because 4 comes after 3, and 5 comes after 4, and 6 comes after 5, and ......

One problem with your logic there. 4 came after the 3GS, not the 3, and 4S came after 4.

Apple has named exactly one phone after a number, and that was the 4, which not-so-coincidentally happened to be the fourth iPhone. Everything else has been either named after its predecessor, with an S, the network generation it uses (3G), or was the first one and had no designation.

If Apple releases the next iPhone with a number after it, the pattern dictates a 6, not a 5, and the phone after that would be expected to be called the 6S.

That is the established pattern.

The iPhone 6 is a good moniker for the next version, when talking about rumors, simply because no matter what it ends up being called (could be iPhone LTE, or something crazy like that), it still remains the sixth iPhone, just as calling the 4S before it was announced the iPhone 5 made a lot of sense.

When it comes out, we can call it whatever Apple wants to call it. Until then, calling the next one any number but iPhone 6 just makes you sound like you're unable to count.

For my money, I think Apple will want to redesign the phone, but find it difficult to do so. Not because Apple isn't capable, but because the usability experience is so good with the 4/4S design. The square shape makes it so easy to snap pictures with the volume button, try doing that with a rounded edge without the button being weirdly positioned or awkward. They might change the size of it, making it thinner, but personally I think they ought to try just letting it go one more generation so the battery life can increase even more. As for the screen size, I can see Apple making the case smaller to let that 3.5" screen go all the way to the edges, but Apple likes the screen size just the way it is because it fits well for most people's hands. Remember, Apple is all about the usability, not bumping specs just to bump specs.

These 4" curvy iPhone rumors will never stop, but if you really think about it, there are some really good design decisions built into the iPhone 4/4S case, and Apple won't change unless they can make something even better. These mock-ups don't cut it.

Doubt they will release it in June. iPhones will be released in the Fall now.

Spring - iPads
Fall - iPhones

That doesn't make sense, the iPhone 4 came out in June, Apple will not want those that have just finished their 2 year contract seduced by other manufacturers offerings. Apples marketing department will not have missed this point.

I don't think Apple is all that concerned about their customers being seduced away. iPhone customer retention rates are massive, every other company is jealous of them, and iPhones are breaking records every line refresh. When you're #1 in customer satisfaction, and have like double the retention rates as your competitors, you shouldn't get careless, but you can afford to pick your release times instead of being driven by the rest of the market. I think the iPhone coming out in fall works great, it comes before the holiday season, they'll sell like mad on Black Friday, and it's a good time to buy a new phone anyway as it's something nice you can play with while you're huddled up inside all winter, and something to show off for the rest of the school year on your highly portable tablet.

Then, in spring when you want to go outside and do some computing, the new iPads come out, letting you read an eBook on the beach or in a park.

And, by spreading the two out at opposite ends of the year, you keep your shareholders happy with huge profits year-round, and you don't have a logistical nightmare shipping massive quantities of both products too close together.

Oh God, here we go again. Didn't Apple say the redesigned "Tear-drop" iPhone would not be released for a very long time and, in fact, is just a prototype project?

However, iPad 3 is much more exciting. Apple officially said, before the release of iPad 2, a "major new iPad update" was coming. Shortly after the release of iPad 2, Apple said iPad 2 was NOT said update. So, iPad 3 is going to be better, do more stuff and be majorly updated. I've been looking into buying an iPad, but will wait till iPad 3.

I'm sorry, but you're talking crap. Your above ideas would dictate that the iPhone 3GS was the 4th iPhone. So why didn't they call iPhone 4, the iPhone 5? The next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5. iPhones with an 'S' after them are not considered a new number. They're considered a slight upgrade to the previous number. This month's release proves that apple will follow the same pattern, being, iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6, 6S.

Just redesign it and be done with what for for all intents and purposes looks like the Antennagate Special. Retaining the same glass shape and size for the 4S was pure profit driven greed.

We've had an iPhone
We've had an iPhone 3G
iphone 3GS
iphone 4
iphone 4S

Sooo, why would they jump to iPhone 6? The next one is an iPhone 5!!

It will mark an all new design, so i don't think they will use iPhone 4G.

However, i prefer the previous post of iPhone Air (thats what the mockup shows, a replication of the design philosophy of the macbook air.)

Apple will be keen to get back to an aluminium chassis (like the iPad), the dual antennae in the 4S might allow that to work without any signal loss. I hate the aluminium chasis, scratches too easily.

Still laughing at the PadFone though.......

Hey congratulations!
It only took 92 comments before someone mentioned that it looks like the iPod Touch!

Bet this rumor is simply a joke to see how many people take it seriously!!
I have to say, the mock-up, in white, is kinda cool looking!

The next generation iPhone will certainly not be bevelled. That was the 2G-3GS and proved a pain in the arse for cases and people who wanted screen protectors on the back of their devices. The next iPhone will be as radically different as the 4 was.

You're woefully misinformed if you think the 3GS was the 4th iPhone. It was the third. The 3G was the second phone, and the 3 in the name had nothing at all to do with its version number. And, if you think that S phones don't count, then the iPhone 4 should have been called the 3, by your logic. As I said, the people calling the next one 5 can't count.

i reckon this sucks

i reckon its a pretty sad state of affairs when you have people talking about the next iphone 3 days after the new one has come out. seriously get a life, bloody hell

I think they need to ditch the iPhone model numbers, and just make it "iPhone". The iPods change all the time, but they never have numbers by them, same with the computers.

For example, you could identify them by this if needed, but it's still marked as an "iPhone".

iPhone (late 2011) 4th gen
iPhone (mid 2012) 5th gen
iPhone (mid 2013) 6th gen

Way to use a dead man's name in order to gain credibility. I've had enough of this these "people in the know" and "trusted insiders". Yeah you've got an inside alright … on what's for dinner at your mother's house!

Would a new housing makes a difference?

What if Apple kept enlarged the iphone 4 housing design, basically, you got a bigger phone, would that be okay? It will look like iPhone 4 but bigger: bigger screen. Sure, this would give you a bigger screen. If they had gone with a new look of the housing, the internal changes would be same. iPhone 4s differs from iPhone 5 is the screen size.

Next year, the redesign housing will hold LTE 2.0, a6 quad core chip, 1 gig RAM, 64 gb storage, Siri 3.0, something new.

Yeah, keep downvoting my posts, nobody cares. If you actually took half a second to look up the iPhone line, you'd know the order was:
1) iPhone
2) iPhone 3G
3) iPhone 3GS
4) iPhone 4
5) iPhone 4S

There were no other iPhones, and no fewer iPhones. The only phone there named with a number is the iPhone 4, which was the fourth iPhone. The 3 in 3G and 3GS doesn't mean anything except that it's a phone capable of 3G speeds. The 4 in 4S simply means it's an upgraded 4, but has no indication of its order otherwise. The next iPhone will be the sixth iPhone, and thus, if it does get a number, would be expected to be called an iPhone 6. That's the only number that fits the pattern.

You people arguing, saying it'll be the iPhone 5 were probably the same ones complaining that the current one was named the iPhone 4S. You'll probably be so excited when the next one is called iPhone 6 because it's, like, skipped a whole generation of iPhone .

I can only think you're either ignorant of iPhone's model history (as some of you have clearly demonstrated thinking there was an extra phone before the 3G, or that the 4 was named with S-phones not being counted as separate models), or you're one of those people who think the iPhone 5 will come out next week.

Does it really matter? People will flock to buy next iPhone regardless of name, users just want the re-design. By the way, don't let the thumbs discourage you.

You'll be back in Febeuary when the iPad3 hysteria starts... and you know it.

Sorry, arn, but I have to say that further re-iteration of your "rendering" of the "iPhone 5" doesn't help :)

Does it really matter? People will flock to buy next iPhone regardless of name, users just want the re-design. By the way, don't let the thumbs discourage you.

Because it's inaccurate, it's based on poor understanding of the model history, and it only confuses the issue because people hear iPhone 5 and think, fifth iPhone, not the sixth one which will come out next year. It's also, absolutely, not going to be called the iPhone 5, so why start calling it by the wrong name now? It only encourages the editors of this rumor site to spread misnomers.

I already said I don't care about the thumbs, it's just kind of stupid that people are downvoting factual information. What I'm saying is true and easily verifiable. You may not like it (for whatever bizarre reason), but voting me down isn't going to change reality.
