1. Well I'd assume so, the "S" being the incremental update, substantial as it was.
2. The 4S is selling great in spite of it, but I'm sure they're not eager to repeat the wave of disappointment and negative press surrounding the announcement of the S, which I think can be entirely attributed to the enclosure design and "4" designator.
3. I'm almost tempted to not check in for another 11 months.

Why the heck are we talking about the iPhone 5/6 (or whatever they'll call it)? I want to know if you think I should buy the iPhone 7 or wait for the iPhone 8? Or will the iPhone 7 really just be the 6s? Will the iPhone 8 be all that great and a case redesign? Don't forget that I'll also be buying the iPad 5.4 with iOS7 so my time and funds are limited so do you think this makes sense?

Wait a second, what are we talking about? Why don't I just sign my house over to Apple and let them tell me what I'm eligible for.

It's for sure Apple didn't start this rumor.

Maybe RIMM started this one to kill Christmas sales. Go for it RIMM. Already bought my 4s.

Keep hitting refresh on all your iPhone news sites because they'll give you the latest information on what they believe the next iPhones will look like at this very minute! And remember, you hate the iPhone 4S because it looks like an iPhone 4. Ignore the record breaking sales unless we run a story about the record breaking sales.

I just want to point out that the design for the 4S was locked in 9 months ago: https://www.macrumors.com/2011/01/05/next-generation-iphone-parts-caught-on-video/

And we can also take a guess that Steve would have wanted a hand in the design for the next iPhone, so it's not unreasonable to believe that the have a design already in mind even if it was a good 12-18 months out.

Agreed, I'm sure Apple knows pretty much what the next iPhone will look like (same for MacBooks, iMac, Mac Pro, etc...). I'm sure they also know the plans for additional features introduced in iOS 5.1 and even iOS 6 as well as the development of Siri and iCloud.

Flash!

Make it capable of running Flash, so I can actually see ALL websites, and I'll come back to iOS.

But for now, I'll be replacing my Nexus S with the Nexus Prime, which will have a 4.5"+ screen and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Probably be quicker to wait for the websites to transition to HTML5 than wait for Apple to move to Flash.

I can't believe people get paid to be "analysts". I bet every single person on this forum could do just as good of a job, if not a better job at being an analyst as some of these hacks that make random declarations about future products. What a joke profession.

This is such crappy journalism. If you predict the same thing time after time, you're bound to get it right eventually. Hell, half the members of MacRumors have a better track record at predicting this stuff than Cnet. It's getting embarrassing.

It has to make you wonder, qui bono?

"Steve Jobs wasn't involved much with the 4S, the iPhone you should really wait to buy is the forthcoming iPhone 5, that was SJ's opus, the one he really cared about, not like the throwaway 4S that looks the same as the iP4, anyway.”

says some random jackass named Harold and Kumar, or something. :)

There might be no iPhone 5

Yes, there might be no iPhone 5. Why?
2007 iPhone
2008 iPhone 3G (3G = supports 3G)
2009 iPhone 3GS (S = speed)
2010 iPhone 4 (4 = our 4th iPhone)
2011 iPhone 4S (S = Siri? speed? Steve? :)
2012 iPhone 4G? (it would be funny to see reactions :) iPhone LTE? iPhone 6 (6 = our 6th iPhone)
It would be fun, don't you think? :)

Blah, blah, and more blah. They know nothing about what the next phone is going to look like. I think the current design has some legs. I wouldn't mind another generation with the same design, then one can use the same bumper or case or any other accessory. I think I mentioned my expectations about the current phone in some older post, perhaps I just thought about it. Anyway, I was spot on pretty much. Same design, combined CDMA/GSM, better camera and more storage. I didn't know or think about Siri.

Ok, here goes my prediction for the next phone, it will be LTE, still world phone (this is mostly useful to Apple), we might go back to two models, 32 and 64GB. Probably same RAM, it might take another iteration to go to 1GB of RAM. Perhaps some minor improvements to the camera (I wouldn't expect anything big). I know nothing about bigger screen size, but I would assume that whatever they do they don't decrease pixel density, so that leaves few options. Last time I think it was easy, as I think it was double the pixels in each dimension. I think it will take quite a while to double that. So, two options, decrease pixel density (it won't be a retina display anymore) or double again (unlikely for a few years to come). My vote goes that the screen remains kind of the same, perhaps minor improvements on brightness, color, etc.

I am not expecting it to support GLONASS or any other satellite navigation system as it would be a big drain on battery. It would be good to know what Russia or China might do in terms of pressure to support their navigation systems.

That nearfield thingy looks actually far away.

Then there are the unknowns and the software improvements artificially tied to a hardware version like Siri. So, my main expectations are LTE and perhaps some software improvements tied to the new hardware that will motivate people to buy the new model. Like Siri.

So, why does everyone think they'll call it the iPhone 5, when in reality it's actually the 6th?

Apple has demonstrated with the naming of the 4S that they don't follow any rules about naming iPhones based on generations. Only the iPhone 4 has been named for its generation, which came as the next logical name after the 3GS. They seem to be doing two iPhone generations per model as in the 3G/3GS and 4/4S. I wouldn't be surprised to see that continue.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I will buy the iPad 3.

Well, if Steve really spent that much time designing it, can we all admit it won't look anything like these ugly mockups that MR keeps using?
