want from the iPhone but I'd prefer it if you were civil.

I bet you the price of the next iPhone that the next iPhone is a redesign.

As said before, I won't bet either way. The only thing hinting at such a pattern is how the iPhone got a redesign after the 3GS last time. For all we know they could stop enumerating the version number in the name (which would negate the "need" for a redesign) and just start calling it iPhone like they have with the iPod line for the most part (or Macs...they all used to have new names each model). I think it is probably a bit soon to drop the number off the name but who knows. Apple killed the iPod mini after one revision. They've done weirder things.

So lets make the cave larger with a more wide open entrance! We'll call it Cave 5, no Cave 6! (Just joking around, btw.)

You know what!! In the day of the release, when I went on the apple site there was an image of a phone which was taken sideways. Then, that image was removed.
It was a thinner device with curved edges.

Only a day after the iPhone 4S launch and rumors of the next Apple iPhone have already started. CNet reports that it's actually Apple's next iPhone that will get a major redesign. Of course, we've heard that before.

Mockup based on previous rumors
CNet cites two sources for the news. First is a research note from analyst Ashok Kumar at Rodman & Renshaw. Kumar claims that Steve Jobs was intimately involved with the next iPhone from concept to final design. Kumar recites features that have been circulating previously, including a slimmer profile and larger screen size.

CNet, however, also has their own source who seems to have very similar information:Most have already expected that the next iPhone will be a case redesign. With the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple seems to have established a pattern for their releases. A new design (iPhone 3G, 4), and then one with internal improvements (3GS, 4S).

you guys should stop feeding the rumors by spreading ridiculous info

it was already an EPIC FAIL when you announced the iPhone 5

for sure, there will be a 5, then 6 and so on, but you should stop posting bs

Stop feeding the rumors? On a site called macrumors? That makes perfect sense.

You act like anyone but Apple knows which rumors are true and false. They're rumors for a reason. Go to a news site if you don't want to read rumors.

Here's what I don't get.. Is everyone really that anxious to have to replace all their peripherals because the new shape won't fit anymore?.. really? :confused:

I dont think so friend. What folks are excited for is a redesign.

Yeah, buying new accessories may be a drag...but many (including myself) were looking forward to an iPhone 5 that resembled the mock ups. Anyways, on your point: I cant use the GSM iPhone 4 case that I previously used...I had to buy a new CDMA Version/4S case anyways (and Im assuming many other AT&T customers are in a similar boat). Stay well friend

Seriously folks, this website is called Macrumors - the iPhone 4S is here and it was history the very second it was released. If you have just got a 4S and are upset by the any comment on future iPhones, this really isn't the site for you at the moment I am afraid. I am not commenting on the validity of any of the rumours, merely the fact that they will inevitably get posted as it is the modus operandi of the site. With the greatest respect, I am not sure that blaming the site or it's users will do any good.

Sure,.. and I would have bought a new case anyway, I get that.. What I was more concerned with are things like the dock for my home theater system and the Bose player, etc.. Safe journey, comrade :)

Yeah....
