professional photographers and cinematographers don’t use cellular telephones to do their work
Sure they do. You just fail to realize it. Professional photography and cinematography is not all big budget Hollywood, and a constantly increasing portion of end usage is on smaller handheld or desktop displays rather than big screen and 4C glossy print.

Apple's ads prove what iPhone Pros are capable of, and plenty of professional photographers and cinematographers are using them that way. Few professionals are inclined to brag about it, because clients are more impressed by seeing the big expensive Nikon glass in hand. But the security/transportation/handling issues necessary when using all that bulky, heavy, valuable Nikon glass with its substantial tripods mean that a pocketable iPhone Pro with compact tripod may often become a very useable alternative.

Edit: Note that you reference "cellular telephones" whereas I reference "iPhone Pros," and there is a very big difference. An "iPhone Pro" is a very specific subset of "cellular telephones." Contrary to what many Internet wags posting here seem to think, the Pro version of the latest iPhones is indeed a different beast, significantly superior from a camera standpoint.

I've seen foldable phones and they just seemed like a gimmick. Last night I had dinner with a friend who had the new Galaxy Z Fold 7.

I own every product in the Apple store and this was the first thing I've seen that made me want to ditch my iPhone. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. Folded it was thinner than my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Videos on the open screen were breathtaking, and there was no hint of a seam down the middle. And this this is so thin when opened you just can't believe it.

I haven't been to MacRumors in awhile, so I went and looked and they peg an Apple foldable phone for fall of NEXT YEAR.

What in the world is going on at Apple? They have all the cash in the world, all the top people, and they just can't do this stuff?

Honestly, this phone made my iPhone look like a Gen 1 product. If you haven't held one, you will first be amazed at the phone itself, but as that wears off you will just get madder and madder thinking about how Apple missed this. It's like the company has been asleep for five plus years.

Apple has not been asleep and they know what they’re doing, and that’s coming from someone who would have been all over a foldable iPhone years ago. I am very glad they are close to having one. Day 1 purchase for me. But apple knows what they’re doing are doing. They know when the market for a that product will become viable enough to invest in it, and apparently that time is now.

fair

I could have been more clear and said

“MOST professional photographers and cinematographers don’t use cellular telephones to do their work”

Your examples are all fun edge cases of people using new technology to do things in different ways (though I would say using apple keynotes as an example is pretty silly)

More to the point though I guess, while foldable phones are not for me, they aren’t going to fail if they aren’t well suited to photography or cinematography

Most photographers and cinematographers don’t use cellular telephones to do their work AND most people don’t buy cellular telephones to do photography and cinematography
We could uselessly debate the semantics of your usage most but we will not. Also your intentionally usage of the term cellular telephones instead of iPhone Pros more specifically.

But the simple fact is that lots ;) of professionals use iPhone Pros in their workflows on a daily basis.

This Apple horizon is moving farther and farther. 8 years wait might represent a significan chunk of their life for some folks. And then Apple may decide not to release it at all turning them into suckers.
If that's the case the Apple customer will decide what to do. Right? Of course the flip side is Apple delivers and smashes it out of the ballpark.

Its a mass market failure. There is just no use case for it.
The AVP was never a mass market device. Only silly internet wags call it that when it isn't, so that they can then falsely claim "Its a mass market failure."

As a future tech demonstration the AVP hardware is superb. The fact that more than 100k early interest folks have been willing to spend $3,500 each to experiment with the new tech (despite its obviously nascent software) represents very substantial success.

Yeah, having to bring a backpack with you wherever you go sure sounds very convenient. The whole point is that if you are bringing a phone with you anyway it isn’t less convenient if that phone can fold out to be the size of an iPad Mini.
I tend to take my backpack with me for my meds so it’s usually there anyway.

You’re right, one device is easier, bit having used a Z fold and Z flip, I’m not convinced that the folded screen is durable enough for my lifestyle…that being said, if the cost and durability aren’t a concern then sure, go for it. I will check out the Apple foldable when it comes out but most likely I won’t be buying it.

People keep saying Apple doesnt release imperfect product yet forget about the 'You are holding it wrong' meme.
Yes and the hoopla was just that, simply a meme. Internet wags being internet wags, clickbaiting etc. The actual phone worked just fine for me. Same thing with bendgate.

The same internet wags will no doubt again be internet wags clickbaiting by bending iPhone Airs when they come out. <of course one can intentionally bend a cellular phone if one is dumb enough to want to>

why would Apple change their product strategy? They are releasing for years nearly the same device (iPhones) every year and make billions out of it.
Low efforts in real change and still making billions of dollars, many companies are jealous of Apple
Just because you are incapable of recognizing the real change, each year does not mean that real change did not exist. In fact, I would suggest that your statement regarding making billions of dollars suggests that the fact is that real change is more apparent to the rest of the real-world buyers than it is to you.

Is that even the case nowadays? The Vision Pro launched significantly longer after VR headsets were already out on the market and haven't set the market on fire.
The AVP is not simplistically just a VR headset. It is a complex demonstration of new technology that coincidentally includes VR as one of the capabilities. So no, the AVP should not be measured against how well it addresses the existing VR headset market space.

I am mad at Denny's because I ate at Subway and I loved their stuff, but I am going to continue to eat at Denny's and keep complaining about it guys.
Eating a meal at a restaurant is a one time, stand alone event and you could switch restaurants with no difficulty. Switching platforms is a whole different animal.

Got it. Sounds like you have more money than you know what to spend it on! Is that not enough to not be mad at anybody and be happy about it? You’re a rare breed :)

Foldables looks ”cool” but are more of a gimmick, so they are not usable for me (at least not yet).

Sure it’s nicer reading documents and books maybe, but it’s not good enough for actual multitasking and the screen is actually often smaller when viewing media/movies.

I think Dave2D shows the issues clearly in his review:
I think this video gets it right the other version he shows seems the better route to go. I just think it go the iPhone is rounded on all 4 sides and all the foldables need a flat side or all boxy design to make when it opens up work. A foldable iPhone mini woulda been cool in fold mode it’s the whole one handed thing and open it’s a nice e reader. Perhaps Samsung should try to make it shorter. The multi tasking ehhhh makes what your doing to small reminds me of using a 13 inch laptop and trying to have 2 excel files opened up on the same screen. A pain in the butt

And yet by commercial terms its a complete failure. As you said, Apple only enters a market when its "perfect" / "Ready" so by that logic the AVP should have been a smash hit.

I agree with you. The same applies to the Samsung memes as well though.

The crease and durability complaints are overblown. Sure, if I open up my 3 year old Fold 4, tilt it in the sunlight on a black screen so that the sun falls on the crease, I can see it. Is that a realistic scenario? Its not. Similarly, if I abuse my devices and keep dropping them or expose the hinge to sand, it will get damaged.

AVP was a smash hit, just not a huge seller relative to other electronic devices from Apple that don't cost north of $3k. Pet rock was a smash hit and yet...

There is nothing funny about that. It's a camera like how Qualcomm makes the chip inside the Samsung. It's a product which has been made for generations.

Samsung invented foldable displays. What's Apple invented recently?

About the search engine. What difference does it make?
"Remote Solutions created the MP3 player. What's Apple invented recently?"

"Palm had a smartphone before Apple. What's Apple invented recently?"

Bet he’s got a lovely creased screen in 12 months time…

The person that I was responding too made no mention of iPhone pros

Most professional photographers absolutely do not use telephones of any sort to shoot their photos

you can say “lots” I’m still going to say that it’s actually “few” and certainly not “most”

Id love to see some numbers but they likely wouldn’t be much more anecdotal than our claims

The fact that more than 100k early interest folks have been willing to spend $3,500 each to experiment with the new tech (despite its obviously nascent software) represents very substantial success.

100,000 seems like an incredibly small number of people to have purchased any particular manufactured good, mass market or otherwise

Apple was likely waiting for it to be scalable in a way that made sense to them. Samsung needs to worry less about these things. Apple's solution likely will be just as good if not better than this, however there are far to many caveats with this device. Make sure you cut your fingernails before use! Don't take it to the beach! Don't go outside your house! Despite advancements in durability, lots of the same stuff still applies. Will Apple introduce a screen that can’t be permanently dented with a fingernail? We will find out I guess but this just doesn’t appeal to me at all.
