So, why does everyone think they'll call it the iPhone 5, when in reality it's actually the 6th?

Because going from iPhone 4(S) to iPhone 5 makes more sense than going straight to iPhone 6? But, for all we know, they might completely change the naming (say, iPhone Pro).

...and the iPhone 6S will be an incremental upgrade...

And there'll be plenty of plebs to voice their opinion that they're not going to by the iPhone 5S because A: It looks the same and B: (Insert screen inches excuse here)

----------

I'm thinking it will be called the iPhone Plus or something... with a larger screen.

And keep the 4 and 4S for a while.

Why did they call it the 3G, when it was actually the 2nd (not including Rokor)?

These guys start the rumor and when it doesn't pan out they blame Apple! lol

Pathetic.

Only macrumors members here seem to think that. The vast majority of the population do not know or care which number phone it is. For them, they're going to wonder what happened to the iPhone 5.

Because it had 3G, the original only had Edge, the addition of 3G was a big deal at the time.

Thanks for the obvious answer.

Reality is, it's just a name. They can call it whatever they like.... is my point. the number doesn't have to equate to wherever apple believe the phone sits in the sequence of it's design. They've only done that once so far. Which makes that phone the anomaly.

Only a day after the iPhone 4S launch and rumors of the next Apple iPhone have already started.

CNet cites two sources for the news. First is a research note from analyst Ashok Kumar at Rodman & Renshaw. Kumar claims that Steve Jobs was intimately involved with the next iPhone from concept to final design. Kumar recites features that have been circulating previously, including a slimmer profile and larger screen size.

CNet, however, also has their own source who seems to have very similar information:Most have already expected that the next iPhone will be a case redesign. With the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple seems to have established a pattern for their releases. A new design (iPhone 3G, 4), and then one with internal improvements (3GS, 4S).

Good God. These analysts are as worthless as a cows dunk. Well even, that is useful for utilities such as biogas.
They basically know nothing and fart out contemplations while they sweat in the toilet.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I just hope the case size is more or less the same, with the screen taking up more space. I'd like to think that we'll never end up with a ridiculous, Android sized iPhone.

Apple isn't like the android OEM'S they aren't going to release a new phone so soon after the 4S so no worries here. Hope they do release in June/July again though.

Interesting . I queried Siri three times about iPhone 5.

Siri: everything you need to know about apple products is at the apple website .

Siri isn't talking either. :p

Exactly.

The original iPhone was called "the iPhone" and the 4th iPhone was called the "iPhone 4"

Other than those... the naming scheme hasn't exactly followed the number scheme. (3G, 3GS)

Which Mac Book Pro are we on now? :D

I have a feeling iPhone naming will change in the next generation. Think about it... Apple has just released its 5th iPhone.... but they will be making cell phones for the rest of our lives. The numbers gotta stop sometime!
